Grant Hardie Came to School

On Monday, Grant Hardie came in to school. He used to come here, so we asked him about school, as well as curling. Some questions we asked him were:

Q: How did you feel about winning the silver medal?

A: Proud, but a little bit disappointed that we didn’t win gold.

Q: What does your training schedule consist of?

A: Two sessions on the ice, and one in the gym. (The sessions are all one hour long). We train every day.

Q: How did it feel to make it into the Olympics.

A: It felt very good.

Q: What’s the most embarrassing thing that happened while you were curling?

A: Falling over.

Q: What age did you start curling?

A: About 6 or 7.

Q: What was the worst thing about the Olympics?

A: That my friends and family couldn’t be there.

Q: How many medals have you won altogether?

A: 5.

What was your proudest moment?

A: Getting the silver Olympic medal.

Q: Is it easier to curl on ice or to do the floor curling?

A: Ice.

Q: What was your favourite subject at school?

A: Maths

Q: What favourite memories do you have from being at our school?

A: When we used to play football against other schools we were able to avoid the ‘tree’ in the middle of the pitch because we were used to it being there but the other teams would often run into it!

Everyone in the school got an autograph.

Rugby Week 3 ~ 8.3.22

For a warm up we all put on Velcro belts and tags apart from 2 catchers. They had to try and steal as many tags as possible.

We were focussing on team games where we had to work together to pass the ball backwards yet still trying to the other side.

The defenders at first were John and Mrs Miller, they were trying to stop us by getting our tags. It was challenging as we had to remember to stay ‘on side’ by keeping behind the ball.

Eventually Mrs Miller and John got a rest and each of the teams had to take turns being defenders and attackers. We are going to practise this on Friday with Mrs Miller and Mrs Magee.

Tulip Art

We made tulip art out of paper on Tuesday 1st April with Mrs Harris. You can see from the pictures that we had to concentrate and listen to the instructions. Lots of skills were involved ~ cutting, folding, measuring, using a ruler to draw straight lines, drawing, and putting it all together to make a beautiful picture.

We think you’ll agree the finished product is beautiful and bright.

Feis Rois 9.3.22

Feis Rois

At Feis Rois we created a jingle for our radio show. Then we brainstormed our ideas of things to include in the broadcast. We had a vote and decided to include a weather report and some local news. Next we made them up and we will choose 8 people to present them. We are going to rehearse the reports and the songs next week.

World Book Day

On the 3rd of March it was world book day! We came to school in our pyjamas!

In the morning we did reading buddy’s for 25 minutes . After that we were split into groups of 4 or 5 and  we did some book related activities. Nika showed us how to make book marks, with  Ania we made books  and Maisy did a treasure hunt.  Anna’s activity was to  create a character  and with Isla and Harry we made an I movie.

In the afternoon we did a house challenge which was to design and make a board game with a book theme.  Criffel made a board game linked to Three Little Pigs. Screel constructed a  life size monopoly type game and Lotus did Jack and the Beanstalk snakes and ladders game.

The next day we finished them and enjoyed playing them. We gave each house feedback then a had a vote on our favourite. Lotus won and got 30 house points each.

Big Room Science Experiment

On Tuesday afternoon, we did two very fun and interesting science experiments. They were to do with density. We had to do it outside, because the experiments were very messy!

For the first experiment, we filled a test tube three quarters full of olive oil, the last quarter was filled with water. Immediately the oil and water separated. The oil all went to the top of the tube, and the water all went to the bottom of the tube. This was because the oil was denser than the water.

Next, we broke up a vitamin c tablet into eight pieces and put the pieces one by one into the tube. The first piece of tablet caused the oil and water to bubble and froth. The oil kept its original colour, but the  water turned dark yellow.

When we added another piece of tablet, the water turned very pale orange. We took off the lid of the test tube and saw little orange bubbles appearing at the surface. They looked like algae. Then the mixture bubbled over the top of the tube, so we put the lid back on.

Then we left it for a while, and then we shook it. We opened the lid, but it exploded everywhere, so we shut it again.

After that, we added the rest of the vitamin c tablet, and the water turned neon orange. Then we opened it again, and white foam exploded out, in little yellow bubbles.

Eventually, we poured out the mixture, and the oil separated from the water and the dissolved tablets.

For the second experiment we filled a tray with water, and added some drops of oil with a pipette. We had a selection of materials to try to take the oil out. The materials were straw, cotton wool, sawdust, shredded paper, blue roll and a newspaper. We discovered to our surprise that the straw was most efficient, getting rid of almost all of the oil in a very short space of time. The next best was cotton wool, which was very efficient, but took quite long.

We enjoyed these experiments, and they were very informative and made us think.

Feis Rois Week 4

This week we had our fourth Feis Rois session. First, Paul taught us a song called Bananas are the Best. There were some words in Scots, and even “mañana,” which is a Spanish word, and means tomorrow. Next, we practised our Gaelic song, with Caitlin. Then, Caitlin taught us about jigs and reels. if a song is a jig, you can say “carrots and cabbages.” That is six beats. if it is a reel, you can say “watermelon,” which is four beats. Caitlin played us some songs and we had to guess if they were jigs or reels. here are two videos of pieces of music that Caitlin played. Can you guess if they are  jigs or reels?

Rugby ~Week 2 with John Muir

This is our 2nd week of rugby. This week in rugby we played some games and learned how to pass backwards and how to stay on side.   He told us we that have moved on 2 levels. We have done level 3 and are half way through level 4!

John is our rugby coach and he makes the lessons so much fun. We do rugby every Tuesday at 10:30am.

CURLING

On Friday  Primary 5 to 7 went to meet the ladies Olympic Curling Champions at Dumfries Ice Bowl.  We had prepared some questions to ask them. They brought their gold medals to show us.

Hammy was there from the men’s curling team and he brought his silver medal to show us. We were lucky enough to have a  go at curling and  we enjoyed this so much. They told us that  they had to train  very hard to  every day to get into the Olympics.

We all had a great time and  found the Olympian’s  inspiring . Some of us even got an autograph and some of us were shaking with excitement . Overall we were all so lucky to get the chance to meet members of the Olympics Curling Team.

Teddy In The Park

In the Purple Room as part of our science topic we were testing which fabric was the best insulator. We investigated which fabric kept the most heat in and which let the heat out.

We then  had to find out  who had the warmest jacket. It turned out that Leigh’s jacket was the warmest.
