11.2.20 Body Systems

Hi all!

We continue to be very busy in primary 5H. We have been working on our topic, Body Systems, focusing on the digestive and respiratory systems. We used GoNoodle to raise our heart rates and checked our pulses pre, during and post workout to see how our bodies are affected by exercise. We also completed the cracker challenge. Mrs Hunter gave us 3 plain crackers that we had to try and eat in a minute without a drink! This showed us how our saliva glands can not process quickly enough. We all thought this was rather silly!

We have been continuing to read our class novel, The Land of Roar, and get very upset at the end of chapters as we want to know what happens next. We are making predictions about what might happen next and discussing key points of what we have been reading.

We have finished our block of time in maths. We did a lot of work on converting between analogue and digital. We worked on am and pm and using them appropriately.

We continue to add information to our class BLOG and this will be updated weekly.  Our BLOG can be accessed via the school website.

Learning focus this term:

This term we will be learning about Body Systems.

Through our topic we will be learning about/to:

  • The effect of alcohol, drugs and poor diet on the body.
  • The function of the major organs in the body.
  • How tissues and organs formed.
  • What the sensory organs are and how they help me.
  • How my body responds to external influences.

Core Literacy:

  • We will develop our writing by working on the tools for writing, including using paragraphs correctly; identifying direct speech and continuing to develop the use of sentence openers, connectives and punctuation.
  • We will be using our topic as a stimulus for writing in a variety of different styles, such as report writing, information sheets and posters.
  • Children will be given opportunities to develop their listening and talking skills through a variety of class based activities, cooperative group work and presenting a talk to the class.
  • During class reading lessons, the children will continue to implement a range of comprehension strategies.  They will have the opportunity to use Blooms Buttons and Book Detective strategies to check their comprehension

RME/ Health and Wellbeing

This term our RME focus will be Islam.

As a Health Promoting school we actively encourage and teach our children to make healthy choices, to enable then to become healthy, active and emotionally resilient young people of the future.

We are delighted to be able to continue to deliver 2 hours of PE a week as well as opportunities for children to be active in our fabulous new grounds.

We would appreciate your support in promoting a healthy and balanced diet, both in your child’s morning snack and in their packed lunch.  We would discourage any type of fizzy juice in school or energy drinks.  Children are encouraged to bring in a water bottle, which they can use during class time and refill during the day.  There are water fountains situated throughout the school for daily use.

Please encourage your child to participate in the Active Sports Clubs that are on offer at lunchtimes and after school, as well as any school based clubs that take place throughout the year.  Keep looking in school bags for further information.

A reminder that all children who cycle or scooter to school must wear a safety helmet and ‘walk’ their bikes whilst in the playground. There are bike racks available.

Class Birthdays

We always celebrate if a member of the class has a birthday however we would request that birthday cakes are not brought into school to share with the class.  In school, we have children with allergies who may be at risk from some ingredients.  The cutting up and distributing of birthday cake also cuts into valuable learning time.

Playground toys:

We have playground equipment for children to play with during lunchtime.  Please do not bring in your own toys – except for Golden Time on a Friday – so that we can be sure that all toys in the playground belong to the school.  Many thanks for your support.

Golden Time toys:

Children can bring a ‘toy’ to school on a Friday to play with during Golden Time.  Please remember that the school cannot take responsibility for the safety of these toys and therefore we request that your child does not bring in expensive/electronic items without your consent.  We appreciate your support with this matter.

Mobile Phones:

Children may bring a mobile phone to school however these will be stored in a locked classroom cupboard until home time and cannot be used during class time.

Book & Blether:

Please look out for further information on the dates and times for Book and a Blether.  These are a chance for parents/carers to spend time with their children promoting reading.

I look forward to working in partnership with you this session.

Kind regards

Mrs Hunter

Wk beg. 13.1.20

Hi all, Happy New Year, hope you all had a fabulous break and are looking forward to 2020.

We have had a busy start to the new term with a new topic, novel and new areas to learn about in maths.

In maths, we have been focusing on division. Some of the groups have been using the written algorithm for division and this has been a new concept which has tricky at times.

We have a new novel called “The Land of Roar” by Jenny McLachlan. It is about twins that made up an imaginary land called Roar when they were 5. They are now 11 and Grandad has been taken into the land of Roar by the scarecrow Crowky. They need to return to Roar and save Grandad. We are loving it so far.

On Thursday, we had a visit from the SSPCA and we worked of some robot cats. We had to code the robot cat based on our information cards. They explained the feelings that the cat was experiencing due to the situation it was in. We enjoyed the session and this helped us think about animal welfare.

Also on Thursday, we watched the Live Lesson on the BBC about this years, 500 words competition. We will be working on our stories for the competition over the coming weeks. We are all very excited about the fact that the final is being held at Buckingham Palace and would love to get there!

Our new topic is Body Systems. We are building on our prior knowledge of the human body and thinking about how the different systems like the digestive and respiratory systems work. We will also be talking about how smoking, drugs and alcohol effect the body and these systems.

We will keep you posted on twitter and Seesaw with our pieces of information and pictures!

16.12.19 Its been a busy couple of weeks!

Hi all,

We have been very busy with the Christmas concert preparations, making sure we knew all the song words of by heart. We really liked the Robbie Williams song, Let’s not go shopping! We did very well at the 4 concerts. This week we will be learning songs for the church service on Friday.

We have been focusing on multiplication and division this term and applying our knowledge in a variety of settings. We have enjoyed singing our tables to help with quick recall of the facts. We have used think boards to show our answers in different ways.  We have also been doing problem solving maths challenges that have a Christmas theme. We need to work in pairs and use our prior knowledge to complete the tasks.

We watched The Snowman and then put ourselves in the position of the young boy in the story and wrote about our journey to the North Pole with our snow person.

We have been working incredibly hard in remembering and doing our dances that we have learned previously. We have been working in pairs and working alongside other classes as we will be using these skills at our party on Wednesday.

We hope that you all have a fabulous break and enjoy the festive holidays. Merry Christmas!

P5H 15.11.19

This week, we have been sharing our learning and knowledge of coding and using the code.org website with P5E. We helped them access the website and get through the first few lessons. We have been using the website to improve our problem solving  and coding skills.
We have over the last week been logging into Glow and using a variety of the different features of the website. We have been emailing, using sway to create presentations and changing setting to personalise the website to us. Whilst using Sway, we have been learning more about Fair Trade and how that impacts on farmers in lots of countries.
Our class novel is Wonder. We have been reading more and hearing about situations from different points of view. We have written diary entries from the point of view of August about the time of Halloween. We had to focus on the emotions and feeling of August at such an emotional time for him.
During maths sessions, we have been using a variety of different strategies to work on our multiplication skills and knowledge. We have using Maths Rockx, magimixers and textbook work to do our learning in a variety of ways.
We took a look back at our previous topic of the Romans and used a new app called Google Expeditions to have VR and AR experiences of being in the Roman times. We were in the middle of Roman battles and gladiator fights in the Colosseum.

Bye for now.

8.11.19 P5H Bananas and singing!

Hi all, we have been incredibly busy over the last couple weeks with our sharing of learning afternoon and all the prep that goes into such a busy afternoon. We were lucky to have Mrs McKenna watching our Rocking Romans musical. She even sent an email commenting on how fabulous we were!

We have been reading more of our class novel ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio. We are finding that it is an emotional rollercoaster following the story of Auggie and his family.

We have introduced a new topic this week based on Fair trade. We have listened and researched about the journey of the banana. We discussed what fair trade is and how this impacts the farmers lives. We were creating PowerPoint’s in pairs and trios about this subject.

As a class, we have been working on our multiplication. We have been using this in our mental maths sessions, singing with the Maths Rockx app (we love it!) and working on the written formats for multiplication as well.

We have been working on our writing this week. Mrs Hunter gave us options of images to help with our imagination. We had to focus on the beginning, middle and end of the story and think about the description.

Bye for now!

25.10.19 P5H

Welcome back after the October holidays! Hope you lol had a fabulous time.  We have everyone back after all of their adventures.

This week, we have started assembly preparations. We are looking forward to having you all see us on the 2nd November. We will be presenting our learning and knowledge of the Romans topic with a twist of a musical! We were doing some research on the Roman Emperors. We looked at timelines and what each were famous or infamous for. We have been singing lots and learning the lines of our characters.

We were working on our imaginative writing skills this week. We were given an image of a cave. After this we started to generate key words that may help us within the story. We then let our imaginations run wild as we created our individual stories.

P5H 11.10.19

This week, we have been continuing to read the class novel “The Wild Robot Escapes”. Roz the Robot has been trying to find Brightbill the Goose, her son, as they have been separated. Roz is now in the city and trying to blend in with the other robots and humans. Roz heard her son in the forest and went running to find her however there was a spaceship with the RECO’s above her.

Some of the class were representing Redwell at the Cross Country Championships. Harry M came first out of all of the P5 boys. We are very proud of him.

This week, we have uttered the C word. We have been working on designs for a festive card and these will be coming out after the holidays.

As part of writing and reading comprehension, we have been skimming and scanning for the key information about inspirational people from a variety of different backgrounds and across the world.  We tweeted some of the images of the work we were completing.

Enjoy the holidays and we will see you back for term 2!

P5H 4.10.19

We have had another very busy week in P5H. During our PE lessons, we have been continuing to work on our rugby 🏉 skills. We have progressed to playing games and ensuring that we are using the backwards or side wards pass.

In our writing this week, the focus has been on character description. We had to look at images and in a short period of time generate a description and create a back story for the character, we had to ensure that we were thinking about the character as a whole and not just the physical appearance. We then created our own character and had to weave the description into the story. We found this quite hard.

With Mrs Barron in art 🎨, we were drawing a Roman vase. We had to make sure that it was symmetrical and we had to shade (using paint) to show the light and dark of the the vase to make it look 3D.

In maths, we have been looking at Roman numerals as this is a historical number system and this links with our topic. We found it tricky to transfer this knowledge to complete tasks. We have also moved on to coordinates and thinking about positions of items.
Bye!

26.9.19 P5H Roman Patterns

On Friday morning, we used our skills from maths lessons to complete Roman patterns. Our patterns had to be symmetrical and we had a colour limit to our designs.

There were three groups, one was using squared or honey combed paper to create designs. The next group were using Hama beads, and the final group were using a variety of beans and pulses.

We had to use of of our school values to complete these designs. We were being resilient and continuing to work on designs even when we found it difficult.

We were pleased with our final designs. Even if it did take us a bit of time to tidy up after this activity.
