Can all P6 pupils please bring a teddy bear/soft toy to school tomorrow (Wednesday 22nd June). They will be buddying up with the nursery for a Teddy Bear’s Picnic. It’s sure to be a great afternoon filled with fun and games.
P5/6 have had a fantastic time celebrating Health Week! The pupils have enjoyed learning to box with Miss Brown, participating in the Sports Championship, going on their school trip as well as making some amazing fruit kebabs in class.

The pupils began reading a new short story in literacy this week named ‘The Tunnel’. The pupils firstly read the blurb on the back of the book and used their prior knowledge to design a front cover. Additionally, throughout this story the pupils have used their knowledge of comprehension strategies to explore inference, character profiles, as well as learning to use a thesaurus to improve their vocabulary. The pupils have continued to explore persuasive writing this week as they learned to create a leaflet to persuade people to think about their fashion choices.
Maths
The pupils have continued to develop their knowledge of fractions in maths this week as they begin to identify equivalent fractions using bar models and their knowledge of multiples. The pupils have also focused on ordering unit fractions by comparing denominators.
Other Curricular Areas
As part of ‘World of Work Day’ the pupils researched and created a poster to show the skills and qualities needed for their chosen career. This poster can be used to support their ‘Big Talk’.
Additionally, P5/6 have now completed their badminton sessions for this term. The pupils were able to demonstrate the many skills they have learnt during some competitive games.
As part of our ‘fast fashion’ topic, the pupils in P5/6 explored the effectiveness of adverts within the fashion industry. The pupils could explain that clothing adverts are designed to influence people on what they wear and to persuade them to buy their products. Following this, the pupils then highlighted features of adverts and used this knowledge to create an advert for a clothing brand they had created. You can see some of their fabulous designs on our ‘fast fashion’ display.
Maths
Throughout this week, the pupils have been learning to identify equivalent fractions in pictures and have been using this knowledge to create their own set of equal fractions. The pupils also used their ICT skills to create frequency tables to present data collected from their clothing habits school survey.
Other Curricular Areas
Our pupils have enjoyed learning about natural and synthetic fabrics and can now discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using both types of fabrics.

Twice a year, the children take part in our whole school ‘Big Talk Homework Challenge’. This is where your child gets the opportunity to prepare and present a talk to the class.
This term we will be having a World of Work day so the title of the talk will be ‘When I am older, I would like to be…’.
At home, your child should prepare and practise their talk.
Some ideas to include in their talk might be:
What job would you like to do when they are older and why?
What skills or equipment might you need for the job/ what skills would this job help to develop?
What skills do you have that would make you a good fit for this career?
More information about your chosen job & the role you would like to take on.
You could also use other ideas to enhance your talk e.g. PowerPoint (saved on GLOW or pen-drive), drawings, diagrams or items from home.
The talk should be ready to be presented the week bg Monday 6th June.

The pupils in P5/6 have been learning to identify features of a balanced argument in literacy this week. Following this, the pupils were able to explain that a balanced argument must have: an opening paragraph to explain what the argument will be about; 2 paragraphs which discuss the views for and against the argument and a concluding paragraph which includes the writer’s own opinion. The pupils then used this knowledge to write their own balanced argument.
Maths
P5/6 are continuing to learn about fractions. Throughout the week, the pupils have been learning to make 1 whole using part of a fraction. The pupils were also looking at equivalent fractions using fraction walls and number lines. As well as this, the pupils used their knowledge of data handling to investigate pupils’ clothing habits in the school. They collected the data and presented it using a frequency table.
Other Curricular Areas
As part of our ‘fast fashion’ topic, the pupils used science to investigate the functions and properties of different materials used in the fashion industry. They researched fabrics such as wool, linen and elastane and then created an information poster to present their findings.
The pupils were also learning about a new painting style called pointillism. This week, we examined Seurats’ famous painting ‘Sunday on la Grande Jatte’.
Cycle Station will be visiting our school on Thursday 12th May. This will be to carryout bike checks and any minor adjustments and/or repairs on bikes for all pupils wishing to take part in Bikeability this term.
Anyone who is interested should make sure that they bring their bike to school with them on Thursday morning.
