How do boats float?

This week we have been researching and conducting experiments to investigate how boats float!

We made tin foil boats and tested them by loading the boats with as many cubes possible before it sank. Well done to Amy, Mackenzie, Alice and Lynn as their boat managed to hold 202 cubes before sinking! We then discussed displacement, up-thrust and buoyancy.

Titanic II

We applied our knowledge of 3D shapes and their nets to complete a design challenge this week. We learned about the Titanic II which is due to set sail in 2018 in memory of the Titanic. Our challenge was, therefore, to create our own Titanic II models by identifying the 3D shapes needed and drawing and folding the nets.

We planned our Titanic II models first…

Then constructed them in our challenge groups. Have a look at the finished models.

Cubes and Cuboids Galore

In Maths we have been looking at different 3D shapes. We have been learning to draw cubes and cuboids on isometric paper and have correctly identified whether certain nets when folded would make a cube.

🍀Happy St Patrick’s Day🍀

We created some great line drawings whilst developing our listening skills. We watched and listened to an online tutorial that took us step by step through how to draw an Irish leprechaun. We then added colour to our drawings.

Birds On A Wire

We experimented with watering down different colours of paint to merge together and create some beautiful sunsets and sunrises. We used black pens to draw silhouettes onto the paper of different buildings and birds on a wire. Have a look at our wonderful creations!

All Aboard the Titanic!

Wow! Miss Lamberton cannot believe the high standard of homework completed by every pupil in the class this week. From the Marconi room to crew cabins, every model created over the past couple of weeks at home is absolutely outstanding. Here is a little sneak peak at some of the models. Well done to all in P5! 🙂

Iceberg Investigations

We have been working in groups of 4 to design an experiment to investigate factors that might influence the rate at which an iceberg melts. We have discussed the importance of making sure our experiments are fair. Watch this space to see what we find out!

Google Expeditions

What an experience! In 30mins we were transported to each of the Seven Wonders of the World, enjoyed a tour round the Titanic museum in Belfast and even dived with sharks! All by looking through cardboard goggles and an Android phone!

Diving Talent Scouts

img_3104 img_3108 img_3109 img_3112 img_3117Today we had some Diving Talent Scouts at Broomhill. Each class were timetabled for a session with them. We all took part in different activities to asses our strength, balance, coordination and flexibility.

Some of us might receive a letter to further develop our skills as future divers. Who knows, a future gold medalist might be amongst us!
