Pupil Leadership

School Captains – Sophie Cluckie and Maddie Barr

So far into this year S6’s have been responsible for a handful of the events and behind the scene news, This includes, The Sports Committee, Events Committee, Charity Committee and The Buddies Project.

Sports Committee
The S6 Sports Committee is responsible for planning and delivering engaging sports events for the younger year groups, encouraging participation, teamwork, and enjoyment of physical activity. We organise a variety of activities throughout the year, taking full responsibility for planning, setting up, and leading each event.
Previously, we successfully ran an all-day football festival and a basketball event, where committee members took turns leading activities and managing different stations. This rotation of leadership allows everyone to develop organisational and leadership skills while ensuring events run smoothly and are enjoyable for all participants.

Events Committee

In our S6 events committee, we’ve helped to organise many events over the course of the last few months. We work together to plan and run a range of events, giving our group the opportunity to get involved and make the most of their last year in school.
This includes running bake sales, organising the senior ceilidh and Remembrance Day. Alongside these events, we’ve been very involved in creating the S6 yearbook.
The yearbook is a huge part of S6, and we’ve loved turning all these moments into something people can look back on. Hopefully we’ll have plenty more events planned before the end of our year at DEHS!

Charity Committee
S6 charity committee have previously organised a “wear it pink” day for Breast Cancer awareness on the 10th of November, in which they raised £198.49.
They also organised a bake sale for Children in Need on the 14th of November and raised £146.38.
They then went on to host a sweetie tombola stall at the Christmas Fayre on the 27th of November to raise money and collect donations for the local Machars Churches Basic Food Bank.
The money raised came to a total of £85.50.
Throughout the month of December, they also collected donations for the food bank to help those in need at Christmas time.

This term, they are working on spreading awareness to younger years about Internet Safety through an information PowerPoint that will be shown to them during CARE time. Fair Trade will also be taught, allowing them to gain a better understanding of what it is and why it is important. At the end of this term, they are planning a non-uniform day alongside a challenge for teachers and students to enter, which will be “guess the number of pom-poms in the jar.”
A hamper of sweets and treats will be awarded to the person who gets the number (or closest to it!) of pom-poms. The money raised from this will go to Comic Relief.

The Buddies Project
Buddies is an S6 ran project that helps bring together all years within the school. It is specifically aimed at young people who may need help or support throughout school or need a friendly face to say hello too. Buddies is split into two parts, Buddy tables, and Buddy cafe. Buddy tables is available to everyone within the school during break and lunch. This is a space where young people can sit with the S6 buddies and have their snacks and lunch whilst playing games or having a wee rant about their day. Buddy cafe is a project where young people need to be referred by their pupil support teacher or youth worker. Every Friday we all come together and enjoy games, crafts and milkshakes as-well as the additional sweet treat. Throughout this project we have seen young people gain more confidence and it has made a big impact in their lives.
