English S3

Course Outline

There are three main elements in this course –

  • Reading: studying poetry, drama, novels and short stories in detail and writing about them critically
  • Writing: completing a variety of writing tasks ranging from pieces which give information, to creative work in which the imagination is used and ideas developed
  • Talking: learning to play a useful part in discussion as well as giving an individual talk

 

Additional skills which are developed in this course include –

  • working with others in groups
  • learning to improve and redraft your own work

 

Core Skills

Literacy is the Core Skill underpinning the English course. This skill will help you to communicate effectively both orally and written.

Assessment

Continuous assessment is a prominent feature of the course.   It enables teachers to judge how their pupils are progressing at any stage during the session.

There is no final exam in English at the end of S3 but as in S1 and S2 you will sit a number of summative assessments which allow us to monitor your progress.

Independent reading will be positively encouraged with all students developing responses through talk and critical evaluations.

Progression

Successful completion of this course will normally lead to study at the following levels:

  • Working within CfE Level 3 – 4 à       National 5
  • Working within CfE Level 2 – 4 à       National 4
  • Working within CfE Level 2           à   Access 3
