Liam is a library volunteer at his school library. He wrote this blog post for the Scottish Booktrust Teens and Young People Blog and it was published on June 17th 2012. Here is what he wrote:
” Here at Montrose Academy library there is a chance to become a pupil pibrarian. We help out at the library, put away books in alphabetical order, hand out books, take returns and even sell items in the stationery shop. I am a pupil librarian and I help out at the library by helping to choose books for stock. I also help with the Primary 7 visit to the library and give any spare time to help out at our Fairtrade café’s World Book Day activities and fundraisers such as Children in Need and Red Nose Day. Pupil librarians can add their own personal touch to the library display boards and display shelves by showcasing their favourite books to encourage others to read. There are so many things to do at the library: go on the computer, take part in different clubs like the craft club and book group, and do homework. There’s also a comfy sitting area with beanbags where you can chat and read magazines or a book. We have a shop run by the Fairtrade Group where you can buy Fairtrade snacks. The library is something every pupil can get involved with. There has been a wiki created so that pupils can add reviews and everyone else can add comments about what has been added. Montrose Academy Book Group was formed so that it gets academy pupils interested in reading books and also taking part in the Angus Book Awards. The most read book by the book group for the Angus Book Awards 2012 was Iboy by Kevin Brooks, and it won! The library staff are very much a part of the book group and stay up-to date with the latest books and give anyone the chance to read them and give their view on the book. The library staff are going to revamp the book group by giving it a new name. A suggestion that was, “The One O’Clock Club”. There will be lots more new activities to do at the club and hopefully this will encourage more pupils to come along and take part.
The best thing about Montrose Academy library is that there is something for everyone.”
