Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch

IMG_0387In primary 2 and primary 2/1 there has been a buzz of excitement this week for the beginning of a brand new topic!  We were all so excited and happy to discover our new topic is The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch.  So far, this week we have spent time discussing what we know already and what we would like to find out and which activities would make this topic super interesting.  Primary 2b investigated the use of pulleys, primary 2/1 created lighthouses using technology and primary 2a  spent some time outside using chalk to create a lighthouse picture.IMG_0385IMG_0377

P6 find out: How do our brains work?

imageimage
Primary 6 have had great time learning about the brain in an interactive and engaging way! We made our brains using various materials to demonstrate the parts of the brain that are vital in controlling how our body moves and perceives the world around us! The brain is a very complex and powerful control centre, and our hats show that different parts of the brain are in charge of different things in our body! Ask a Primary 6 more about the brain and its important functions!

Nursery Technology Project

Our nursery children have embarked on the design process for their recycled photo frames. We began with drawing and discussing some ideas and possible designs. Children then voted for which size and style they would like to make and this week we have been taking ‘selfies’ with our I-pad which will then be the photo for our frame. Lots of children have also been working in the ‘woodwork’ area where we have the vice set up with a selection of materials. We have been using our measuring skills to get an accurate size for each side of the frame. When we use the saw we listen out for the noise of an old man snoring, slow and steady does the job. For our homework we are all collecting material to recycle to form our decoration. We are looking for materials made from: wood, metal and plastic.

Primary 7 Rocket Science!

P7 were visited yesterday by Martin Bailey an Engineer from Wyman –  Gordon in Livingston. After hearing all about his job and how he became an engineer the pupils had their own chance at designing and building rockets. Pupils were split into groups of three or four and set about creating their own rockets.  Each rocket was given an astronaut (an egg, eggstronaut!) which they had to land safely after their launch. After presenting their rockets and features and how they were going to keep their eggstronauts safe they tested their rockets, launching them in the field outside. You will be pleased to hear that all our eggstronauts made it back safely. Well done P7 engineers.

Food technology is Fun in Primary 4

In Primary 4 we have been developing our food technology skills over the last few weeks. First we developed skills in measuring and mixing to make shortbread for the Burns party. It was delicious! Then we learned how to prepare a cheese (with optional tomato!) sandwich. This helped us to practise our spreading, cutting and grating skills. Yummy! We have also been learning how to keep safe and hygienic when preparing food and also about healthy eating. What a lot of foodie fun!

People who help us

We have had some exciting visitors to our nursery. All of our visitors were ‘people who help us’. We had a nurse, doctor and some firefighters. They told us about the jobs they need to do every day and ways that they help people. We have also had visits from some of our mummies with new babies as our family are also important people who help us. We decided to split our role play area into a hairdressers and a car garage. Our outdoor house became a pizza restaurant, where we made our own pizzas and used the bikes for delivery.

P6 completed their WW1 ‘shoebox trenches’ with great success! The results were fantastic and the process even more fun! Our technology skills were most definitely explored as we solved problems, constructed and worked collaboratively to create our trenches. We are very proud of them! We will continue to learn more about WW1 throughout the rest of the year; so far, learning about trench life has been very interesting and engaging!
