GET READING! Sherlock and Zombies?

The Library Book group is currently reading Sherlock  Holmes stories and watching TV  and movie versions of the stories by Arthur Conan Doyle.  We’ve certainly had some stimulating discussions! If you would like to take part, come along and join us at 1:30 on Tuesday in the Library.

As for the Zombies…. the library recently broadcast an Authorslive webcast featuring Darren Shan, the author of such bonechilling titles as Zom B and Zom B Underground.

These titles are just 2 of  a 12 book series about B Smith, a teenager who must struggle to find a place in a world of racism, zombies and darkness.

To find out more, and to hear the author for yourself, come along to the library every lunchtime this week , when we will be screening the webcast again.

The Hobbit

Library Book Group and Pupil Librarians

The  Library Book Group members have been reading the Hobbit. Some of us have been reading the e-book version, with illustrations, the 75th anniversary edition, or the graphic novel version.  Some of our members have read the book before and  have also read the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so those of the group who are new to the story have benefited from their knowledge of the stories and background detail.

As a special Christmas treat , the group, along with the Library Pupil Librarians,  went to see the new film of The Hobbit at the DCA in Dundee. Everyone had a good time, behaved wonderfully and enjoyed  the film!

Hawks in the Library

Hawks in the library

Thursday 17th May

Did you know that a man with a big bird of prey goes up on the roof of the academy every day to scare the seagulls?
Robert Judd visited the library with his birds to talk about his work with these magnificent birds.
Logan Petrie launched the event with a very interesting talk about his visits to falconry centres in Scotland: he has held many different types of birds including  Harris Hawks and Golden eagles.
Robert then introduced the audience to Lara, a hybrid peregrine/saker falcon, specially bred to do work with  displays  etc., and Jerry the Harris Hawk.
Robert’s company is has been contracted to scare seagulls away from various Angus Council premises including Montrose Academy. He flies either Lara or Jerry every day and uses a lure (especially with Lara) to encourage the bird to swoop and dive. This is a really effective way of scaring the seagulls away, but Robert pointed out that it was very important that pupils put litter carefully into bins because the litter is what attracts the seagulls to the school.
At the end of the talk, which also included hints on how to tell the difference between a hawk and a falcon, Lara and Jerry very kindly posed for a photograph with their handler, Robert, and pupils who came to the talk
