Rights Respecting Schools Group (RRS) (17-18)

20/06/18

We have now been officially approved as a BIC Community Champion and will be a public drop-off location for the Writing Instruments Recycling Programme through TerraCycle.  Any brand of pen, felt pen, highlighter, marker, correction fluid pot, correction tape, mechanical pencil and eraser pen (caps included) can be handed into the school once they have run out as part of this process.

18/05/18

Along with our paper recycling, we are now recycling used pens once they have no ink left.  This will help to protect the environment as the pens will not be going with general rubbish and dumped on a landfill site.  These will be sent off periodically to a company who will recycle them and the school will earn money for it.

30/04/18

We came together as our new committee to discuss our right of the month for May.  To link with International Day of Families later in the month, the articles we have chosen to focus on are:

Article 5 – Your family has the responsibility to help you learn to exercise your rights, and to ensure your rights are protected.

Article 10 – If you live in a different country than your parents do, you have the right to be together in the same place.

Article 18 – You have the right to be raised by your parent(s) if possible.

27/04/18

Please meet our new Rights Respecting Schools Group:

The group is predominantly the same, however we have welcomed Mathew McLeish, Harris Kelly and Ceryn McAvoy to join us.  Sophie Glass and Alex Willis have also moved to another committee who will meet on a regular basis with Mrs O’Driscoll.

We had Ross along to speak to us today to get our planning for the UNICEF Soccer Aid Playground Challenge underway.  We will be hosting this on Friday 8th June when each class will be allocated a time to participate in football related activities to support this worthy cause.

16/04/18

Although we have already touched on this article, we have decided to focus on it again as World Earth Day will be celebrated on 22nd April:

Article 29 – Your education should help you use and develop your talents and abilities.  It should also help you learn to live peacefully, protect the environment and respect other people.

23/03/18

We supported Sports Relief today by wearing our sports clothes and the whole school taking part in the PE Suite choreographed routine of “This is Me”.  Ruth Mitchell also joined us as she had been learning the dance with the children that she looks after outwith school hours 🙂

21/03/18

Today was World Down Syndrome Day, and although we hadn’t decided to support this, Mollie came to school wearing her odd socks to support their #Lotsofsocks campaign.  Well done Mollie 🙂

26/02/18

To fit in with our fundraising for Sports Relief at the end of March, the RRS group have chosen article number 2 to be the focus for the month.

All children have these rights, no matter who they are, where they live, what their parents do, what language they speak, what their religion is, whether they are a boy or a girl, what their culture is, whether they have a disability, whether they are rich or poor.  No child should be treated unfairly on any basis.

Please look out for information from the RRS group with regards to what we plan to do for Sports Relief.

02/02/18

Two gentlemen were in at school today talking about the importance of the children staying out of the building site where the Community Centre once stood.  Therefore, the children have chosen article number 17 as a focus for the month of February.

You have the right to get information that is important for your well-being, from radio, newspaper, books, computers and other sources.  Adults should make sure that the information you are getting is not harmful, and help you find and understand the information you need.

17/01/18

We are proud to announce that we have got our Bronze Award for Rights Respecting Schools.  Look out for this logo around the school and on letters which are sent home.

12/01/18

The Rights Respecting Schools Steering Group met with Miss Hunter today to organise our right of the month for January.  As every class is busy learning a Scots’ poem for our Scottish Celebration, we have decided to choose article number 30, with the main focus being on the right to choose your own language.

You have the right to practice your own culture, language and religion – or any you choose.  Minority and indigenous groups need special protection of this right.

We did look at this same article earlier in the session, also with a focus on language, however that was to cover European Language Day.

08/12/17

The school supported Cash for Kids Christmas Jumper day today.  All the money we raised will go towards helping disadvantaged children over the festive period.

Very Christmassy!  Well done on raising a huge amount of money!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

08/12/17

Huge congratulations to the winners of the ‘Design your own Elf’ competition.  It was a very tough decision, but the lucky winners were:

ECC – Ariana Murphy

P1/2 – Skylah Phillips

P2/3 – Kelsie McCurdie

P3 – Kodie McMillan

P4 – Murron Pirie

P5 – Ellen MacWalters

P6 – Kasey Sharp

P7 – Iona McCord

Well done girls!  Unfortunately Kodie wasn’t here today to receive her prize, but she will get it when she returns.

Well done!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

28/11/17

Our charitable work continued this week with the P7s helping to categorise the food items that were handed in for the reverse advent calendar.  All the donations will be sent to the Ayrshire Food Bank to help those over the festive period who are not as fortunate as we are.

I am overwhelmed by the amount of food collected by parents and friends.  Well done and thank you.  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

27/11/17

The steering group met again today to decide on our monthly article for December.  We have decided on an article which relates to “World Soil Day” which Mrs Turnbull will be delivering an assembly on as part of the school’s ECO work.

Article 29 – Your education should help you use and develop your talents and abilities.  It should also help you learn to live peacefully, protect the environment and respect other people.

We also discussed having a competition towards our Christmas Jumper day for Cash for Kids.  Olivia’s idea of designing your own elf was voted for by the group.  Look out for photographs of the winning entries.

06/11/17

The Rights Respecting Schools Steering Group met with Miss Hunter today to decide on our monthly article for November.  The meeting was a little bit quieter with the P7s away at Lockerbie, however we coped without them.  We have decided on 2 articles this month as they fit in with assemblies that are planned:

Article 19 – You have the right to be protected from being hurt and mistreated, in body or mind.

Article 39 – You have the right to help if you’ve been hurt, neglected or badly treated.

02/11/17

We received a certificate of thanks today from the Ayrshire Hospice for our fundraising efforts for their ‘Go Purple’ day.  A huge thanks to everyone who contributed to this worthwhile cause…we managed to raise a fantastic £277.44.  Well done everyone 🙂  🙂

What a lot of money!  Well done.  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

13/10/17

It may be unlucky for some, but Friday 13th October saw us supporting the Ayrshire Hospice ‘Go Purple’ Day to raise funds for the work that the Hospice do to help those in need.  Thank you very much to everyone who contributed to this worthy cause!

05/10/2017

The steering group met again today to decide on our monthly article for October.  This month we have decided on 2 articles which relate to “World Food Day” which Miss Hunter will be delivering an assembly on later in the month.

Article 24 – You have the right to the best health care possible, safe water to drink, nutritious food, a clean and safe environment, and information to help you stay well.

Article 27 – You have the right to food, clothing, a safe place to live and to have your basic needs met.  You should not be disadvantaged so that you can’t do many oh the things other kids can do.

01/09/17

The new RRS Steering Group met with Miss Hunter today for their first meeting of the session.

First on the agenda was to decide on which article we would focus on for the month of September, and this was decided as article number 30:

You have the right to practice your own culture, language and religion – or any you choose.  Minority and indigenous groups need special protection of this right.

There is a particular focus on the language aspect of this article as we will be learning about European Day of Languages nearer the end of the month.

Secondly we discussed the articles which were important for our whole school charter, and every child in the school will play a part in building the display for this in the hall.  Look out for photos to follow!

24/08/2017

Mrs Wilson and Miss Hunter caught a glimpse of some of the children from P1/2 and P2/3 joining together to play a game at lunchtime.  The RRS Steering Group from last session created our ‘Playground Charter’ using suggestions from each class, which links with Article number 15 and talks about how children have the right to choose their own friends.

That’s wonderful to see!  It doesn’t matter which class you are in, you can play with whomever you choose!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

18/08/2017

As we have just returned for the start of the new session, Miss Hunter has chosen the monthly article for August which is article number 42:

You have the right to know your rights!  Adults should know about these rights and help you learn about them.

Miss Hunter has asked each class to create a ‘Quilt of Rights’ which will illustrate some of the articles from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

‘Dressed By The Kids’ Day

The children had a great day on Friday dressing the staff in the school for OXFAM’s ‘Dressed By The Kids’ Day.  As you can see from the photos, some of the children have been kinder than others 🙂

Thank you for all the donations – £160 has been sent to OXFAM 🙂

Well done to everyone, especially Miss Hunter and the RRS Group.  Some staff members loved it a bit too much!!! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)
