Primary 6 science

Primary 6 went to Dalbeattie High School for science lessons as part of the early transition process to carry out a biology lesson. This will the first of three visits to the High School. They took part in a variety of experiments related to the senses and had lots of fun! They learned that a camel has two eyelids and there is a sound so high pitched that only children and teenagers can hear it!

Watersports with Primary 6

The Primary sixes recently took part in water sports activities at Carlingwark Loch and Loch Ken. We enjoyed kayaking and sailingwith the Outdoor Education Team. We split into two groups and alternated between the two activities.

Kayaking on Loch Ken was very exciting as we were out in the open water! We got to paddle in circles, make rafts as a team and practice getting in and out of quickly. We also got to have a swim at the end which was great fun! We had a fantastic time, the children loved it and were a credit to the school.

Stephen Heppell workshop-Inspiring!

Staff, pupils and parents were all invited, recently, to take part in workshops and meetings, led by Professor Stephen Heppell. The aim was to be inspired to think of ways to plan for an exciting new learning campus in Dalbeattie. Stephen Heppell is a world renowned leader in technology and educational design. His ideas and careful questioning engaged pupils, staff and parents alike into thinking about how best to plan for new schools which help our children learn to their full potential. The pupils, (who came from Dalbeattie Primary, Dalbeattie High School, Colvend, Kirkgunzeon, St Peters and Palnackie Primaries,) were particularly motivated to brainstorm their ideas using interesting writing surfaces. The event was a huge success and it has changed the way many of us are now approaching this important new development for Dalbeattie.

P7 Trip to Kingswood 2013

As usual the annual P7 trip to Kingswood Educational Activity Centre was a huge success. Pupils excelled in a variety of team building challenges in which they were able to use skills that are in place here at Dalbeattie Primary. There were also activities that took children out of their comfort zone; indoor and outdoor climbing, zip wire and archery were a challenge. AQll the children were justifiably proud of their achievements.

They also had fun getting very muddy during nightline which required them to go through an assault course blindfolded!!!! We really think that the Kingswood ‘experience’ is extremely beneficial for staff and pupils; it always ends up as the highlight of P7.

Reverend Hutcheson retires!

This is one of those entries that I wish I didn’t have to do as we are very sorry to lose our good friend Reverend Hutcheson. He is retiring as our minister and story teller extraordinaire;  we very neatly turned the table on him at his last assembly and told him a story of Charlie Cook’s favourite book which he thoroughly enjoyed. He had been with us through sad times and happy times and we have appreciated his support.

We presented him with gifts from the staff and pupils and his wife with a bouquet which she was delighted with.

We wish him all the best, we will miss him!

We say goodbye to Mrs Burrows who is retiring, Miss Duka who is going to a new job in Edinburgh, Mrs Dixon who is going to a new job at Heathall Nursery after many years service here, Rory Mc Latchie who has helped with the music in school and lastly Alex Brown who has been volunteering as classroom assistant and we wish them all the bset for the future.
