P5E – 22/11/19

Literacy –  This week in literacy we used our class novel to learn about summarising a chapter. We had to highlight key parts of the chapter and then summarise these using our own words. This was quite tricky but we will continue to practice this skill in reading. As well as summarising, some of us were illustrators and had to draw a comic strip showing the key parts of the chapter through pictures.

In writing this week we used different pictures to help us write an imaginative story. We had to focus on including WOW words in our writing and using correct punctuation throughout. We peer assessed our stories by reading them to a friend and then some people read their stories to the whole class.

World Book Week – This week as part of world book week, we all took part in an authors live activity. We rearranged our classroom so that we could copy the illustration. This was really fun and we all did a fantastic job of copying Alex T.Smith who helped us draw Claude…

Maths – In maths this week we have been focusing on multiplication and how we can use different strategies to help us solve questions. One way we did this was by using think boards, we started with a story that included the question, we then had to draw a picture diagram, use a bar model and write the calculation. This allowed us to use different strategies to represent and solve the question. We then had the chance to make our own think boards, we all did an excellent job at this and shared some of our think boards to the class.

We were also using buttons to build, describe and count arrays to help us with multiplication questions.

PE – We have been doing a variety of activities in PE this week including football, gymnastics, basketball, badminton and tennis. Here are some pictures of us in action during the gymnastics course…

We were very lucky this week as we got the chance to go and watch the P7’s assembly about Enterprise. They did a fantastic job, well done P7!

Quotes of the week:

“We have been doing a course all the way around the gym hall, it was really, really good”

“In Literacy we have been doing partner reading, it is fun!”

“In maths we have been doing think boards and i think it is really fun”

P5E 15/11/19

Maths – this week in maths we started a new concept chance and uncertainty. We were looking at different scenarios and thinking about the outcome. We focussed on key vocabulary to do this, here are our main 5 words – ‘impossible’ ‘unlikely’ ‘even chance’ ‘likely’ and ‘certain’.

We worked as teams to read different scenarios and discussed what the outcome would be…

We did a dice roll investigation with a partner…

We also played a game where we had to use this key vocabulary to follow the instructions…

Literacy – this week in writing we were learning to write a diary entry from the point of view of different characters in our class novel. We had to ensure we were including the key features to meet the success criteria (ask me what the key features of a diary entry are).

In reading we have continued to read with our reading partners. We then answered key questions to show our understanding of our books so far. Miss McEwan was very impressed with how well we all remembered and understood our books.

This week was anti bullying week, we made posters showing what bullying looks like and how it can make people feel.

Coding – We have started coding and will be continuing this every week, P5L very kindly came to our class and helped set up all of our accounts and guided us through how to work the programme.

Thank you for reading our blog 🙂

P5E – 8/11/19

Maths –  This week in maths we have been continuing our new concept co-ordinates, Miss Mcewan has been very impressed with how well we are all working in maths. On Wednesday we focussed on 3D shapes with Miss Robinson.

Romans –  This was our final week of our topic The Romans, so we completed it by making PowerPoint presentations to share our learning. We worked in groups to make a PowerPoint presentation to present to the class. We had to include key information about the Romans and make our presentation eye-catching to present to our audience.

We all proved that we know lots about the Romans.

Outdoor Learning Day – On Thursday we took part in the whole school outdoor learning day. We were using the outdoors to help us plan our writing. We had to think about our 5 senses and write key words to describe what we could see/feel/taste/smell and hear on our walk. We then incorporated these senses into our writing to help describe the setting, we all wrote some fantastic imaginative stories about an ‘event’ in the playground.

We were all set for the rainy weather.

Reading – This week we have started paired reading. We now all have a reading partner and we work with them to practice reading aloud with confidence and fluency.

Wonder – This week we have started our new class novel called ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio. We are using this novel in our literacy lessons, to answer key questions about the text. We are all enjoying Wonder so far.

Quotes of the week

“I enjoyed making the PowerPoint and outdoor learning day”

“We started the new class novel and it’s good and it’s sad. It’s called Wonder”

Happy Halloween – 1/11/19

We are sorry our blog is late from last week but we were super busy with our sharing learning afternoon that we didn’t have time to do the blog.

Thank you to everyone who came along and joined us in our sharing learning afternoon. We all enjoyed being part of our assembly and sharing our Romans topic with everyone, Miss Mcewan was so, so proud of us all.

Halloween Disco – On Wednesday night we had our Halloween disco, we had lots of fantastic costumes and Miss Mcewan didn’t recognise lots of us. We were dressed up as pandas, circus masters, clowns, skeletons, bats and lots more.

Here are some pictures from the disco, who do you think looked the scariest?

Sharing Learning Afternoon – This week we were so busy in P5E preparing for the assembly. We were rehearsing everyday and working hard on our drama skills and singing. We were making props including a lectern, shields, helmets, a map and a holy bible.

Co-ordinates – We started looking at co-ordinates in maths this week, there is a special phrase that helps us remember how to use a grid reference – ask me what this is!

Adverts –  This week we worked in groups to create an advert to recruit Roman soldiers. We had to focus on using language to persuade an audience. We used all the features of an advert to record our very own adverts on the iPads. This was a great way of using our knowledge of what it was like to be a Roman soldier and incorporate this information into our adverts.
