Justine from the SSPCA visited the class this week to discuss the importance of caring for Pets and what the SSPCA do. We learnt lots of facts about different animal and talked about what to do if an animal was in danger or injured. We played games, watched video clips and completed a quiz. The talk was really interesting and we asked lots of questions.
We have been inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night painting. We looked at each section of his work and tried to recreate his beautiful work. We build up the picture by drawing, the using oil pastels then finally a watercolour wash. We talked about what we would see in the night sky.
Today as part of the Dundee Fit 15, we danced for 15minutes to Just Dance. The class all participated and even sang along to the tunes. Each day we will be raising our heart rates for 15 minutes by getting involved in a physical activity. This week we have walked and ran in the playground. Over the next few weeks we will try lots of different activities and record how they made us feel.
During maths time we played a game called roll a pumpkin where we had to calculate the number to draw parts on our pumpkins. In art we used a dotting technique to paint scary ghosts, then used our cutting skills to make a paper pumpkin. We enjoyed our Autumn party being all dressed up for the occasion and also the school parade.
We listened to a fire safety talk for the Scottish Fire Service this week. We have learnt about the dangers of fireworks and bonfires. We now know the important rules about staying safe and why we should go to an organised event. We can discuss these rules with someone at home.
We have been enjoying our mile walk this week through the Autumn leaves. We have been discussing the changes in nature and looking at the signs of Autumn around our playground.
To finish off our IDL learning on Dundee Mrs Brankin set is the task of applying all the knoweledge we had about landmarks around Dundee and make models at home. These were created for construction, Lego, junk and lolly pop sticks. We created the Tay Rail and Toad Bridge, Law Hill, Caird Hall, Dens Park, Cox Stack and Dennis the Mence. Lots of effort, creatively and fun had at home making these! Mrs Brankin thinks they are all fantastic! Great job 😀
Today we visited McManus galleries and took part in a creative learning workshop. We visited two different exhibitions based on Dundee past and present. We made sketches of artefacts and things of interest in the galleries. It was great to finally see some of the history of Dundee as we have been talking and learning so much about this, this term. We then used our sketches to create print block. We etched a sketch into a print block, then rolled the block with ink and printed it onto a group sheet. This was great fun! The finished prints showed all the different things we had looked at in the galleries relating to Dundee. We then took a little trip over to the D.C. Thomson building where we show lots of thing relating to the journalism industry in Dundee. We also had our picture taken with 3 Oor Wullies. We then walked around the Houf- the oldest cemetery in Scotland. Next we walked to the city square where we ate our lunch, looked at the fountains and the Caird Hall. We learnt about James Caird who built the hall in 1914. From there we went to see the Dandy and Mini the Minx statues and finally the penguins outside the city churches. It was a fun-packed day, where we learnt lots about our city, saw important and significant landmarks (even the Law hill, Tay Rail Bridge, Discovery, V7A and Slessor gardens from the bus) but the best bit was seeing 6 Oor Wullies!
This term during maths we have been developing our mental skills and written skills linked to place value. We have been ordering numbers, finding number more or less than and also making numbers with 4 digits. We have really enjoying playing lots of games and completing activities linked to developing our skills. We have played a games where we each have a number then have to make the biggest or smallest number using 4 digits. We decided to name the game place value people.
