Reading

Reading may be an essential tool for life, but it should also be for enjoyment. The school has a well equipped library and online reading materials that children can access and use at home as well.

Reading Comprehension

It is vitally important that children are able to understand what they are reading and respond to questions which test their comprehension of the text. To do this, we work through a variety of activities, games and challenges to engage them in their reading. Building this strong foundation to literacy can mean that class reading books may appear lower than the types of texts they can decode at home, but it is important not to rush this.

Tips for Parents

Key is engaging your child in reading. Keep asking your child some questions on the text to engage them in the reading and help them develop their comprehension skills.

Also encourage them to read a variety of books (fiction and non-fiction) and try to take them to the library regularly. Click here for the Menstrie Dumyat Centre opening hours.

Bug Club

Menstie Primary School has acquired a reading programme called Bug Club and these books are available to access online at home. This site hosts a huge range of books to compliment pupil’s reading in class and engage them with reading.

Bug Club Logo

Each child has a unique homepage, and can log into it by following these steps:

1. Go to www.activelearnprimary.co.uk

2. Enter your login details found on the inside of your homework jotter. See Mr Scotland with any login issues.
Books have been allocated according to pupil reading levels and these will appear in the ‘My Stuff’ area of their personal homepages.Throughout the books there are quiz questions to complete and to answer a question, just click on the bug icon. When all the quiz questions have been answered in a book, pupils will earn ‘Active Learn Coins’ which can be spent in the online shop. Details will be sent back to Mr Scotland at School and your book will move into your personal library online.

Why not download a ‘Bug Club’ bookmark here and keep your log in details handy.
