Shape

2D Shape – Draw a house in the snow.  How many 2D shapes can you see?

3D Shape – See how many 3D shapes that you can build in the snow.

Symmetry

Resources: 2 colours of paper (one white), a pencil, scissors and some glue.

Cut the white paper to half the size of the coloured paper.

Draw half the outline of a snowman on the white paper and then cut it out.   Place the cut out snowman on the left of your coloured paper and line up the left over paper on the right.  Once you are happy with where it is on the paper, glue it down to make a symmetrical snowman!

You can try this with any shape – a tree, a house, even a face!

Measure

Measuring Snow!

Resources: a clear plastic container, a ruler and snow!

Fill the container with fresh snow and use the ruler to measure how much snow you have.

Bring the container inside and let the snow melt.

Now, measure how much water is in the container.  What do you notice?

Explanation:

Some snow is very dense, which means that it contains a large quantity of water for its relative size. Other snow has a very low density. Many things affect the density of snow including: temperature, air pressure, the nature of the storm, your geographic location and altitude. On average, for every 10 inches of snow equals one inch of water.

You can try this experiment several times over the winter to see if the different types of snow make a difference.

Capacity, how many egg cups of snow does it take to fill a:

  • Cup/Mug
  • An empty 2 litre juice bottle
  • A large cooking pot.

Mixed Snowmen:

P1-3 ~ make a large snowman, medium snowman and a small snowman.

          P4-7 ~ make a snowmen that measure 1 metre, 75cm and 50cm

Time

How long does it take write your name in the snow with a spoon?

How long does it take to build a snowman?

How many snowflakes fall passed your window in 10 seconds?

How long does it take to clear the path?

How long does it take to make 5 snowballs?

Take all the food items out of your kitchen cupboard and check their ‘use by’ or ‘best before’ date.  Place all the items in a line in their order of what is going to go out of date first.  Now show a grown up, what items they need to use before they forget that they are going out of date!

Area

Estimate (guess) how many footprints it would take to walk around the perimeter of your garden?  Now check and see how many it actually takes.

Add your answer to the blog and we can see how many steps we have taken as a school, touring the gardens of Whitburn!
