Investigating the strength of materials

We had fun seeing which material would make a good strong seat for Ronnie. Some materials were ok , but not so good when Ronnie had his heavy shopping with him!

We discovered that some materials have tiny holes in them when seen through the magnifying glass. These materials weren’t very strong.

We tried to watch the dvd clip where Dr Brain also tries a similar experiment but it wouldn’t work in class; so if you’d like to enjoy it at home, just click on the link.http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/zxj9tyc

ICT learning

Today in ICT we practised more class learning through games. We are getting very good at logging on quickly and saving games as favourites so we can play them again and again.

Here are some of the games if you would like to play them at home:

Needed…. a suitable material for an umbrella

We enjoyed finding a suitable material for an umbrella. We dropped water onto  a variety of materials and discovered which ones were waterproof. The shower curtain material was surprising as although it was showerproof, water did eventually come through this. Plastic and tin foil were the most waterproof materials. Thick denim was also quite waterproof, but many of us had tales to tell about when our jeans had got soaked on a rainy day!

At the end of the lesson, we tested Mrs Taylor’s umbrella and Alice stayed nice and dry. Miss Douglas was out with her class and she also had an umbrella with her. As it was made of a different material we asked to borrow it and Kayleigh can vouch for the fact that it kept her dry!
