Forget Picasso! 🎨

P4 continued celebrating ‘Maths Week’ this afternoon as we created our very own ‘Mathsasso’ Picasso inspired masterpieces.

We used the digits 0-9  to create these funky looking portraits and added a pop of colour to really make them shine!

What do you think?

Maths Week with Miss Murdoch

P4 have kicked off Maths Week with Miss Murdoch by learning to measure the length of different objects.

In class the pupils were able to identify the different metric units of measure in length such as millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres. Following this, the pupils were then able to tell Miss Murdoch that a skyscraper is measured in kilometres during their measure quiz!

The pupils then took part in solving practical measuring problems. This required the pupils to estimate the length of objects inside the classroom and then accurately measure them using the correct measuring device.

Super work, P4!

Check our some of the pictures taken at numeracy time this week!  📷 😎

We have been working on place value – recognising, ordering, writing and partitioning 3 and 4 digit numbers.

We have also been working on learning our doubles as we know this will help us speed up calculations.

Have a look (& happy weekend!)

Miss McLean 😊

Number Talks – Adding Up In Chunks

Here we are with our second NumberTalks strategy video, this time demonstrated by our fabulous Eilidh.

Go to this Sway

NumberTalks is all about finding a strategy that works for you. We know in Primary 4 that not everyone will prefer to use the same strategy and that’s why trying out lots of different methods is so important!

Here are some addition calculations for you to try at home. You can try out the ‘Adding Up In Chunks’ strategy to complete the calculation. Some of the children might prefer double check their answers using the partitioning strategy  shown last week (it is proving to be a preferred strategy with lots of primary 4) & that is ok!

Have fun!

Say cheese! 📷

It has been yet another busy week in Primary 4 learning new tennis skills, creating line drawings, researching for our fact files, learning new Number Talks strategies and taking part in team building challenges to name a few things!

This week we will let our smiling faces do the talking. 😁

Have a look at just some of the snaps taken this week!

Homework ✏️📕

Your P4 has been sent home with their own ‘Spelling Grid’ today.

The grid contains 12 words that they have found tricky to spell since returning to school. Your Primary 4 has also been given a lined jotter that they may use to practise these words.

There is no expectation that your child learns all 12 words this week, we will also be working on spelling the words in class and they will be updated when your child is confident spelling them. However, encouragement and help to learn them at home would be much appreciated! ☺️

This week we have been using the  ‘word shape’ to practise our words. Ask your P4 to show you how this is done.

I have added a picture of our spelling strategies below so you can try some at home.

Number Talks

P4 have been making excellent progress with our number talks. Ask your child to complete the following calculations using one of our strategies. (Partitioning, compensation, adding up in chunks)

Check out the video of Hannah demonstrating the partitioning strategy.

Visualisation

P4 have been using our visualisation skills to create models of the setting in our book study ‘This Morning I Met a Whale’.

We looked for key details in the text to visualise and produce our ‘sets’.

Can you spot any  London landmarks in our work?

Number Talks

It has been another brilliant week in Primary 4. We are all off to a flying start as we get stuck into our new learning.

One of the things we have been working on in class is our ‘Number Talks’. This week we have been looking at strategies that can make our addition calculations quicker & easier.

One of the strategies we have been focusing on this week is ‘Partitioning’.

Here is the brilliant Hannah, showing us how she used partitioning to make her calculation easier.

Ask your Primary 4 to show you how it is done!
