A Week in P5

paired reading
paired reading Charlotte’s Web

P5 have been reading to each other and doing peer and self assessment based on the chapter we read.

We have also been busy practising for our Easter Service. It is going to be brilliant.

World Book Day

Yesterday for world book day we enjoyed reading to the P1s.  Mr Miller also read from a newspaper and an autobiography.  I found it really interesting when he told use about the rugby player Dodie Weir’s autobiography. – Robbie

Author Visit from Keith Brumpton

Keith Brumpton, an author and illustrator visited P4 and P5 today. It was really interesting to hear how he came up with his ideas and told us all about what it is like to be a writer. He travels all over the world and has written for the Dumping Ground, MI High, Waterloo Road and River City. Some of us received the Dino FC books we had ordered with an autograph and personal illustration. It was really interesting.

Chicks – We are eggstatic!

1/3/19 Last Ever Chick Blog – We are so sad that the chicks are leaving today. We are going to miss them, but we can keep up with the girl chicks who are going to Kate and Robbie. We wish the wee boys a safe trip back.

Girls huddled together to keep warm before leaving

28/2/19 We have noticed the tail feathers have started to form in some of the chicks, but not all of them.  We fed them with our hands yesterday and it was tickly. I am very lucky because I am taking 2 girls home tomorrow. – Kate

28/2/19 Today we made information booklets about the chicks. I put information about how they grow and how to look after them – Molly.

25/2/19 This morning the chicks feathers are starting to come through. They are starting to stretch out their wings. I have noticed that they have grown a lot since Friday. – Lucy

24/2/19 Chicks continue to enjoy their stay. Next door’s cat is frightened of them !!! Last night we had a wee game of scrabble.

23/2/19  Chicks are getting much bigger. They are preening themselves and flapping their wings and stretching their legs. You will not believe how lively they are! They are also enjoying perching on my thumb! Quite a few visitors today to keep them busy.

23/2/19 Chicks have settled in well to their holiday home with Mrs McCrone. Fresh bedding, food and water this morning and have just settled down for a wee nap.

22/2/19 Today we had to clean out the brooder box. We also gave the chicks names today. There are 4 girls called Popcorn, Star, Nutmeg and Nugget – Aimee

22/2/19 The Kilmarnock Standard came yesterday to take photos of our chicks. Now all the chicks are in the Brooder Box. We wrote letters to the Parent Council to thank them for the chicks. There are 6 boys called Jeff, Punk Rocker, Chickster, Chip, Fluff Ball and Gary! – Lewis

21/2/19 5 more chicks hatched over night so now all 10 have hatched. Now their dander is up, 5 have moved to the brooder box. Meanwhile the other 5 are drying out in the incubator. – David

21/2/19 Today we got to hold some of the chicks. They feel ticklish and really fluffy and soft. We have to be really careful how we hold them to make them feel safe so they don’t get distressed. – Lucy

20/2/19 so far 5 chicks – looks like 3 girls and 2 boys. Next update tomorrow morning!

Two girls so far this morning!

20/2/19  Sophie – Today some of the chicks have hatched. They make very loud chirping noises! I feel relieved that they have hatched.

20/2/19 Thomas – We can’t move them to the Brooder Box until their dander is up. This means that we wait until they are all fluffed up. At the moment they are a bit wet and exhausted.

Putting water in the incubator

Adding water to the incubator

19/2/19 While the eggs are in the incubator we have to add water to keep air moist. This is called humidity and helps the chicks to hatch – Katie

19/2/19 Everyday we will have different jobs to do when looking after the chicks. I am looking forward to my turn to clean them out. I wish they would hatch soon – Jack

The eggs have arrived in the incubator. I learned how the chicks grow. I am excited for them to hatch – Rachel

Today we got the chick eggs and put them in the incubator. We also made mind maps about the 21 days inside the egg. I am feeling excited too. – Duncan
