Some of the children in nursery have been retelling the story of the ‘Three Little Pigs’ and have made a display retelling this story. So that all the children are having the opportunity to contribute to this through their Learners Journal or by emailing the school here are some activities you could do at home relating to this story.

Why not make yourself a little pig biscuit.

INGREDIENTS

· 250g butter, softened

· 1 cup caster sugar

· 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

· 1 egg

· 3 cups flour

· 1/2 cup Cadbury Bournville Cocoa

· 1 teaspoon baking powder

· 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

· Pinch salt

· 4 cups soft icing sugar mixture

· A little water

· Pink food colouring

· 36 pink Marshmallows, for decorating

· 72 Cadbury Milk Baking Chips, for decorating

· 100g Cadbury Milk Chocolate Melts, melted, for decorating

METHOD

· Step 1

Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy and then stir in vanilla. Beat in the egg then stir in sifted flour, cocoa, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda. Turn onto a floured surface and gently knead together.

· Step 2

Working with half of the dough at a time, roll out on a floured surface until ½ cm thick. Cut shapes with an 8 cm round biscuit cutter and place on greased baking trays. Gather together remaining dough, gently reroll and cut more shapes.

· Step 3

Bake in a moderate oven 180°C for 10 minutes. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes before lifting off onto rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container until required.

If you do not want to make the biscuit from the start you could decorate biscuits you already have in the house such as digestives, richtea or ginger snaps.

Why not make your own pig face mask. You could use a paper plate as shown in the picture below or the inside of a cereal box. Draw out the shape of the pigs face and colour it using paint, pens, pencil, crayon or chalk (spray this with some hairspray to help it set and not come off the card). Carefully cut around the shape you have drawn ask an adult to help you if you only have sharp, adult sized scissors at home. You could make three masks and retell the story at home with your family. Who would be the Big Bad Woolf?

Rhyme is so important for understanding words and helping with early reading skills. In nursery we play simple rhyme games to broaden children’s awareness and understand of rhyming words. We describe rhyming words as “words that sound the same.”

Here is an idea of a simple rhyme activity you can do in the house. You can use anything…food, tins, crockery, mats etc.
