Staffing

As some of you will have been aware, Mrs Legdon was not in school last week. She has been asked to go temporarily to Braeside School where she is working with a class. When we have any further information about when she is due to return we will let you know.

School Uniform

As we let you know earlier this year, we are changing the school uniform. Details of how to purchase the new uniform will be issued after Easter to allow everyone plenty of time to get ready for the start of the new session. We would like everyone to have changed over to the new colour by December 2014.

Crossing Patrollers

The crossing patrollers are there to help keep the children safe as they cross some very busy roads. It has been reported that not all the children are using the crossings correctly on their way to and from school.  We would be grateful if you could help us to reinforce the road safety message. The children should listen to the instructions given by the Crossing Patrollers who will let them know when it is safe to cross the road.

Medication in School

We regularly get requests to give out medication to pupils during the school day. While we are happy to do this I would remind all parents/carers that before any medication can be given out by a member of staff a form must be filled out in school. If you have any queries about this please contact Mrs Hyland in the office.

Gardening Club

A huge thank you to everyone who helped out with the gardening club on Saturday. There was a lot of hard work going on clearing and replanting the wildlife garden beds. We are very grateful to those who donated some plants to supplement the ones that had been bought. The wildlife garden looks great!

Sportshall Athletics/ Basketball

Well done to both our Sportshall Athletics and Basketball teams who represented the school in competitions recently. Everyone in the teams gave their maximum effort and were great ambassadors for the school.

A few pointers from the School Crossing Patrol

A school parent has been speaking to the Crossing Patroller, Betty, at the Fonthill and Bon Accord crossing. She has been holding this post for a while now and is really enjoying it, especially that all the kids are so good and well behaved.

She asked if it would be possible to let parents know about few rules when crossing the street:

1/ When crossing, children should always cross in front of the Patroller, never behind them, as they cannot see what’s going on and cannot control the situation.

2/ Never run – the Patroller will stand in the middle of the crossing until everybody has safely crossed. Running can cause hazards such as tripping and falling in the middle of the road.

3/ Never wait at the edge of the road – sometimes cars travel too close to the curb and can catch a child.

4/ Children should only start crossing when the Patroller says it is safe to do so, not just run across when the green man appears.
The children are aware of these rules as teachers at school regularly remind them. However, parents need to be aware as well so that they can reinforce these rules when crossing with their kids or remind older children who are crossing without a parent.
Thank you!

New School Uniform

Background

In June of last year some observations were made by parents regarding the school uniform. In light of this the Parent Council raised this issue with the school and we decided to look at how we could take this forward. It was agreed that we should move away from having the two colours to a single colour. This will help to promote the identity of the school. Also, the pupils are already very proud of their school and we want to build on this. A smart uniform helps to promote that pride in the school.

We realised that trying to agree on a single colour would be tricky. With many different views already expressed, we decided to consult the pupils through the Pupil Council and take on board their views. They arrived at a consensus and we have taken their suggestion forward. The pupils have decided on Royal Blue.

New Uniform

So, following consultation with the Parent Council and Pupil Council over the past few months we are very pleased to introduce the new school uniform. Arrangements for phasing in the new uniform by this time next year are detailed below.

The new uniform will start from August 2014. There will be a phasing in process but we hope that as from Christmas 2014 all children will have adopted the new school colours.  Meanwhile, we still have green and grey sweatshirts in stock. For anyone who feels their child will need a new sweatshirt to see them through to the Summer holidays we are selling these at a reduced price from 3rd February.

As from August 2014 the uniform will be:

  • Royal Blue sweatshirt, v-neck jumper or cardigan (with school badge)
  • Grey/black school trousers, skirt or pinafore
  • White polo shirt
  • Black/ dark coloured shoes

Information on how to buy the new uniform will be issued to parents in due course.

Newsletter – December 2013

Dear Parents/ Carers

As this term comes to a close, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continued support throughout 2013. We hope that you all have a relaxing and happy festive break and look forward to seeing everyone again in the New Year.

Staffing News

Congratulations go to Miss Royle who was successful at interview and has been appointed as Acting Head Teacher at Greenbrae School. It is planned for her to take up this role in the New Year and she will be there for approximately 18 months. In her absence Mrs. MacPherson will continue in her role as Acting Depute Head Teacher.

Absence

If your child is to be absent we would appreciate if you could make contact with the school to let us know. The office is very busy in the mornings so a message left on the school answerphone is sufficient if you can’t get through.

In the New Year we will be starting to use a new system for making contact with parents/ carers regarding absence. In the first instance we would still ask you to let us know by phone if your child is absent. For any pupil we have not had contact about, a text message will be sent out. Parents/ carers will be able to respond to the text message giving the reason for the absence. This will happen for every day of the absence unless we have been told that it is known that your child is going to be off for a specified period.

Fundraising

A very big thank you to everyone who has given up their time to help raise funds for the school. The most recent events have been a great success. The school Christmas fair raised £4100, a fantastic amount!  Also, a cheque arrived in the school today for £300 from the Bag 2 School initiative. We will keep you informed about how the money has been spent to enhance the learning experiences in the school.

Nursery

The Nursery was visited by the Care Inspectorate recently as part of their inspection process. As a result of the visit the Nursery team received a very good report which is now available for everyone to view on the Care Inspectorate website. Well done to everyone for their hard work which is recognised in the report
