PARENT COUNCIL MINUTES AUG

Parent council Minutes 02/08/20

Staff in attendance: Frances Bretman-Head Teacher, Paul Malcolm-Principal Teacher

Parents in attendance: Alan Bray, Catriona Bray, Katie McKay, Jessica Coleman

  • Welcome
  • General introduction from headteacher highlighting areas of desired participation from parentsmoving forward such as Pupil Equity Fund allocation, parental engagement and channels of communication, input in school handbook/website, curriculum, policy, homework
  • Discussion about intention of PC moving forward, emphasis on it being a focal point for discussion, sharing opinion and a driving force for moving the school forward rather than a forum for complaint or individualised concerns about classes/pupils. It must be a shared space for discussion and parents to have their input in how the school is run
  • New school website in development in response to concerns previously voiced about accessibility and ease of use by both parents and staff, research has been undertaken of other school in and out with our authority, the product of which will be a new site up and running within the next month which will be clearer, more concise and easier to navigate on both desktop and mobile devices. This will also be linked to a school Twitter for updates, sharing of learning etc
  • Any advice, training required for parents on digital forms of communication such as ZOOM and GLOWcan/will be provided by P Malcolm
  • Expressions, now 100% of parents actively connected to expressions updates via email, still not a full commitment to download of APP by parents to allow updates via text
  • Education Scotland documents shared outlining policy and procedure from Scottish Government in regard to the organisation and running of a PC. Available for download from Education Scotland website (CONNECT)
  • Next meeting to be organised for 2/3 weeks. Before then parents to be consulted via Facebook by C Bray about what they would like to see on the agenda for this meeting. F Bretman will consult staff in school to construct a similar agenda, both to be combined and shared via expressions before next meeting
  • Other PCs parents/schools to be consulted to investigate good practice, ideas, shared successes to inform further development of KPS PC strategy. Seek out local members of Hermitage Academy PC who are residents in Kilcreggan/have pupils at KPS also
  • Discussion of online offering of home learning/after school clubs through the Young STEM Leaders programme currently being developed, will be active in the next few weeks.
  • Database of parental jobs, community links, businesses to be established to develop possible links, opportunities for school, source resources, training, input etc, with a particular focus on developing outside areas of the school. Also discussed in relation to this was the establishment of a parental sub-committee to continue to focus on fundraising.
  • Meeting time to be moved to 6pm
  • Minutes of future meetings to be published on website and shared via expressions with all parents
