Primary 2 – Home Learning – Monday 20th April – Numeracy

Some Numeracy ideas for today:

Circles

  • This game will help you practise taking away:

https://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_MinusMission.html

Select content 1-10 and choose the speed, I would start with slow.

(You may need to enable Flash)

  • Try these :

Draw a picture in your jotter to tell the story.

Cross out the things which are taken away.

Can you write the sum to go with each story?

Example:

There are 10  cakes.  You eat 2 cakes. How many are left?

Draw 10 cakes, cross out 2

10 – 2 =8

  • There are 10 fish swimming in the river.

6  fish swim away.

How many fish are left?

  • There are 10 flowers growing in a garden.

You cut 5 flowers to take indoors.

How many are left?

  • There are 10 socks drying.

8 socks dry and are put away.

How many socks are left drying?

Triangles and Squares

Using only these numbers printed in red, can you make the larger number printed in green?

You can add numbers together, take away or even use lots /sets of (multiply ) : x, using the 2 or 10 times tables or squares you can maybe use the 5 times tables too.

You may only use each number once!

Example

        1           2            9            10          11                                     18

Answer: 9 x 2 = 18

or  11 + 9 = 20 then -2 = 18

or 10+ 9 = 19 then -1 =18

Good luck!

Challenge 1:

2            3            6            9            14                                            12

Challenge 2 :

4            5            7            13          25                                            20

Challenge 3:

1            2            3            6            20                                            25

Challenge 4:

5            10          20          25          35                                            50

All groups

If you have any lego at home, make towers,  give each tower a value and play hoopla! Add the scores together.

ENJOY!!

Primary 2 – Week 2 Day 1 Monday 20th April- Literacy

Good morning boys and girls! Smile Face Wallpaper Free Stock Photo - Public Domain Pictures

Hope you and your families are all well.

It has been lovely to hear from some of you ( via comments section).

My adventure continued last week as I spent some time working in the hub, but am working from home this week, so will post some more ideas for learning.

I hope you have managed to spend a little time most days doing some literacy, numeracy and other activities , as well as playing, helping at home and hopefully as the sun comes out a little time outside.

The ideas on the blog are just ideas and no doubt you may find other ways of practising your skills or use the ideas in your pack.

Literacy

Choose 1 idea:

  1. Scavenger hunt  Ask a grown up to write some of the words from your sounds sheets on pieces of paper and hide them somewhere. When you find them can you read them all?
  2. Set 3 sounds (  established yellow and grey groups) – Play the game we sometimes play in school. Select a page with 2 variations of a sound from your set 3 sounds booklet ( maybe igh and i-e). Ask a grown up to write igh on one piece of paper and i-e on another. Place each piece of paper in different places in the garden  or room. The grown up reads a word from the sheet and you run to the appropriate spelling. Good luck!
  3. The adjectives game. Adjectives are describing words. Children who have been in my yellow Read Write Inc group will remember the game we played with Ronnie the rhino. Ronnie collects adjectives. We passed around Ronnie and described him:Ronnie is grey, Ronnie is cold, Ronnie is kind, Ronnie is old, Ronnie is clever, and so on.  I thought you might like to combine some learning about animals with some work on adjectives. First select a zoo and watch the animal of your choice on the web cam ( this is a great site) https://www.countryliving.com/uk/wildlife/countryside/g31784857/live-animal-webcam-zoo/Now, draw a picture of this animal in your jotter. Underneath list as many adjectives as you can. ( For example A penguin is…….., or A tiger is …………How many can you think of? Alternatively, you could do this activity describing a favourite toy.
  4. Needing a new book? Try :https://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/have-some-fun/storybooks-and-games/  There are many ,many books free to read online, with a read aloud version and some offer some comprehension questions- just click on the lightbulb.  They also offer fun at home with the authors and illustrators, giving ideas for art and challenges. Enjoy!!

Numeracy and other ideas on other posts.

Primary 2 – Term 4 – Week 1

Good morning everyone!File:Face-smile.svg - Wikimedia Commons

I hope everyone is well. What a strange school holiday we had!

Well our adventure continues this term with more school learning done at home.

I hope you manage to find a routine where you are able to set aside a little part of the day to keep that learning going. Try to include a little literacy, a little numeracy and a little excercise each day. You might also want to include some making – cut and stick, drawing,  construction or helping a grown up with the preparation of games.

Now, I know Mrs MacPhail has said that some teachers are taking turns to work in the “hub” and our home learning will reflect that.  It is my turn this week , so I will post some work for you to do, but I will give work in more detail on days when I am not working in the hub.

So, ideas for this week.

Literacy

Please read!

There are so many lovely books to choose from on Oxford Owl

( login details on home learning folder) as mentioned last term:

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/please-log-in

Just go to class login and select a book to read. Each book also has  2 activities .

Alternatively read a book you have at home. Enjoy!!

Please practise the sounds on your sounds chart. Choose one that is new to you. For pronunciation , please go to:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7hRbrpq5Bo

for set 2 sounds, or for set 3 use:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-Y4Ha4e7j4&t=46

Play “schools” with your sounds chart ( in home learning pack). Point to the sounds for your family/ lego men/cuddly toys to answer!

Do the hold a sentence activity, described in last term’s posts.

Here are some more sentences fro those using set 3 sounds

( established yellow and grey groups):

oi – I will spoil the boy.

i-e – I like to smile at the boy

o-e – He broke his phone at home!

u-e : I made up a tune to sing in June.

Numeracy

Squares and triangles keep practising counting in 2s, and 10s  ( and 5s for squares)and the tables.

These games help:

https://www.primarygames.com/holidays/thanksgiving/games/turkeytwos/

for 2 times tables

https://www.primarygames.com/holidays/thanksgiving/games/turkeytens/

fro 10 times tables

https://www.primarygames.com/holidays/thanksgiving/games/turkeyfives/

for 5 times tables

If you think you know them well try the challenges in:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Select level 2 , then multiplication. How quickly can you solve the sums??

A little bit of excercise to practise counting in 5s:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amxVL9KUmq8

Try these using your paper rods ( in pack) or your knowledge of the times tables.  Can  you draw the answer and write the sum?

  • Tesco have multibags of crisps.

Each bag has 5 individual bags in it.

If you buy 3 large bags, how many bags are there altogether?

  • 4 hens lay 10 eggs each.

How many eggs are there altogether?

  • You have 3 packs of burgers.

Each pack has 2 burgers in it. How many burgers altogether?

  • There are 6 pairs of socks on the washing line.

How many socks are there altogether?

Circles: Keep playing the games suggested last term and items in your pack. This game is fun – join the dots ( choosing the range of numbers you can manage) . Remember you have a 100 square in your pack to help you.

Literacy

Please try any activities already detailed earlier this week on posts or from your learning pack.

Read Write Inc

Please keep practising the sounds on your sound chart.

Choose a sound from your sounds booklet and complete the activities mentioned earlier this week ( reading, “Fredding” and writing).

Today you might want to try something we do in school called

” Hold a sentence”.

Select a sound from your booklet – for example ay. Ask a grown up to write the sentence to match the sound from the list below:

Look at the sentence and check to see if it has any red words. Think about why they are red words ( remember we cannot sound these out). Spell any green words by ” Fredding”. Check to see if there are any capital letters and a full stop or other punctuation.

Now, ask the grown up to read the sentence aloud. Say it aloud yourself, many times , in different voices. We have great fun doing this at school- maybe choosing an excited voice, a disappointed voice, a loud voice , a quiet voice, a crazy voice, etc!

Now, let the grown up hide the sentence and you write it in your jotter.

CHECK IT to see how well you did!

Sentences to use for Hold a sentence with set 2 sounds.

Here’s the link again for these sounds:

ay – May I play with you?

ee- I can see you in the tree.

igh- It is not light at night.

ow- He can blow the snow.

oo- Too much food in the pool!

oo- He took my book.

ar – It is hard to start this car!

or- This horse is too short.

air – His hair is fair.

ir- The bird is playing in the dirt.

ou – You can shout out loud!

oy- The boy is playing with a toy.

Sentences to use for Hold a sentence with set 3 sounds.

Here’s the link again for these sounds:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-Y4Ha4e7j4&t=46

a- e        I can make a good cake.

ea          Please make me a cup of tea.

More sentences for set 3 sounds will follow later.

Have a wee dance and smile!!

Here’s a selection of ideas to add to your pack to help with today’s learning at home.

Numeracy

How about a game of musical numbers?

Building Number Sense to 20: What All Teachers Ought To Know

Write a selection of numbers on pieces of paper and place them on the floor. Dance around to your favourite music. Ask a grown up to stop the music. When the music stops pick up 3 pieces of paper each and add the numbers together. The person with the highest score wins. GOOD LUCK!

Or  join the dots in 2s  ( triangles and squares group)

http://www.hbschool.com/activity/connect_the_dots/

Again, please enable flash on your computer.

Skittles

Online Shop Genuine skittles bao Xinbao Little Bear Plush Toys ...

Make a line of cuddly toys or pieces of junk ( empty cereal boxes and margarine tubs) or even a row of flowerpots!

Put a number on each one, maybe the same ones you used for musical numbers.

Roll a ball ( or rolled up pair of socks) at the “skittles”. Add up the scores on the “skittles” you hit.

This game can be played indoors or outside.

HAVE FUN!!

Find a number:

Circles and triangles group might like to practise finding a number. Play this game and use your 100 square in your pack to help you.

Here’s a selection of other ideas to keep you busy:

Art and crafts

Last week we made a paper boat using just one piece of paper.

The following ideas need just one piece of paper, which you may have at home or take the middle page out of your jotter or use a page from a leaflet , magazine etc you may have and not need.

You will need an adult’s help so please wait till they have a little time to help…..

Primary 2 – Home Learning day 4 – Thursday 26 th March – post 2

Welcome back!

Literacy

In class last week some of us had great fun guessing the answer to a story about a horse and a snail. We watched and listened to part of the story then guessed the ending  which we wrote. Then we watched and listened to the rest of the story to see if ours was the same or different.

Today please listen to and watch the following clip, stopping it at 01:35.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z74n6v4/articles/z4htxyc

( go to the listen section)

Image result for Yuck said the Yak by Alex English Part of English and Literacy Word waves

Talk to an adult about what might happen next and write the ending in your jotter . Draw the picture of the ending too.

Remember all your writing targets as you write. ( capital letter, full stops, finger spaces , spelling , right order, neat writing)

Once you have finished your writing, watch and listen to the ending. How did your version compare ?

Enjoy!!

Today’s reading:
