Science of Sound

Today we started the lesson by singing  from ‘I wanna play in a band’.  The children really enjoyed this.  We then looked at how we might make our own music, using glass jars and teaspoons.  The glass jars only  really gave us one note, so we weren’t impressed until Ogo came up with the idea to put some water into the jars ….. and our band was formed! We now had 3 notes!  After playing in trios for a short while the class came together and we played 3 Blind Mice!

We were amazing!!IMG_0126 IMG_0127 IMG_0128 IMG_0129 IMG_0130 IMG_0131 IMG_0132 IMG_0133 IMG_0134 IMG_0135 IMG_0136

Active Handwriting

I decided that the children need to focus  more on their handwriting so I have introduced a handwriting session on a Friday afternoon.  The children work at one station a week and hopefully we will see an improvement in their handwriting skills.

The 4 stations this week were

  • writing with wet chalk
  • writing with paint
  • writing on gel within a plastic bag
  • writing on magnetic boards

The children all worked for 10 minutes with great concentration so we should hopefully start to see great results in their jotters too!

Terrific Telephones!

DSC05541After finding out about Graham Alexander Bell, we decided to make our own telephones.  They worked really well!  We decided to try them outside as it was quite noisy in the class with everyone making calls!

The next day we investigated with bigger cups to see if having bigger ears made you hear better.  The result was that it made little difference to our hearing!  It was a good fun experiment.

The children have learned so much about Graham Bell, hearing and sound.  Ask them at home!

Next week we are going to have a look at hearing different pitch using bottles and water!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year wishes to everyone.

2016 has started with Tartan Week!

The children have been very busy creating their own tartan design using tissue paper and printing.

We have written a fact-file about Robert Burns and re-told the story of his poem Tam O’Shanter.  All the children did a super job with this.

We also drew our self-portrait and created a lovely Tam O’Shanter to wear at a very jaunty angle!!

We have also been learning The Military Two Step and the Dashing White Sergeant.  The children all managed this very successfully and what fun we had once we had the music playing  – hard work too!

Christmas Round the World

We climbed on board the Polar Express this morning and travelled to Mexico.  We learned about the festival of Las Posados which starts tomorrow night and lasts for 9 nights.  The children enjoyed singing Feliz Navidad.  We had tremendous fun getting a gift from the Pinata.DSCF6483
