Free training course: Bicycle Maintenance

An opportunity has come up for us to offer a bike maintenance training course in Kirkconnel.
The course is a 2-day Bronze Velotech bike maintenance course which is an industry standard first level course. An outline of what would be covered is at the bottom of the email along with some more details. Participants can be aged 14 upwards but wouldn’t receive a Velotech certificate until they turn 16 (14 and 15 year olds get an attendance certificate for the interim).
The course is free to attend and participants will receive their own set of bike tools to keep.
We haven’t yet set dates for the course but it would be in November, January or February. Depending on who is interested we’ll see what days of the week or weekend work best.
Course information
Velotech courses are nationally recognised awards. They are a great way to enhance your knowledge and skills in cycle maintenance for personal use and they qualify you to work in the cycle industry.
During the course the candidates are shown how to perform each task, then led through the procedure, and finally have to carry out the task unaided to demonstrate that they understand the procedure and can carry it out in a safe and competent manner.
The Bronze course is for individuals aiming to develop their knowledge and skills in bike maintenance. It is suitable for those who wish to enhance their skills for personal use, or for those who work in the bike industry, or as outdoor instructors, teachers, project workers, etc. We teach you how to inspect and sign off any bike as being up to British Standard.
Course includes
  • Workshop health and safety, principles and practices
  • Bicycle safety checks
  • Inspect and adjust most common parts (brakes, saddles, handlebars, gears…)
  • Wheel removal
  • Puncture repair (incl. tubeless tyres)
  • Use of Torque wrenches
  • Detailed lubricant briefing and application.
  • British Standards requirements and Pre-delivery Inspection process
