STEM Career Visits

We had amazing visits by family members to share information about STEM Careers. We were particularly interested in hearing how the meta-skills we develop in STEM Challenges are applied in the workplace.

I can describe some of the kinds of work that people do and I am finding out about the wider world of work.   HWB 1-20a

Telecommunications Engineer with Open Reach

Harry – “I learned that a Telecommunications Engineer has to adapt to the weather, especially the high winds.”

Amelia W – “I want to explore electricity just like my dad.”

Isla Mar. – “I learned that Amelia’s dad leads 27 other workers and checks that they are all safe.”

Fergus – “I learned that the rats can cause problems with the cables.”

Working on a sailboat

Isla Mel. – “I learned that you use creativity on a sailboat. You work out how to make dinner when it’s bumpy weather.”

Fergus – “I would be interested in working on a sailboat when I’m older because it is fun and you always go on new adventures.”

Maisie  – “I liked trying on the life jacket. It had a whistle on it to call for help.”

National Gas – Operations Manager and a Technical Admin.

Aurla – “I found out that a Technical Admin. communicates with the helicopter pilot and then she sends out a technician to check the digging.”

Vincent – “I learned about methane and how cows have this gas too!”

Maxwell – “I learned that some underground pipes are so huge that people can walk through them.”

Taylor – “I learned that National Gas work with Health and Safety people including the emergency services.”

Dairy Scientist and Senior Scientist Vet Lab

Lucy – “A Dairy Scientist uses focusing skills when using a microscope to check animal samples.”

Sofia – “After learning about STEM Careers, I would be interested in becoming a Dairy Scientist when I’m older because I would like to help the cows get better too.”

Ritchie – “I learned that Mrs Porter has led other people in her job. She has advised people about fungus and trained farmers and other microbiologists.”

Duty Officer at the Ice Bowl

Blaine – “A Duty Officer has to adapt when the weather changes outside.”

Harry – “I learned that a duty officer communicates with schools, Cafe staff, young farmers and lots of other people at the Ice Bowl.”

Lucy – “Mackay’s dad leads other Duty Officers and Leisure Attendants.”

Amelia W – “I was surprised to learn that someone paints the lines on the ice at the Ice Bowl.”

Mackay – “I would be interested in becoming a Duty Officer when I’m older because I would get to drive a Zamboni and be in charge of other people.”

Trainee Pharmacist and a Pharmacy Technician

Isla Mar. – “A Pharmacist has to adapt to the patients. They might use easier language when speaking to older people.”

Harris – “A Pharmacist, Technician and Support Worker all communicate with each other.”

Mirrin – “I would like to use a robot to get the medicine for people at the hospital. ”
