Chromatography

P6 have been learning about chromatography. They used filter paper to separate out the inks in different coloured pens. Once the filter paper they were using had dried with the different coloured inks filling it up, they then turned them into butterflies using a pipe cleaner.

Red cabbage Indicators

Primary 6 were continuing there look at chemistry by using red cabbage juice to test whether substances were acid or alkaline.

Children from Harlaw Academy came to Broomhill School to do some games with us. We played football dribbling, basketball shooting, hockey dribbling and bouncing a tennis ball on a plastic racket while walking round cones. They were training for doing other activities. My favourite game was the football dribbling because my favourite sport is football. The games were really fun and I enjoyed all of them and I think are whole class enjoyed it as well. They came for an hour to play the games. They are coming for the next four weeks to play different games with us. I cant wait in till they come back.

On Wednesday 3rd of February we did an experiment, looking at the reaction between some chemicals. The ingredients we used are Hydrogen peroxide ,yeast , warm water , fairy liquid ,canisters ,goggles and cups.

We are going to explain it step by step if you want to do it at home.

Step 1: Pour the hydrogen peroxide in to the canister.

Step 2: Squeeze the fairy liquid/soap (it will work with either) put it in the canister and then mix it together.

Step 3: put the warm water into the cup and pour in the yeast and mix it (for 30 seconds )until it is dissolved.

Step 4: We put the warm water with the yeast in it into the canister with the hydrogen peroxide and then watched the results.

What happens is that the yeast breaks down the hydrogen peroxide into oxygen which then is released and because of the fairy liquid is turned into bubbles.  As the reaction happens so quickly it releases heat. This is called an exothermic reaction.

Termly Overview

This term P6 will be running an Enterprise project.  The class have been split into two groups, with one group organising a football tournament and the other group making and selling soap and bath bombs.  This will involve taking part in interviews, learning about spread sheets, developing business plans, using the school blog and making bath bombs.  Alongside the enterprise project P6 will be doing work in science. The will be learning about chemical reactions and forces.

In Literacy this term P6 will be focusing on improving their punctuation. They will be working on improving their use of capital letters, full stops, commas, speech marks in their writing.  They also want to improve their writing by looking at more ambitious vocabulary and including metaphors and similes in their work. This term they will also be writing 500 word stories, blog entries, science reports and making posters.

In Numeracy, room 16 will be continuing their work on decimals. This involves learning about place value, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals. They will also be beginning to look at the links between decimals and fractions and extending their knowledge of the numbers line by looking at negative numbers.

We will continue to practice our mental agility through multiplication practice and the Big Maths Clic and Learn it sessions on a Friday.
