Trio Partnership day

All the pupils from Portpatrick, Leswalt and Kirckolm came together to get to know one another better today.  A beach clean and a sports day was planned, but due to the weather, we quickly improvised.  The children performed a range of songs to entertain their audience and then played outside together.

The boys and girls were happy to be split into primary groups and mix with their peers from the other two schools.  Each class arranged purposeful activities.  The lower school played true or false ‘get to know you’ questioning, learned and performed an action song and participated in a social P.E game. The upper school engaged in STEM engineering challenges.  They had to work collaboratively to design and build a helicopter using basic materials.  The teams were then tasked with constructing a structure from paper straws that was capable of supporting weight.  The children had many creative ideas to meet the brief.

After lunch, we all walked down to the beach where we created beach art using natural materials.

Throughout the day, the children had the opportunity to mix and form friendships between schools.

Sports day

Everyone had a great afternoon competing in a range of events on our sports day. The rain stayed away and the sun  came out.

The winning houses and sports champions will be announced at the end of term closing ceremony, next week.

STEM problem solving

Primary 6 and 7 undertook a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) challenge in class last week.  Provided only with marshmallows and spaghetti the children had to plan, design and later construct the tallest tower they could in 30 minutes.  This challenge involved collaboration and teamwork.  Have a  look at how they got on!

Enterprising individuals

Harriet and Ellie were very enterprising and set up their own stall at the Gala day to help raise fund for the school.  They sold a variety of home made goodies and helped raise over £100 for school funds.  Well done girls!

P7 leavers lunch

Primary 7 enjoyed a special last lunch – one which they had picked as their favourite school dinner.  They then go to be the centre of attention and sat in the middle to enjoy it with all the rest of the school around them.

A successful weekend of football

Kirkcolm Primary school football team had a fabulous weekend of football.  Yesterday, they played at Kirkcolm Gala day and made it through to the final.  Sadly, they were beaten by Belmont Primary in the final to finish runners up at the tournament.

Today, Kirkcolm Primary  football team finished off the Summer season of fun days on winning form.  They won every game to get through to the final at the Sandhead tournament – against their new trio partnership schools of Leswalt /Portpatrick .

It was a very tense final, with Mrs Baillie being very diplomatic on the sidelines and avoiding showing allegiance to any one of her schools.  At full time the score was 0:0.  The tension was further heightened as it went to a penalty shoot off to decide the winners.  Kirkcolm Primary went on to  win on penalties.   Well done to all involved!  Many thanks must go to Mr Agnew for coaching the boys all season.

Science fun outdoors

Over the course of the term Primary 1 and 2  have been learning about Earth Science and chemical reactions. Our young learners decided we should trial our experiment before we conduct the BIG EXPLOSION of our own paper mache volcanos later this term. We listed the equipment needed, wrote up our methods, and predicted what would happen when bicarbonate soda is mixed with vinegar and detergent. Our predictions were CORRECT! Albeit less of an EXPLOSION and more like a slow bubble.

Oh well, back to the drawing board……….

Miss Parrott’s last day

Today was the very last day of teaching for Miss Parrott at Kirkcolm Primary.  And, as one final surprise a  former pupil of hers, Heather Nicol came into school to play her out on the bagpipes.  Amongst the selection Heather played, was the favourite of Miss Parrot “The lion sleeps tonight”, and the “Hokey cokey”!  The whole school and some parents came along to join in the fun.

Everyone at Kirkcolm Primary would like to wish Miss Parrott all the very best as she moves onto pastures new.

Davey represents the school at Primary golf competition

Davey headed off to New Galloway Golf Club last Thursday, accompanied by his dad, to represent Kirkcolm Primary at the Regional Primary Schools’ Golf Competition. He enjoyed a day of glorious sunshine on a stunning golf course.  He played to 5 under his handicap with a net score of 22 over nine holes with excellent comments from the accompanying coach regarding his fairway approach shots and putting.  Davey finished just outside of the prizes, and had a great day of golf.  He demonstrated just what a responsible citizen he is by taking part and being a good ambassador for our school.  Well done!
