Outdoor Learning Teamwork

This afternoon we all went outside to work together on some important jobs, as well as taking part in a creative activity in the snow!

We cleared all the raised beds in the polycrub and had a good tidy up, so that we are ready to start planting and sowing seeds soon. Lucas and Ben harvested a giant turnip and Craig  found 2 big cabbages. We stacked and tidied all the plant pots and put any waste into the compost bin. Jamie spread some extra bark chips at the entrance where it’s starting to get muddy.

We also sorted equipment for our ‘Mud Kitchen’ and had a chance to have a play with it in the snow, making snow pies and giant ice creams. We think this will be a very popular playtime activity all year round! A big thank you to everyone who sent in old kitchen equipment for this project.

P1-4 have been learning about how animals cope  in winter so we decided to set up ‘Squirrel Cafes’ around the school grounds, using the pinecones we collected earlier in the year. Hopefully our local squirrels will enjoy a wee treat over the weekend while the school is quiet.

February is “Random Acts of Kindness Month”. Inspired by the book and animated film ‘Thread of Hope’, pupils discussed what kindness looks and sounds like when playing and learning outdoors. They then painted in the snow with warm and cool colours to represent feeling upset (cool) and the kindness (warm) that can help in those moments.

Finally, we warmed up with a cup of hot chocolate at the end of the session. Great teamwork from everyone this afternoon!

Making our ebooks in P1-4

P1-4 have been learning about animals who migrate, hibernate or adapt during our cold winters. They used their technology skills to make ebooks. They needed to decide which animals to write about and made sure to put them in the correct section. Some children took notes from the internet and drew pictures of their favourite animals.

Braemar School Burns Celebration January 2026

We had a lovely afternoon yesterday celebrating Burns, with entertainment provided by every child in the school. We heard poetry recitals and traditional songs, listened to music on piano and bagpipes, watched highland dancing and saw some wonderful artwork based on a Scottish theme. The children demonstrated courage and resilience, learning and then reciting their poems to a supportive, respectful and enthusiastic audience. We ended our afternoon with shortbread and a couple of ceilidh dances.

Here is a snapshot of our afternoon. We hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed taking part.

Friday Afternoon Creativity

Lots of creative learning going on in school this afternoon. P5-7 have been busy developing their sewing skills and their understanding of sustainability, through their ‘Cool Clothes’ project.

P1-4 were busy trying out their new easel, bought with money they raised at the school fair. Their construction skills are always very imaginative, but Lucas’s multi storey car garage is fantastic!

RME- Lohri Festival

Both classes have been learning about Lohri Festival, celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs. It celebrates the end of winter solstice and is on 13th January, the longest and coldest night.

Bonfires are lit and people sing and dance around the fire wearing bright clothes.

Sweet treats are eaten, including jaggery which is made from sugar canes.

We learned a dance that is used to celebrate Lohri. Click the link below to see P1-4 dancing.
