Road Safety with the Baldy Bane Theatre Company

Kirkcolm p 6 & 7 visited Portpatrick primary school to take part in a road safety workshop. The themes in the workshop covered safe places to play, riding bikes wearing a helmet and crossing the road safely with the lollipop person.

The Baldybane theatre group presented a series of tableaux role plays focused on risk at an age appropriate level.  The children were involved in the sessions through discussion, questioning and ‘director’ participation to lead the action.  The pupils were encouraged to give suggestions and advice on how to keep ourselves safe on the busy roads that they encounter now and in the future when the transition to the Academy.  The session provided thought provoking material.

Curling’s Cool

Primary 7 pupils headed to the North West Castle this morning to participate in the Curling’s Cool taster session along with Leswalt, Portpatrick and Park P7s. They worked hard to learn how to deliver the stone and sweep it towards the target (and walk on the ice without slipping and sliding!!).

They arrived back at school very enthusiastic and keen to join the Curling’s Cool Club – we could have the next Eve Muirhead in our midst! Have a peek at the photos to see what a fun morning they had.

Sporting Fixtures at Kirkcolm

Innes and Guy are going to play in a Rugby tournament  for Wigtownshire Minis at Moffat this Sunday.  We are looking forward to hearing the results of this.  Keep an eye out in the Six Nations for future stars!!

Robin and Cody are going down to Annandale football club on Saturday to play.  Again we hope there is a huge score from the Lochryan Boys Club, Good Luck boys!

Congratulations to our three Solway League swimmers who swam in the Newton Stewart and Ryan Centre pools to compete against the Merrick Mavericks and the Dumfries Dolphins.  On both occasions Logan, Davey and Finlay were successful in beating their opponents.  The boys are looking forward to timing their laps to swim at competitive levels.

History Alive

All upper school children from Kirkcolm, Portpatrick and Leswalt had a thoroughly enjoyable morning as history was brought to life in front of their eyes.  Children were led on a historical Scots journey through medieval times, learning about William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.  They were told about the many battles fought with clever tactics and lands plundered. The children were enthralled at the costumes, flags and swords on display that they were able to handle.  A fantastic opportunity to learn about this period of time.

Coding at Kirkcolm

The P6/7 children have been coding this morning using a programme called Scratch.  We have made a ghost busters game using sprites and commands to change size, movements, time and sound. Jack and Findlay said “It was the best thing we have done on the computer” so far!  Thank you Miss Creighton, RAiSE Team.

Rotary Lunch

Our Trip To The Rotary Lunch

On Monday the 15th January, Sophie and I went to the North West Castle for the rotary lunch. There was an Olympic curling champion  called Greg Drummond, and lots of other important people, including my golf teacher saying a few words and thanking everyone for coming. After he had finished his speech, we had our lunch, soup for starters and chicken salad or fish and chips for main. Then my golf teacher said a few more words. Greg came to the front, and showed us a couple of videos about his career, after that we got a picture with him and I got to hold his silver medal, and it was really heavy.  And that is what happened at the Rotary lunch.

Cracking Christmas Party!!

Pupils got dressed up in their festive finery on Tuesday for our school Christmas party! The afternoon kicked off with a delicious buffet lunch provided by our cook, Ann-Marie – there were plenty of savoury snacks and sweet treats on offer for everyone to enjoy.

We then started the party games, which were all planned and organised by Primary 6/7 pupils. Games included Pass the Present, Christmas Corners, Musical Arms, Musical Snowmen, along with some social dancing.

At 2.30pm a special visitor arrived. We know that Santa is very busy at this time of year, but we had our fingers and toes crossed that it was him – and it was!! He kindly came bearing gifts for all the boys and girls.

Everyone had a wonderful afternoon!

Stranraer Academy Xmas Transition Challenge

Well done to the four pupils from Kirkcolm school who went to the Academy last week to represent their school at a fun Maths Transition challenge. The team consisted of Iona, Ivy, Robin and Finlay. The challenge began with an Activity Pack full of Christmas themed maths puzzles and problem solving, as well as a complex cube building challenge and a ‘Tarsia’ hexagon challenge.

Following this, the teams were given a pack of spaghetti, tape and one sheet of paper and tasked with creating the tallest tower. This was very entertaining!
The event was a great success and we look forward to participating in the challenge again next Christmas. Leswalt and Portpatrick School joined in the fun as well.
