Ice Investigators

The cold weather has given us lots of opportunities for learning outside.  The children were very excited to find ice all over the Nursery garden on Friday morning.

It was great fun finding ice all over the garden.

It was great fun finding ice all over the garden.

The boys wanted to have a close look at the ice crystals.

They used magnifying glasses to examine the ice and found some strange things.

PTDC1815

The boys found numbers hidden in the ice.

PTDC1821

What do you think this looks like?  The children thought it was a spider.

One block of ice looked like it had a spider inside and the children wanted to get it out to see what it was.  Lots of suggestions were made for how to get inside the ice. “We can smash it.” “We can drop it.” “We can hold it in our hand.”  All of these suggestions were tried but they found the ice wasn’t disappearing quick enough.

PTDC1822

It takes great team work to solve a problem.

One of our children then suggested that we should get some hot water.  The water melted the ice and the children discovered that it was a tiny stone inside the ice – not a spider, we were all very surprised!

PTDC1823

It’s not a spider – just a stone!

This prompted the children to make their own ice blocks and freeze objects inside to see how they change.  Watch out for the next post to see what happened to them.

Winter Weather Arrangements

In order to help parents/carers and schools plan for winter weather conditions, we are introducing a new arrangement. On days when there is an amber weather alert for snow for the Dumfries area, we will text parents in the afternoon to make them aware that school will start later, at 10:00 a.m., the following day.  This is to ensure that the school has the best possible chance of opening that day as it will allow more time for staff to travel to school in poor conditions. The main problem when schools close is the reduced number of teachers who have managed to get into work and this late start should help with this by allowing more time for difficult journeys and, hopefully, allowing roads to be cleared more effectively. The aim is to open the school even in snowy weather so that working parents can inform their employers that they will be in work, starting at a later time.

The 10:00 a.m. start will only operate where an AMBER alert has been issued for this area. Yellow alerts will not trigger this. School will still close as normal at 3:00 p.m.

It may still be necessary to close the school if the snow is too severe to allow travel even for 10:00 a.m. but you would be informed of this in the usual way. If this is necessary the Dumfries and Galloway website will display the school closure message and Westsound will broadcast details of school closures. We would also aim to send parents/carers a text to inform them as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Mrs Fisher

Living Advent Performance

As you may know, our singing club took part in the Dumfries Living Advent Festival. The group sang beautifully,  entertaining shoppers on Thursday 17th December at The Plainstanes.

The organisers have complied a programme of the events that have happened throughout the Advent Festival and this was what they had to say about us:

“Day 17 – a real hit with the Living Advent Team and every single person on the High Street, today saw St Ninians School Choir take centre stage and charm and delight us all with their singing.  Although only young this choir filled the entire town centre with the Spirit of Christmas.  Their singing was just incredible and brought a tear to many an eye.”

For the full programme please see the attached copy or it can be viewed on Dumfries and Galloway What Is Going On website page.

Well done to everyone involved!

Primary Five – Christmas around the World

PTDC0891 Some of the countries we have learned about with our World Advent Calendar in the background.

PTDC0889We enjoyed some festive Swedish treats!

PTDC0890

In Primary 5 we have been learning all about Christmas traditions from around the world. We have had a world Advent Calendar and we have learned new facts everyday.

Here are some of our favourites:

“In New Zealand they call their Christmas tree a ‘pohutukawa’.” Dylan R

“In India they decorate banana and mango trees at Christmas.” Finnlay

“In Venezuela, people go to church on Christmas Morning on roller skates.” Amy

“In Japan, the traditional Christmas Dinner is fried chicken and many people order a KFC weeks in advance!” Keira

We also found out that:

The Christmas Carol ‘Silent Night’ originates from Austria.

In Poland, people place hay under the table cloth for Christmas dinner and an extra place setting is always created for unexpected visitors.

In Holland, children fill their shoes with carrots on Christmas Eve so that Santa will fill them with small presents and sweets.

We were also able to sample some festive treats from Sweden. Most of the class enjoyed the ‘Aromatic Festive Soft Drink’ and we all enjoyed the Christmas biscuits!

Living Advent

The choir recently took part in The Living Advent,  in Dumfries town centre. The group sang beautifully,  entertaining shoppers on Thursday 17th December at The Plainstanes.

The choir had a great time, as did their audience. £125 was collected by three willing helpers,  this money will help pay for future choir performances.

A super email was sent by the organisers of The Living Advent,  please see below.

Well done Choir!!

My Nativity – A Christmas Story by the Donkey

My Nativity – Donkey

I would like to tell you about something special that has happened recently to me, the grey donkey. It all started when I was asleep outside on hay in the back door of Mary’s home building. Mary was sitting on the roof of her home just above me. Then suddenly Joseph, Mary’s husband, fell asleep in his bed and about half an hour later he woke up shouting for Mary. “Mary! Mary! Where are you?”

“I’m up here Joseph”.

“Oh Mary I had a dream when a star transformed into an angel”.

“The angel told me that a baby is going to be born and God sent the angel to tell me that we have to name the baby Jesus, so we need to go all the way to Bethlehem and you need to ride, the donkey”.

I woke up hearing this and thinking whaaat?

We travelled eeh-awh days to Bethlehem, and when we reached the top of a hill we saw the Bethlehem. We only had 2 more donkey steps and I said, ” I CAN’T TAKE THIS ANYMORE!” But of course Mary and Joseph couldn’t understand me, so I got a smack on the bum. “Ouch!!” I shouted. We went through the gates and we asked an old farmer if we could stay in his barn. He said,” no sorry, got no room left”. We tried several other places but they all said no, but there was one house to ask. Knock, knock, knock. A kind innkeeper opened the door. “Hello there “, greeted Mary.

“We were wondering if we could stay in your stable?” asked Joseph.

“Yes of course, but I do have a lot of animals in there though.”

“That will be absolutely fine,” said Mary.

When we got into the stable I saw a pile of hay waiting for me to sleep on it. I raced for it but a chicken bet me to it, and I was furious. I had to sleep on the cold concrete floor.

Then I saw 3 lights heading towards the stable. 3 Shepherds entered and had presents.

“Oh finally, presents for me, oh wait for the baby and nothing for me.”

“Why thank you so ever much, but why have you brought Jesus presents?”

“To congratulate him of course!”

”Wow, thank you,“ thanked Mary.

The three Shepherds left and Mary said ”Wow, that was weird”.

The next day three wise men which were kings came in and gave Jesus Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. The fat king gave the gold the skinny one gave the frankincense and the bony one gave the myrrh. I only cared about the gold. King bony got down on one knee and held Mary’s hand.

“Don’t you dare propose”, said Joseph in anger. ”I’m not going to propose “, answered king bony with a face. “Mary you must leave Bethlehem and go back to Nazareth, it isn’t safe for Jesus”.

“Why not?” asked Mary.

“Because if King Herod finds you he will kill Jesus!”

Mary and Joseph set off back to Nazareth when I got home, I looked at Jesus and he smiled at me and I smiled back. Then I realized that he wasn’t a bad kid.  I also was their pet and was grateful.

That’s the end of the story folks.
