P5E 15/11/19

Maths – this week in maths we started a new concept chance and uncertainty. We were looking at different scenarios and thinking about the outcome. We focussed on key vocabulary to do this, here are our main 5 words – ‘impossible’ ‘unlikely’ ‘even chance’ ‘likely’ and ‘certain’.

We worked as teams to read different scenarios and discussed what the outcome would be…

We did a dice roll investigation with a partner…

We also played a game where we had to use this key vocabulary to follow the instructions…

Literacy – this week in writing we were learning to write a diary entry from the point of view of different characters in our class novel. We had to ensure we were including the key features to meet the success criteria (ask me what the key features of a diary entry are).

In reading we have continued to read with our reading partners. We then answered key questions to show our understanding of our books so far. Miss McEwan was very impressed with how well we all remembered and understood our books.

This week was anti bullying week, we made posters showing what bullying looks like and how it can make people feel.

Coding – We have started coding and will be continuing this every week, P5L very kindly came to our class and helped set up all of our accounts and guided us through how to work the programme.

Thank you for reading our blog 🙂

P5E – 8/11/19

Maths –  This week in maths we have been continuing our new concept co-ordinates, Miss Mcewan has been very impressed with how well we are all working in maths. On Wednesday we focussed on 3D shapes with Miss Robinson.

Romans –  This was our final week of our topic The Romans, so we completed it by making PowerPoint presentations to share our learning. We worked in groups to make a PowerPoint presentation to present to the class. We had to include key information about the Romans and make our presentation eye-catching to present to our audience.

We all proved that we know lots about the Romans.

Outdoor Learning Day – On Thursday we took part in the whole school outdoor learning day. We were using the outdoors to help us plan our writing. We had to think about our 5 senses and write key words to describe what we could see/feel/taste/smell and hear on our walk. We then incorporated these senses into our writing to help describe the setting, we all wrote some fantastic imaginative stories about an ‘event’ in the playground.

We were all set for the rainy weather.

Reading – This week we have started paired reading. We now all have a reading partner and we work with them to practice reading aloud with confidence and fluency.

Wonder – This week we have started our new class novel called ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio. We are using this novel in our literacy lessons, to answer key questions about the text. We are all enjoying Wonder so far.

Quotes of the week

“I enjoyed making the PowerPoint and outdoor learning day”

“We started the new class novel and it’s good and it’s sad. It’s called Wonder”

Thank you for reading our blog 🙂

Happy Halloween – 1/11/19

We are sorry our blog is late from last week but we were super busy with our sharing learning afternoon that we didn’t have time to do the blog.

Thank you to everyone who came along and joined us in our sharing learning afternoon. We all enjoyed being part of our assembly and sharing our Romans topic with everyone, Miss Mcewan was so, so proud of us all.

Halloween Disco – On Wednesday night we had our Halloween disco, we had lots of fantastic costumes and Miss Mcewan didn’t recognise lots of us. We were dressed up as pandas, circus masters, clowns, skeletons, bats and lots more.

Here are some pictures from the disco, who do you think looked the scariest?

Sharing Learning Afternoon – This week we were so busy in P5E preparing for the assembly. We were rehearsing everyday and working hard on our drama skills and singing. We were making props including a lectern, shields, helmets, a map and a holy bible.

Co-ordinates – We started looking at co-ordinates in maths this week, there is a special phrase that helps us remember how to use a grid reference – ask me what this is!

Adverts –  This week we worked in groups to create an advert to recruit Roman soldiers. We had to focus on using language to persuade an audience. We used all the features of an advert to record our very own adverts on the iPads. This was a great way of using our knowledge of what it was like to be a Roman soldier and incorporate this information into our adverts.

Thank you for reading our blog 🙂

Welcome Back P5E – 27/10/19

The Romans – This week we started working on our assembly for our sharing learning afternoon next week. We have all got our parts and are ready to rehearse for next week, we have been trying to get into character by practicing our lines as a class. We have also been practicing the songs – ask me to sing you one at home.

We made shields for our assembly props and they were AMAZING. Here are some pictures of the process. We will be using this for an interesting scene in our performance…

Writing – We were learning about how to write a newspaper article this week and how to make it as effective as possible. We worked in groups to make these and we had to make sure we included all of the key features of a newspaper article. One of the main features are the 5 W’s – ask me what these are…

Looking through some real newspaper articles…

Here are newspaper articles, we really enjoyed making these and Miss Mcewan was so impressed with how well we used our skills.

PE – We started gymnastics this week in PE with Mrs Morton and Mr Richardson.

Maths – This week we have been practicing our mental maths skills. One of the things we have been doing is recalling our times tables facts as a class.

Quotes of the week:

“We were working on our times tables by clicking our fingers to keep a rhythm”
“This week everybody got a part for our assembly, I am excited for the assembly”
“I enjoyed making our shields”

Thank you for reading our blog 🙂

Last week of term! P5E

We have had a busy last week of term in P5E, we are all ready and excited for a week off school.

In Maths this week we have been learning about function machines, we have all made lots of progress with this concept in a short amount of time. Miss Mcewan has been really impressed with how hard we have been working in maths. We also focussed on the ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ symbols because we kept getting these mixed up. Here are some pictures from an activity we did in groups…

Each week during ERIC we have to look out for words that we think are WOW words, we pick a few each week and add them to our board. Lots of us have been adding these words into our own writing to make our writing stronger. Look at all these excellent words…

Next term we will continue to find lots of new WOW words!

We were very lucky this week to be able to go and watch P6’s Alloa’s Great War show, it was excellent! Well done p6!

In class we have so many books in our library which is great but this makes it tricky for us to pick a book.  So we set up our classroom like a shop with all of our books and in the end we had to choose 2 we were interested in. This means that our library is much more meaningful to us, look at all the books we had…

“I hope everyone has had a great first term in P5E and enjoys their week holiday, I can’t wait to see what you all achieve next term!” Miss Mcewan 🙂

P5E – 4/10/19

We have had a very busy week in P5 with lots going on in the school.

On Monday it was Redwell’s 5th birthday, we celebrated as a whole school during an assembly. On Thursday we had another whole school assembly to celebrate Harvest. Every class performed their own Harvest song – ours was ‘We’re So Thankful’. We also donated food as part of the Harvest festival for people who need it in our local community.

On Wednesday we had a new teacher called Miss Smith, we made 3D hands which was really fun.

In maths this week we have been learning about expressions and equations, we have focussed on understanding word problems and turning them into number sentences. We have also focussed on finding the missing numbers and letters in number sentences.

In literacy this week, we had to make up the ending to our class novel. We thought about what could happen in the last few chapters and what we wanted to happen. We then chose an idea and wrote our own final chapter of ‘The Wild Robot Escapes’, there were lots of excellent endings. On Friday we finished our class novel this week and shared our thoughts on the novel – some of us liked the original novel better, but most of us really enjoyed this one.

Here is a picture of how our literacy wall is looking in class…

We had very special visitors in P5E on Friday afternoon – Mrs Boyle came to visit us with her new baby boy. We made her cards and we were all so excited to see her, thank you again for coming to visit us Mrs Boyle.

Thank you for reading  our blog 🙂

P5E – 27/9/19

Romans – We made Roman mosaics using different types of peas and beans. We had to challenge ourselves to make them symmetrical after focusing on symmetry last week in maths.

Maths – This week in maths we were learning about angles. We explored right angles, straight angels, obtuse angles, reflex angles and acute angles. We also used bee bots to give people directions using the four compass points and angles.

Art – This week with Mrs Barron we made Roman symmetrical vases.

Literacy – This week we continues our free writing, but we had to focus on adding exciting openers and adjectives to describe throughout our stories.

Quotes of the week

“We made very cool Roman mosaics that we made with peas and beans”

“This week we have been making Roman mosaics. In the Roman times they were made out of tiny little pieces of stone and glass and they were stuck to the floor”

“We did some animal mindfulness colouring, I liked it!”

P5E – 20/9/19

Roman Numerals – We continued working on Roman numerals this week as part of our topic and maths. We converted numbers into Roman numerals and then added them together. Some of us were able to memorise the 7 roman numeral letters and what they represent.

Roman houses and building –

We researched roman houses and buildings using the laptops to see what we could find out, we then shared what we had found and made our own pictures of Roman houses. Ask me to tell you the different types of Roman houses and who lived in them…

Writing – We continued to practice our skills in writing letters. This week we wrote letters to Jaya and Jad to thank them for helping Roz escape, we were writing our letter from Roz’s perspective.

Science – In science we have been learning about living things. We are all able to explain what a vertebrate and an invertebrate is. We then went out to the playground on an animal hunt and when we found an animal we had to group them into vertebrates and invertebrates.

Here are some of the animals we found in our playground…

Vertebrates – people, pigeons, seagulls, cats, crows and toads.

Invertebrates – Beetles, bees, flies, spiders, ladybirds, wasps, snails, butterflies, caterpillars, moths and slugs.

Quotes of the week

“At PE we did football, basketball and gymnastics. It was very tiring!”

“My favourite thing this week was when we were writing letters to Jaya and Jaya and it was very exciting”

Term 1 Overview

Miss McEwan – P5E

Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope you find the following information useful.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

General Information:

I hope you all had a lovely summer!  Primary 5E are continuing to settle in well and they are continuing to learn the daily routines within school.

We have already been working hard to establish a positive ethos within our classroom and have agreed on our class charter.  This will be displayed in our classroom and referenced daily.

The children have now all been issued with a red folder.  Please only use this for homework or letters, as they get ripped if they are filled with pencil cases etc.  Homework will be issued on a Monday and should be returned on a Friday.  Reading homework will be issued separately and information will be sent out in due course.

The children will take part in 3 PE lessons per week and these will be on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.  PE kit can be kept in school.

The children will earn DOJO points for positive behaviour and choices within the classroom and House Points will be awarded in the playground and when they are lining up.

We have been busy adding information to our class BLOG and this will be updated weekly.  Our BLOG can be accessed via the school website.

Family Learning Journals will be coming home so keep your eye out for these.  This is a great way for you to see what your child has been busy learning in class.

We plan to be outdoors as often as we can and as the good weather won’t last forever, I’d ask that you ensure your child comes to school with a jacket.  We have all been caught out by Scotland’s notorious 4 seasons in one day so bringing a jacket with them each day is advised.

Learning focus this term:

This term we will be learning about The Romans.

Through our topic, The Romans, we will be learning about/to:

  • Who the Romans were and where they lived.
  • What the Roman Empire was.
  • What life was like in Roman times.
  • What the historical impact of the Romans on Britain was.
  • How the Romans influenced society today.

Core Literacy:

  • We will be using our topic as a stimulus for writing in a variety of different styles and we will also be continuing to develop imaginative writing.
  • We will continue to use VCOP strategies to develop our writing.
  • Children will be given opportunities to develop their listening and talking skills through a variety of class based activities, including cooperative group work.
  • During class reading lessons the children will use Blooms Buttons and Book Detective strategies to check their comprehension.
  • Our class novel this term will be The Wild Robot Escapes by Peter Brown.

Core Numeracy:

  • Pupils will consolidate their understanding of place value. They will know that the individual digits that form a number each have a value of their own. They will be able to build and describe numbers in a variety of ways.
  • Pupils will use addition and subtraction to solve a range of written and mental calculations.
  • Pupils will continue to work on all multiplication tables and will be developing their quick recall of multiplication facts.
  • Pupils will develop their understanding of area.
  • Pupils will develop their understanding of expressions and equations by finding the missing number in a number sentence and they will use simple function machines involving all four processes.
  • Pupils will create shapes and designs with more than one line of symmetry.

RME/ Health and Wellbeing

This term our RME focus will be Buddhism.

As a Health Promoting school we actively encourage and teach our children to make healthy choices, to enable then to become healthy, active and emotionally resilient young people of the future.

We are delighted to be able to continue to deliver 2 hours of PE a week as well as opportunities for children to be active in our fabulous new grounds.

We would appreciate your support in promoting a healthy and balanced diet, both in your child’s morning snack and in their packed lunch.  We would discourage any type of fizzy juice in school or energy drinks.  Children are encouraged to bring in a water bottle, which they can use during class time and refill during the day.  There are water fountains situated throughout the school for daily use.

Please encourage your child to participate in the Active Sports Clubs that are on offer at lunchtimes and after school, as well as any school based clubs that take place throughout the year.  Keep looking in school bags for further information.

A reminder that all children who cycle or scooter to school must wear a safety helmet and ‘walk’ their bikes whilst in the playground. There are bike racks available.

Class Birthdays

We always celebrate if a member of the class has a birthday however we would request that birthday cakes are not brought into school to share with the class. In school, we have children with allergies who may be at risk from some ingredients. The cutting up and distributing of birthday cake also cuts into valuable learning time.

Playground toys:

We have a playground equipment for children to play with during lunchtime.  Please do not bring in your own toys – except for Golden Time on a Friday – so that we can be sure that all toys in the playground belong to the school.  Many thanks for your support.

Golden Time toys:

Children can bring a ‘toy’ to school on a Friday to play with during Golden Time. Please remember that the school cannot take responsibility for the safety of these toys and therefore we request that your child does not bring in expensive/ electronic items without your consent.  We appreciate your support with this matter.

Mobile Phones:

Children may bring a mobile phone to school however these will be stored in a locked classroom cupboard until home time and cannot be used during the school day.

Cuddle On Couch/ Book & Blether:

Please look out for further information on the dates and times for Cuddle on the Couch and Book and a Blether.  These are a chance for parents/carers to spend time with their children promoting reading.

I look forward to working in partnership with you this session.

Kind regards

Miss McEwan

P5E – 13/9/19

Writing – In writing this week we continued to write creative stories during free writing. As well as this, we wrote imaginative letters to Roz. Roz is the robot from our class novel ‘The Wild Robot Escapes’, so we wrote her a letter giving her advice on how she could escape the farm she is working at.

Romans – This week we started to look at what life was like for the Romans. We read fact files and picked out key information about what the Romans wore, eat and what their hobbies were. We made comparison posters and compared their lives to ours now.

When we compared hobbies we realised there were big differences. The Romans didn’t have much free time but when they did they liked hunting, going to chariot races and watching gladiator fights. Whereas, some of our hobbies in P5E are playing video games, drawing, dancing and playing football.

Maths – We are learning about Roman numerals in class, which we found quite confusing to think about numbers in a different way. We enjoyed this though and are going to keep practicing so we can solve some maths problems in Roman numerals.

PE – In PE this week we played games focusing on our skills in rugby. We had to make sure we were communicating with our team to make sure we could win the games. Mrs Morton and Miss McEwan were really impressed with our team working skills.

Here are some pictures of us playing the games and practicing our skills

Some people form P5E took part in cross country this week at Lornshill Academy. Well done everyone for trying your best at this and represented Redwell Primary school.

Here are our two quotes of the week:

“We were drawing our own front covers of a Roald Dahl book book today because it is Roald Dahl day”

“We did free writing where we have the lights off and relaxing music on, it was awesome”
