P5E – 27/9/19

Romans – We made Roman mosaics using different types of peas and beans. We had to challenge ourselves to make them symmetrical after focusing on symmetry last week in maths.

Maths – This week in maths we were learning about angles. We explored right angles, straight angels, obtuse angles, reflex angles and acute angles. We also used bee bots to give people directions using the four compass points and angles.

Art – This week with Mrs Barron we made Roman symmetrical vases.

Literacy – This week we continues our free writing, but we had to focus on adding exciting openers and adjectives to describe throughout our stories.

Quotes of the week

“We made very cool Roman mosaics that we made with peas and beans”

“This week we have been making Roman mosaics. In the Roman times they were made out of tiny little pieces of stone and glass and they were stuck to the floor”

“We did some animal mindfulness colouring, I liked it!”

P5E – 20/9/19

Roman Numerals – We continued working on Roman numerals this week as part of our topic and maths. We converted numbers into Roman numerals and then added them together. Some of us were able to memorise the 7 roman numeral letters and what they represent.

Roman houses and building –

We researched roman houses and buildings using the laptops to see what we could find out, we then shared what we had found and made our own pictures of Roman houses. Ask me to tell you the different types of Roman houses and who lived in them…

Writing – We continued to practice our skills in writing letters. This week we wrote letters to Jaya and Jad to thank them for helping Roz escape, we were writing our letter from Roz’s perspective.

Science – In science we have been learning about living things. We are all able to explain what a vertebrate and an invertebrate is. We then went out to the playground on an animal hunt and when we found an animal we had to group them into vertebrates and invertebrates.

Here are some of the animals we found in our playground…

Vertebrates – people, pigeons, seagulls, cats, crows and toads.

Invertebrates – Beetles, bees, flies, spiders, ladybirds, wasps, snails, butterflies, caterpillars, moths and slugs.

Quotes of the week

“At PE we did football, basketball and gymnastics. It was very tiring!”

“My favourite thing this week was when we were writing letters to Jaya and Jaya and it was very exciting”

Term 1 Overview

Miss McEwan – P5E

Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope you find the following information useful.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

General Information:

I hope you all had a lovely summer!  Primary 5E are continuing to settle in well and they are continuing to learn the daily routines within school.

We have already been working hard to establish a positive ethos within our classroom and have agreed on our class charter.  This will be displayed in our classroom and referenced daily.

The children have now all been issued with a red folder.  Please only use this for homework or letters, as they get ripped if they are filled with pencil cases etc.  Homework will be issued on a Monday and should be returned on a Friday.  Reading homework will be issued separately and information will be sent out in due course.

The children will take part in 3 PE lessons per week and these will be on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.  PE kit can be kept in school.

The children will earn DOJO points for positive behaviour and choices within the classroom and House Points will be awarded in the playground and when they are lining up.

We have been busy adding information to our class BLOG and this will be updated weekly.  Our BLOG can be accessed via the school website.

Family Learning Journals will be coming home so keep your eye out for these.  This is a great way for you to see what your child has been busy learning in class.

We plan to be outdoors as often as we can and as the good weather won’t last forever, I’d ask that you ensure your child comes to school with a jacket.  We have all been caught out by Scotland’s notorious 4 seasons in one day so bringing a jacket with them each day is advised.

Learning focus this term:

This term we will be learning about The Romans.

Through our topic, The Romans, we will be learning about/to:

  • Who the Romans were and where they lived.
  • What the Roman Empire was.
  • What life was like in Roman times.
  • What the historical impact of the Romans on Britain was.
  • How the Romans influenced society today.

Core Literacy:

  • We will be using our topic as a stimulus for writing in a variety of different styles and we will also be continuing to develop imaginative writing.
  • We will continue to use VCOP strategies to develop our writing.
  • Children will be given opportunities to develop their listening and talking skills through a variety of class based activities, including cooperative group work.
  • During class reading lessons the children will use Blooms Buttons and Book Detective strategies to check their comprehension.
  • Our class novel this term will be The Wild Robot Escapes by Peter Brown.

Core Numeracy:

  • Pupils will consolidate their understanding of place value. They will know that the individual digits that form a number each have a value of their own. They will be able to build and describe numbers in a variety of ways.
  • Pupils will use addition and subtraction to solve a range of written and mental calculations.
  • Pupils will continue to work on all multiplication tables and will be developing their quick recall of multiplication facts.
  • Pupils will develop their understanding of area.
  • Pupils will develop their understanding of expressions and equations by finding the missing number in a number sentence and they will use simple function machines involving all four processes.
  • Pupils will create shapes and designs with more than one line of symmetry.

RME/ Health and Wellbeing

This term our RME focus will be Buddhism.

As a Health Promoting school we actively encourage and teach our children to make healthy choices, to enable then to become healthy, active and emotionally resilient young people of the future.

We are delighted to be able to continue to deliver 2 hours of PE a week as well as opportunities for children to be active in our fabulous new grounds.

We would appreciate your support in promoting a healthy and balanced diet, both in your child’s morning snack and in their packed lunch.  We would discourage any type of fizzy juice in school or energy drinks.  Children are encouraged to bring in a water bottle, which they can use during class time and refill during the day.  There are water fountains situated throughout the school for daily use.

Please encourage your child to participate in the Active Sports Clubs that are on offer at lunchtimes and after school, as well as any school based clubs that take place throughout the year.  Keep looking in school bags for further information.

A reminder that all children who cycle or scooter to school must wear a safety helmet and ‘walk’ their bikes whilst in the playground. There are bike racks available.

Class Birthdays

We always celebrate if a member of the class has a birthday however we would request that birthday cakes are not brought into school to share with the class. In school, we have children with allergies who may be at risk from some ingredients. The cutting up and distributing of birthday cake also cuts into valuable learning time.

Playground toys:

We have a playground equipment for children to play with during lunchtime.  Please do not bring in your own toys – except for Golden Time on a Friday – so that we can be sure that all toys in the playground belong to the school.  Many thanks for your support.

Golden Time toys:

Children can bring a ‘toy’ to school on a Friday to play with during Golden Time. Please remember that the school cannot take responsibility for the safety of these toys and therefore we request that your child does not bring in expensive/ electronic items without your consent.  We appreciate your support with this matter.

Mobile Phones:

Children may bring a mobile phone to school however these will be stored in a locked classroom cupboard until home time and cannot be used during the school day.

Cuddle On Couch/ Book & Blether:

Please look out for further information on the dates and times for Cuddle on the Couch and Book and a Blether.  These are a chance for parents/carers to spend time with their children promoting reading.

I look forward to working in partnership with you this session.

Kind regards

Miss McEwan

P5E – 13/9/19

Writing – In writing this week we continued to write creative stories during free writing. As well as this, we wrote imaginative letters to Roz. Roz is the robot from our class novel ‘The Wild Robot Escapes’, so we wrote her a letter giving her advice on how she could escape the farm she is working at.

Romans – This week we started to look at what life was like for the Romans. We read fact files and picked out key information about what the Romans wore, eat and what their hobbies were. We made comparison posters and compared their lives to ours now.

When we compared hobbies we realised there were big differences. The Romans didn’t have much free time but when they did they liked hunting, going to chariot races and watching gladiator fights. Whereas, some of our hobbies in P5E are playing video games, drawing, dancing and playing football.

Maths – We are learning about Roman numerals in class, which we found quite confusing to think about numbers in a different way. We enjoyed this though and are going to keep practicing so we can solve some maths problems in Roman numerals.

PE – In PE this week we played games focusing on our skills in rugby. We had to make sure we were communicating with our team to make sure we could win the games. Mrs Morton and Miss McEwan were really impressed with our team working skills.

Here are some pictures of us playing the games and practicing our skills

Some people form P5E took part in cross country this week at Lornshill Academy. Well done everyone for trying your best at this and represented Redwell Primary school.

Here are our two quotes of the week:

“We were drawing our own front covers of a Roald Dahl book book today because it is Roald Dahl day”

“We did free writing where we have the lights off and relaxing music on, it was awesome”

P5E – 6.9.19

IDL – This week for our topic we have been making a timeline of key events from the Romans. We had to make sure our timeline was in chronological order – this was quite tricky using the dates BC and AD. Here are a couple of our timelines…

Maths – We practiced our chimney sums in maths this week to solve addition and subtraction questions. Also, with Miss Robinson this week we started looking at 2D shapes.

Comprehension – We started a different comprehension task this week, it is called the comprehension box and it lets us choose our own texts and progress through a range of different texts. Miss Mcewan was very impressed with how hard we all worked during comprehension.

We went to Alloa Academy to perform our Scot’s Songs, we sang songs we learned in P4 to the audience. In the break we were surprised by an amazing band called Rura who performed some Scottish and Irish songs for us. We had a great afternoon!

Quotes of the week

“We did Roman timelines to help us with our Roman topic”

We started our new comprehension that was really fun”

Thank you for reading our blog 😊

P5E – 30.8.19

Atlas work – We did some atlas work and searched for lots of different capital cities in Europe on the map. We worked in pairs to complete this task.

Writing – This week we also tried free writing for the first time in primary 5, we had 15 minutes to write a story about whatever we wanted. We loved free writing and can’t wait to do it again. Miss Mcewan was also very impressed to see lots of us using our WOW words in our writing.

PE – In PE this week we did the beep test, we were all very tired after this but enjoyed challenging ourselves to see how far we could go.

IDL – This week in P5E we started our new topic The Romans. We worked together to see what we already knew and what we wanted to find out. We have already learned lots of interesting facts about The Romans. Did you know they gave us straight roads? Tell someone at home another interesting Romans fact primary 5…

Quotes of the week

“When we had Miss Robinson on Wednesday she taught us all about Uganda”

“I enjoyed labelling the capital cities in the countries on the atlas”
