A huge thank you to our Parent Council for our new playground toys! The boys and girls were so excited when they realised that there were lots more fun things to enjoy sharing with their friends at break times. Just look at the smiles on their faces! Thank you Parent Council – your kindness is greatly appreciated!
We had the pleasure of welcoming Dean and Adam from YMCA for a basketball session this afternoon. They gave us lots of tips and tricks to help us to develop our basketball skills. It was great fun and we all enjoyed having a shot at shooting, passing, dribbling and playing a game! We will continue to work on our skills this term! Basketball players of the future? Maybe….
Hello and welcome everyone to session 2017-2018! Rested, energised and bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and that’s just the teachers (!) we are raring to go!
Lots of exciting, fun things planned and a fabulous team of staff and pupils makes for a winning combination to ensure this is going to be a brilliant year!

We are delighted to welcome Hamish, Brandon, Mark, Isla, Faye, Cara and Carys to Leswalt Primary and we know they are going to have the best time with us all!
On Wednesday the 28th of June the Leswalt A team were awarded with second place in the mixed relay Inter-Primary races. Laura McClymont popped in to present the pupils with their medals. The team came 2nd to Glenluce by a matter of milliseconds. Well done and congratulations to Jamie ,Emily, Megan and Kayleigh.

Excitingly, the pupils of Leswalt Primary were invited along for a wedding scramble last Friday. Jack and Iona’s mum, Karen, had very kindly organised this, even though she had plenty of other things on her planning list for her wedding to Ninian that day! We all headed along to the house just before the wedding car was due to pick up the bride, bridesmaid and beautiful Iona. We treated them to a rendition of ‘One More Step’ as we waited outside for a first glimpse of the ladies in the gorgeous dresses. Jack wasn’t there as he was with the groom, Ninian. Jack and Iona’s big brother, Dean, was giving his mum away and looked very smart in his kilt. He invited the pupils onto the driveway for the wedding scramble; Karen had organised a £1 coin for every pupil in the school. Much excitement and giggling ensued as everyone scrambled for their coin!
We then waved the bridal party off and headed back towards school. Some of us were just too desperate to spend our money, so Mrs Ferguson took a group along to Leswalt shop to buy some goodies. The rest were saving their cash for home – wise bunch!

Today Portpatrick and Leswalt pupils headed over to Kirkcolm to enjoy a ‘Get Together Day’! Initially the idea was to head to the shore for a Summer Eco Beach Clean in the morning, enjoy some playtime together outside in the sunshine at break and have a Inter-Schools Sporty afternoon, participating in races against one another in the June warmth. But the weather had very different ideas!
Still…we’re not ones to let the Scottish climate hold us back! So we put Plan BÂ into action.
We had fun singing our end-of-term songs together in the hall, then enjoyed games and fun activities in classrooms with our partnership buddies. A picnic lunch was held in the hall before we all headed off to the shore, braving the blustery wind. Working in teams of mixed ages and mixed schools, we had a fabulous time creating art out of natural objects found on the beach. Lots of creative ideas on show.
Yes, it was a bit wet and very windy. But did we let that dampen our enthusiasm for fun? No way!

Primary 5-7 have been really busy this term working on their HWB topic about Food Miles and Labelling. They have been using maps, working out distances using scale, calculating portion size and cost, working within a budget and pricing products to ensure a profit is made – all life skills I’m sure you’ll agree!
After lots of planning, this morning the pupils set to making their Healthy Snacks to sell at break time to their school friends. It was a busy classroom, with everybody working together to make sure they were following food hygiene rules whilst creating yummy snacks for everyone’s tummies!
The pupils calculated that £8.10 had been spent on ingredients and a profit of £11.40 was made! Excellent work by a very hard-working team! Now how will we spend our hard-earned cash….
P1-4 , Mrs McKnight, Mrs Smith and Mrs Dinsmore headed off to Largs on Tuesday to enjoy a fun day in the sunshine in Largs!
Their first pit-stop was at Vikingar where they saw lots of artefacts and had a chance to dress up as Vikings. The class have really enjoyed learning about this topic this term and loved seeing the Viking rooms set-up at Vikingar!
Phoebe, Auryn and Erin got together to write about their most favourite parts of the trip:
We visited a Viking longhouse inside Vikingar and some of us got dressed up in typical clothes. We re-enacted making flour inside the longhouse – it was hard work! We met Odin – the Father of all Gods and heard all about Viking heaven which was known as Valhalla. We were allowed to visit the gift shop to buy some cool bits and bobs and then we had the best ice-cream ever at Nardini’s. There were so many flavours, it was really hard to choose – it was absolutely delicious! It was just bliss sitting by the seaside, enjoying ice-cream in the sunshine. It was a brilliant trip. We all loved it!

What a treat parents, family, friends and P5-7 enjoyed this afternoon! P1-4 presented their original production of ‘Dr Who and the Vikings’ – a time travelling expedition which showcased all the learning which had taken place in their class this term on this exciting topic. Mrs McKnight scripted this (hidden talents Mrs McK!) in collaboration with the boys and girls. Dr Who (Finlay) was ably assisted by his glamorous assistant (Phoebe) as they travelled back to the Viking era, meeting characters along the way who told them lots about the Viking way of life. The P1 boys had made their own helmets, swords and shield to wear too. We all learnt something new this afternoon. A highlight just has to be their fabulous song about the Vikings and their pillaging to the tune of ‘One Way or Another’.

Mrs Henry introduced the ideas of chance and uncertainty in real life and why it is important to think about the probability of things happening. For example, Mrs Smith had to wait for a day which she thought it was unlikely to rain so she could take the p1’s into Stranraer for their day of fun. They learned about vocabulary such as likely, unlikely, certain, impossible, sometimes and never.
The older boys and girls used numbers to record the probability of an event e.g. 1/5 chance, even chance etc. They played a dice game where they considered the probability of getting a certain number e.g. a 5 or a 6 in 6 rolls then compared this with what they actually got in real rolls. They realised that probability can help to think about the likelihood of events but it is not always right!
