Term 3 in P4

In Term 3 P4 have been very busy.

Literacy

Hali – we have been reading ‘The Legend of Spud Murphy’

Lucy – we have been writing reports and Heathhall school and France.

Pippa – we have been writing stories.

Poppy – we created our own story books.

Rueben – we have been practising our spelling words.

Lauryn – we have visited the library.

Numeracy and Maths

Fergus – we have been learning about division.

Jaimee – we have been learning about decimals.

Armaan – we have been learning about time.

Lucy – we wrote instructions for how to make pancakes.

Hannah – we have been learning our times tables.

Oscar – we have been learning about doubles.

Libby – we learned about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

Expressive Arts

Vita – we have been creating tartan.

Jaimee – we used watercolours to paint snowflakes and winter trees.

Harleigh – we did Scottish dancing.

Adriana – we learned Scots and Gaelic songs with Feis Rois.

Health and Wellbeing

Olly – we have been learning how to prevent food waste.  We made posters.

Jack – we made for pancakes on pancake day.

Aoibhe – we have been playing hockey in PE.

Pippa – we have been learning to play golf.

IDL

Harri – we have been sorting living things into categories.

Digital Technologies

Summer – we have been learning how to send emails.

Poppy – we have been using our research skills to research facts about animals.

World Book Day

Hali – we wrote about our favourite books.

Fraser  – we created origami bookmarks, character selfies and we completed an emoji book title challenge.

Beginning of Term 1 in Primary 4

At the start of Primary 4 we made a collaborative poster to decorate our class.  Mrs Boyd and Mrs Little wanted to get to know us better so we made some ‘All About Me’ bunting and wrote down what we can’t imagine our lives without.  We put all these things together in a display.  We drew our own self portraits and wrote about what we are looking forward to in Primary 4.

In Literacy we started reading a class novel called ‘Storm’ and we have been developing our comprehension skills using the novel.  Mrs Little has been focussing on descriptive writing and we have written descriptions of Roald Dahl’s ‘The Twits’, which we have already finished reading together, and the Roly-Poly bird from the same book.  We have also been learning new spelling words and practising these in lots of different ways.

In Numeracy we focussed on place value and in Maths we have been learning about grid references and we created our own islands.

In Skills Academy Mrs Boyd has helped us learn about algorithms and in Digital Literacy we have been learning about Teams and emails.

Our IDL topic is Geography and we have learned about the continents and are going to focus more on the UK and Scotland by using atlases and maps.

In Health and Wellbeing we have been identifying emotions and developing our drama skills to act our scenarios to show different emotions.

We have been very busy!

Term 2 in P6/7

This Term in P6/7 we have been continuing to focus on Literacy and Maths.  In Maths we have been learning about angles.  We all should know what an acute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex angles is.  We have been measuring different angles with a protractor and have had a go at drawing different angles too.

We have also focussed on number patterns.  We looked at Pascal’s triangle and Fibonacci’s number pattern.

In Literacy we have been writing different types of poems, reports and instructions.  Linked to our IDL focus of Festivals of Light we wrote a report about Diwali and created a game about Hanukkah, which we wrote instructions for.  We learned about Advent too and made a Christingle.  In Literacy we have also looked at the features of different types of traditional stories (myths, legends and fairytales).  We have had a go at comparing older and more modern texts.

In the lead up to Remembrance Day in November our class created poems inspired by Flanders Fields.  We then created paintings of soldiers walking through poppy fields.  Our class painted poppies onto stones and we took them home.  Some of us placed them on local war memorials.

As part of our Health and Wellbeing focus this term we looked at cyber bullying.  We created posters about the topic, they tell us what is wrong with this form of bullying and the effects of cyber bullying.  Our posters suggest ways you can deal with cyber bullying too.

As well as the writing we did about Festivals of Light we created rangoli designs.  During Diwali these are created at the entrance to homes of those celebrating the festival.  We designed ours and created ours in chalk at the school entrance.  We had to make them symmetrical.

Term 1 in P6/7

During Term 1 we have been busy in P6/7.  We have been focussing on Maths, Literacy, Digital Literacy and Health and Well Being.

In Maths we have been learning about decimals.  We have been looking at the place value of decimals, ordering, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing them.  The week beginning the 28th of September was Maths Week Scotland 2020.  Each day we looked at a challenge set by the Depute First Minister of Scotland, we completed tasks from the Maths Week Scotland website, we solved a Cryptography clue and we watched and discussed various women who use maths in their jobs.  Everyday we do mental maths to warm our brains up for the maths lesson.  We read the weekly issue of the Daily Rigour.  It creates maths problems based on current news stories.  We also follow a mental maths rotation.  In the mental maths rotation one group completes a mental agility booklet page, one group discusses mental maths strategies with the teacher and the third group answer questions on Sumdog.

In Literacy we have continued reading Oranges in No Man’s Land.  We have completed a word finder task using the book and have created literal, inferential and evaluative questions based on the text.  A partner then had to answer the questions we had created.  We created a mind map based on a news article and then used the mind map to write a summary of the article we had chosen.  In writing we have focussed on writing our own character and setting descriptions.  We are going to use these in a creative story.  The week beginning the 28th of September was the Reading is Magic Festival.  We watched various videos and listened to different authors.  We created our own cartoon portraits and were encouraged to be more creative by Cressida Cowell, the Waterstones Children’s Laureate. We took part in a Big Draw contest between two illustrators.

In Digital Literacy we have been using the My World of Work website.  We have been up-levelling our writing onto a word document and recording our learning.  We are using Microsoft Teams and our Glow email to access and complete our homework.  We have looked at how to stay safe online.

We have been creating friendship board games with Mrs Woods as part of Health and Well Being.  We have designed and created them and are hoping the P2 class will have a go at playing them.  During our work on friendships we have discussed different scenarios involving issues which can occur in friendships.

The Start of the New School Year in P6/7

During our first few weeks of school we have been doing all different things. As part of Outdoor Learning we have made kites. We went outside to see if we could get them to fly. We have been practising our spelling words outside too.

We also have been learning some Maths outside.  We had to answer questions and find the answers to them by moving around in a large circle.  We all had some must fun doing it.  We went on an angle hunt and have been measuring objects in the playground and round the measurements to the nearest cm.

In Health and Well Being with Mrs Woods we have made posters about how to be a good friend. We had to put what the ingredients are to be a good friend and how to make your friend.

With Mrs Boyd we have been creating self portraits. On one side we drew our face and on the other side we filled the outline of our head with images of what is important to us.

In literacy we are busy reading a book called Oranges in No Mans Land.  It is based in Beirut and is set during the civil war there.  Also in literacy we have been writing descriptions and information reports.
