A Little Bit of History
Schooling was originally the responsibility of the Church and in Hillside it was organised by Brechin Presbytery.
In the 1770s the first school in Hillside was housed in a thatched But ānā Ben on the site of what is now School Way. At some point it was known as Loanhead School.
In 1811 the Kirk Session of Montrose erected a stone built school and schoolhouse for those in the Parish who lived too far a distance to attend school in Montrose.
After the Disruption of 1843 a second school was built further up the Village by Free Church. This was made of stone and had a house for the school master and hall for lessons.
The Education Act of 1872 brought education under the control of school boards and from then all schooling was undertaken in Loanhead School.
In the 20th century a large number of new houses were built in and around the Village and as the number of pupils attending the Village school increased there was need for a bigger school.
The building of Rosemount Primary School was completed in the year 2000. It was purposely built to accommodate children from the villages of Hillside, Craigo and Dun.
