Nursery – Story Walks

It has been another very busy and quick term in Nursery. The Children have been really keen storytellers, staff are scribing their stories and then the children are acting them out at story time. This has been great for the children’s creativity and imagination. Some very interesting stories as well!

Mrs Keal set up a Story Walk Outside around one of the children’s favourite stories Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. The children had to walk around the garden to locate the next setting in the story. They worked in small groups, using the props to act out the story. They were really good at changing the tone of their voices, as they played the different characters in the story.

Nursery – Numeracy and fine motor skills

To support our fine motor skills each child made their own Jam Sandwich for snack. They had to follow instructions and then use picture cards to re-tell how they made the sandwich in a logical sequence. In Numeracy we have been focusing on measuring the height, length and size of things around Nursery. Staff have been supporting children’s acquisition of measurement language. The children compared various objects and ordered sticks from shortest to longest or shortest to tallest. We even had a Wellie Throwing Competition in the Nursery Garden. Children were excited to measure how far they had thrown their Wellie.

Nursery – Religions from around the world

We have also learned about the Hindu Festival Diwali. The children enjoyed making clay Diya lamps, tasting Indian food and learning some Indian Dance moves.

On Remembrance Day, Mrs Wheat did a circle time with the children.  She brought in her Grandfather’s Medals to show the children. Afterwards, we took a walk down to the Market Cross in the village to lay a poppy cross  the children had made and we took a minutes silence. Currently the children are enjoying making Christmas crafts and are and preparing a Puppet Show Nativity, ‘The First Christmas’.

Nursery – Next Term

In Health and Wellbeing the children will be learning about the body and how to keep healthy. In Numeracy we will be focusing on 2D shapes and their properties, matching quantities of objects to a number and substituting. In Literacy we will focus on name recognition, matching letters in their name, word boundaries, syllables and rhyme. We will continue to act out familiar and our own stories, using puppets and props. We will also celebrate the life of Robbie Burns and listen to some of his poems and songs. Miss Clark will teach the children some Scottish Dancing and we will hold our very own Burns Supper.
