We’re back!…

And this time the torrential rain didn’t dampen us, in fact it was the ‘pond guddling’ that did!

This week was a clearing out week, the garden pond was becoming far too overgrown, so our welly wearing Garden Clubbers set to clearing out the brambles and plants. It didn’t take long to see the difference…

Angie presented us with a bird and bug and bee house, we found and spot to put them and were very pleased with ourselves!

Shout “Gardening Club!”

Brodie and ‘Snaily’

We also gave the woodland animals a lovely bright paint, the luminous colours are gorgeous! All they need now is a varnish and they are good to go, where do you think we should put them?? Maddy looks very busy here…

Thursday 1st June – No Gardening Club *sad face*

Due to tomorrow being an Inset Day and the pupils enjoying a lovely and well earned 2 days holiday, there will be no Gardening Club session. Jim the gnome is most displeased.

…However any careful and nurturing member of our group or community is more than welcome to pop round at anytime to do some watering, weeding or general ‘work’ in our much loved garden.

If you have any questions or would like to get involved, please feel free to get in touch with Mrs Devlin via her school email: gw08devlinjenna01@ea.dumgal.sch.uk

See you next week everyone!

More sunshine! Thursday 25th May

This week was a varied but equally as busy week at Gardening Club…

Some of the older group members cleaned, prepped and painted the raised beds to neaten them up as they hadn’t been painted in a while. Finlay, Kalen, Christy and Lucy did a super job and fortunately didn’t spread too much paint on themselves.

A small group were sitting under the shaded canopy giving some wooden animal decorations a white base coat. Next session will involve a more exciting lick of paint as some vibrant and exciting designs will be added…do you have any ideas for us?

The willow continued to be encouraged and weaved into interesting shapes and looks so much better than the wilderness it once was. A small group even started accessorising the weaves with flowers and interesting bits of nature.

The sunflowers seeds had went walkabouts so Logan, Josh and his mum sowed some alternative seeds for our garden.  Josh and Logan were very gentle in pressing the seeds into the compost, well done boys!

Next week the group will sow their own sunflower for the sunflower display that will transform the boring fence at the back of the school. P3,4,5 are a step ahead with their sunflowers growing rapidly in their classroom each day. Check out the School blog for more photos!

Weaving, weeding and watering – Thursday 18th May

Yesterday’s session was another extremely busy one, we’re certainly getting through the tasks we’ve set ourselves.

We started off our session with a delicious slice of rhubarb tart.  A few children had helped Angie pick some of the rhubarb that we are growing and Angie made it into a tart for us to try. We all agreed it was yummy! If you would like any rhubarb for yourselves please get in touch with Mrs Devlin, we have plenty to go round!

We had groups of children sowing some vegetable seeds, our long term plan is to eventually set up our very own ‘Farmers’ Market’ and sell our produce at the school gates and at events…keep your eyes peeled for that.

During the session we had another group weaving the unruly willow tunnel that had been left untouched for over a year. It needed to be tamed and put back into a tunnel shape, we think that it’s starting to look fantastic!

Another group were weeding the paths so that the stones can be replaced and the beds refreshed. Unfortunately the beds are getting to a point where they are starting to crumble so will be needing sorting as soon as possible.

We also had leeks, red onion and chilli’s to plant, kindly donated to Gardening Club by Mr Goodwin and Mrs Maclaren.

A very busy afternoon indeed!

If you would like to offer some time, plants or expertise to Gardening Club, we would be most grateful.

The sun is shining, the weather is sweet…Thursday 5th May

Wow, what a Gardening Club session this week!

This week we weeded, added manure to the raised beds, sowed lettuce seeds, planted potatoes and watered and watered and watered. We even got to add some of our very own compost that we have been making in our composter over the past few years. It was amazing and great quality so Angie said!

Thank you so much to the new parent volunteers that came to help, it made a huge difference being able to work in small groups, giving quality guidance and increasing the pupils learning.

We’ll be watching carefully and tending our garden as the seeds and plants begin to grow from seeds into seedlings.

We’re already hitting the headlines!

Castle Douglas Rotary Club donated a quantity of crocus bulbs as part of the Purple4Polio project last year. They recently returned for a visit to see what we did with them, and we can confidently say they were very impressed with our mix of seasonal daffies and bright purple crocuses.

Excellent work Gardening Clubbers!
