Engineering Skills

Today we learned all about the skills engineers need. We talked about;

1. Maths

2.  Problem Solving

3. Team Work

4. Working to a deadline

5. Working to a budget

We played some games that needed these skills. One of the games was to lower a stick to the ground as a team. It was harder than it looked.

We we also played a game in which the aim was to get a ball from one side of the room to the other using pieces of a pipe.

Mechanical Engineers

We got to learn all about Mechanical Engineers today. We attended a drama workshop where we made our own sweetie production lines.  We were making everything from Halloween sweets to bubblegum candy floss! Some of the groups even added sound effects to make them sound just like a machine. The lady who led the workshop could not believe how good we were.

Engineer N Our Lives

This week we are being visited by Engineer N Our Lives.

The Engineer ‘n’ Our Lives programme aims to help children appreciate how the skills they learn in school are used by engineers in real life.

The five-day programme consists of four curriculum-based challenges where pupils work as if they are engineers in the workplace.

The week culminates in a whole school Celebration Event where the children display some of their work and share their experiences with industry professionals and each other.

We will update our Blog and Twitter daily keeping you up to date with all the fun activities and experiences we are having.

Gliders!

Today we made gliders with Miss Petrie. We used paper straws so that they are environmentally friendly. We tested them outside.

Problem Solving

Today we were problem solving. We were playing the game ‘Showtime’.  We were trying to find 12 different ways we could make a total of 4 with our cubes.  We identified that we were going to have to ‘ act it out’ in order to solve the problem.

Can you think of 12 different ways to make a total of 4?

Sponsored Bounce!

Today we had our sponsored bounce today. It was so much fun. We are raising money for our OAP Christmas lunch.  Mrs Lumsden and Mrs Boyd raced on the obstacle course and Mrs Lumseden won by a mile because Mrs Boyd could not stop laughing.

Using IPads for Research

For the last couple of weeks P4 have been learning how to  research information on the iPads using Google Safe Search.  We are now starting to take short notes with this information.
