Rights Respecting Schools Award

This week we are looking at Article 17 – access to information from the media.

Every child has the right to reliable information from a variety of sources, and governments should encourage the media to provide information that children can understand. Governments must help protect children from materials that could harm them.

Watch the video below to hear some of our P7s talk you through this right.

This week we are looking at Article 12 – respecting the views of the child.

Watch the video below to hear some of our P7 committee members talking about this right.

Can you think of how we show respect for this right at Annanhill?

Our right of the Month for March is….

Article 15

You have the right to choose your own friends and join or set up groups as long as it isn’t harmful to others.

We thought about what it takes to be a good friend.  We also thought about what we want in a friend.

We want our friends to be honest, trustworthy and kind.

“The only way to have a friend is to be one.’

Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Friends are the cherries in the Tangfastics of life”

Our right of the Month for February is….

Article 32

You have the right to protection from work that harms you, is bad for your health and education.

We learned about children around the world who have to leave school early and get a job that could be dangerous, like working in a landfill to sort rubbish.

Our right of the Month for December and January is….

Article 26

You have the right to help from the government if you are poor or in need.

We thought about why some people might need help from the government, they might be old or ill.

We also thought of ways we could support them, with Christmas coming up we thought about charities that we could support.  Primary 3 told us about their amazing project they did learning about and collecting for the food bank.  These are small, simple ways we can help others.  ‘Tis the season for giving after all!

Our Right of the month for November is….

Article 24

You have the right to the best health care possible, safe water to drink, nutritious food, a clean and safe environment, and information to help you stay well.

In assembly this month we learned about the NHS and how we, in Scotland, have access to free healthcare 24/7.  We also learned about how some children in other parts of the world have to walk for miles and miles to see a doctor.  They might be sick because of the lack of clean drinking water.

Our Right of the Month for October is…

Article 7

I have the right to a name.

At assembly this month we learned about the right to have a name.  That is something we all take for granted but we were shocked when we learned that millions of children around the world don’t have a legal name, they weren’t registered at birth and that means that they don’t exist in the eyes of some governments.

In class some of us have been learning about what our name means.  Our names are special to us and we are very glad that we have them!

Our Right of the Month for September is…

Article 42

I have the right to know my rights.

Adults should know my rights and help me learn about them.

At Annanhill we celebrate the UN CRC at special assemblies every month where the children get to explore a different right each month.  The teachers all talk about that right in class during the month and some classes do special lessons to explore the right as part of our health and wellbeing work.

When asked at the assembly what rights the children knew they were able to tell us lots of different ones.  The RRS Committee were very impressed!

The pupil group met yesterday and have come up with some fun ways to explore the right to play and relax in the classes.  We have given this out to teachers and are looking forward to seeing how the classes get on with the activities!  We will update you here!!

Our Right of the Month for June is…

Article 31

Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities.

We learned about this right in assembly this week and we all agree that with the right to play all of us have a responsibility to play fairly and respectfully.

At Annanhill we have lots of exciting opportunities to take part in play activities and especially to take part in cultural and artistic activities.  This has really made our curriculum more exciting and we love the different activities we get to do that we might not normally!

Don’t forget to check this month’s display in the corridor!!

Our Right of the Month for May is…

Article 30

You have the right to practice your own culture, language and religion – or any you choose.  Minority and indigenous groups need special protection of this right.

We learned about this right in assembly at the start of the month.  We learned how to say hello in lots of different languages and we found out that there are many different languages spoken here in Annanhill!

We also learned that as well as having the right to practice our own language, culture and religion we have a responsibility to respect the language culture and religion of others.

Don’t forget to check out our Rights Respecting Schools display when you come in for the Right of The Month!!

“We’ve all got rights”

We are learning the UNICEF song about having rights at the assemblies.  Some of us like it more than others!
