Yoga

With the weather being nice how about some garden yoga today.

Lets get busy in the kitchen

Who doesn’t love ice cream? Why not have a go at making your own ice cream at home. Follow this simple recipe and hopefully you can enjoy the fruits of your labour later today.

SERVES: 2

INGREDIENTS

1 large ziploc bag

1 medium ziploc bag

1 cup milk

1 tablespoon sugar

1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla

1⁄3 cup salt

ice

DIRECTIONS

Pour the milk, sugar and vanilla into the smaller sized bag.

Fill the larger sized bag 3/4 full of ice, and then add the salt to the ice.

Place the smaller bag inside the larger bag and close the seal. Make sure you close them both tightly!

Now shake the bag good and hard for 5 minutes.

Rinse the small bag off with cold water before opening to keep the salt water from getting into your ice cream.

Numeracy

Lets get creative

Wet Chalk Painting

Have your kids ever left their  chalk out in the rain? If they have you’ll probably be familiar with how soggy it gets, and if you’ve ever tried to draw with it while it’s wet you might have noticed it has a consistency like paint. It’s fun, easy, and gives the kids a different texture and medium to experiment with.

To do this activity put some  chalk pieces in water to soak for at least 10 minutes before you’re ready to start creating. This gives it a chance to soak up some of the water and go a little bit soft. You can choose whether to use it on paper or the pavement.

Baking

3-INGREDIENT BANANA OATMEAL BREAKFAST COOKIES

1.5 cups oatmeal (porridge oats)

2 medium bananas

1/3 cup mini chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Line a rimmed baking sheet with a silpat mat or coat with some cooking spray. Using the back of a fork, mash bananas in a medium bowl until they are broken down.

Add in oats and gently stir until all of the oats and bananas are mixed together and look like a thick cookie batter.

Now your ready to add the chocolate chips! Sprinkle them into the dough and stir until they are just mixed throughout.

Scoop one heaping tablespoon of the dough into your hands and free form into a cookie*. Place on cookie sheet and continue until you have 12 cookies.

Cook for 12-15 minutes or until set through and lightly golden. Cool and enjoy! *NOTE: these cookies will not spread in the oven so be sure to form them into a cookie before placing on baking sheet.

Makes 16 cookies

 

An activity for indoors or outdoors in nice weather

Den building

Use sheets, rope/string, pegs, to join and attach the sheets. Using furniture such as, couches, and dining table and chairs works to hold up the sheets. Encourage your child to use their imagination to turn it into anything they like! You could even have a picnic lunch or dinner inside!

Numeracy

Number recognition

You will need :

2 sheets of paper

Clear flat bottomed dish

Either salt, sand, lentils or rice

A small paint brush or pastry brush (if you don’t have these they could use their fingers or a spoon).

• On the both sheets of paper write the numerals 0-10 (or 0-20 if your child can recognise to 10).
• Place the dish on top on one of the sheets of paper covering the numbers, put the other sheet beside the bowl.
• Fill the bowl with either salt, sand, lentils or rice.
• Give your child the brush to move the sand etc around to find the numbers and match these to the sheet beside the bowl.

If your child is able to recognise and match the numbers with ease you could change the sheet under the bowl to have sets of number dots, similar to these

encourage your child to count the dots using 1-1 correspondence and match the quantity to the numbers on the sheet beside  the bowl. Again if they find this easy increase the number to within 20.

Science

Make a Rainbow

To make an M&M science rainbow, you will need the following materials:

• M&Ms
• Plate
• Water

I started by putting some M&Ms onto a plate.

My kids arranged the M&Ms in a large circle at the outside edge of the plate.

It’s a bit hard to see in the picture below, but the next step is to gently add enough water to the middle of the plate until the water is touching all of the M&Ms. Be careful not to add the water too roughly or it will cause some of the M&Ms to move out of the circle.

Then just watch. Over the next few minutes, a beautiful rainbow will form right before your eyes!

 

Sensory Play activities

Freeze some of your child’s favourite toys, figures or cars in a container with water overnight. Give them an object to hit the ice with and watch them have lots of fun getting their toys back!

 

Story

Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy

Hairy Maclary’s friends join him for a walk until, with a sudden yowl, a wail and a howl, they all run off. What could have caused such a scatter of paws?

 

Literacy

Letter sounds and letter blending.

Another activity that introduces the letters by name and sound. Blending the letters sounds together to make nonsense words, all part of early reading skills.

Story

Elmer the Patchwork Elephant

Elmer is different and he’s definitely not like any other elephants. Is being different a good thing or bad thing? Let find out!!!!

Lets Get Creative

Make your own Elmer

All you need:

• Empty plastic milk bottle containers
• scissors
• PVA glue
• paint brush
• brightly coloured tissue paper
• googly eyes

 

1. Cut around the bottom of the milk bottle handle and continue around the bottle to create Elmers legs and trunk and begin covering the surface with pva glue.

 

 

 

2. Stick tissue paper squares all over the “elephant” until he is completely covered. You could use sweet wrappers, newspaper, magazines, music manuscript anything you like, you can create your elephant.

 

 

3. Once you have covered your elephant give it a coat of PVA to keep the paper nice and smooth and make it a little waterproof. Then you can add goodly eyes and draw on ears and a tail.

 

 

Numeracy

Bunny Ride is a fun game where the children move the car as it drives along the road to collect the carrots for the bunny. Children will be developing their fine motor skills, counting and number sequencing as they play the game.

Balloons

Another fun way to get the children moving and having fun. Suitable for multiple children (and adults can get also get involved).

Blow up some balloons and then get them to burst them by stomping, squeezing, sitting or even body slamming them – no pins allowed! This is great fun – and will really tire them out. This activity is perfect for indoors or outdoors on the grass.

Being responsible

Getting the children to do a chore without realising they are helping

If you’re trying to get on with things in the kitchen, fill a bowl or bucket full of lukewarm soapy water and let your wee one have some fun with bubbles. They could use the water to clean their toys or you could give your little one some plastic cups and bottles to make waves, whirlpools and waterfalls. Your kitchen floor may get a wash as well! This is also a nice activity for outdoors if the weather is nice.

Measuring

Make a height chart

Make a height chart with your child. This can be done using left over wall paper or a piece of wood, as in the picture. Mark our the measurements in centimetres and meters along one edge of the paper. Once you have marked the measurements let the children decorated their chart, they could make it into a tree, a ladder or what ever they like. You can record the height of all family members on the height chart and over the next few weeks/months revisit this regularly to see who has grown and by how much. A great way of introducing the language of measurement as we see who is tallest or shortest. How much taller are your wee brother or sister? Or you are how much shorter than me? You could even bring this into nursery when we get back to show us how much you have grown since we last saw you.

Lets get busy in the kitchen

With the weather being warmer today it is important that we eat and drink foods that healthy and hydrated. Fruit is a great way to help do this as it has natural juices. Why not make a fruit skewers or smoothies. Here are some recipes for you to follow to make these at home with grown ups.

Make your own rainbow fruit skewers

Use what ever fruit you have in the house either fresh, tinned or frozen (thawed before using).

Encourage your child to cut and chop the fruit themselves developing their knife skills and hand to eye coordination. Use a hand over hand method to teach the children how to safely use the knife.

Thread the cut fruit onto a skewer. If you don’t have skewers at home you could make a fruit salad in a bowl instead.

This activity is healthy, develops fine motor skills such as hand to eye coordination, encourages risk assessment and develops awareness of keeping self safe using different kitchen equipment. You can also develop numeracy skills as you talk about size and shape. You can create patterns on the skewer using the fruit or count how many pieces of fruit each person gets in a bowl so everyone is the same.

Banana milk shake

250 ml milk

2 ripe bananas

Put the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. If you have a hand blender use a jug or bowl to blend the mixture. If you don’t have either use a fork to mush up the banana, this only takes a few minutes to get it smooth before adding it to the milk and mixing.

You can add other soft fruits as well strawberries, raspberries and blueberries all work well. These don’t have to be fresh they can be frozen, allowing them to thaw before using.

For a special treat you could add a scoop of vanilla ice cream into the blender.

Pour into glasses and enjoy!!!

Lets be Scientists Again

Lava Lamp Experiment

Supplies Needed:

• Vegetable Oil
• Water
• Food colouring
• Original Alka Seltzer tablets

To begin, colour about 1/2 cup of water with food colouring.

Take the Alka Seltzer tablets and break them into 2 or 3 pieces. Place them in a small cup or container.

Fill a glass about 3/4 full with vegetable oil. Then pour in the coloured water until the liquid in the cup is about 5cm from the top.

You don’t want it to overflow! Well, unless you want to turn it into an eruption experiment too. For this reason and quick clean up, I like to do this on a tray.

Let the children take turns adding a piece of an Alka Seltzer table to the cup. *DO NOT let them put the tablet in their mouth at any time.

Shape

 

This Shape Song is a groovy and interactive song for kids that introduces four 2D shapes: circle, triangle, square, and rectangle.

In your community

In your local area: When you are out on your daily walk why not have a look at different signs and environmental print in the community can your child help point out some circles or triangles or maybe they can find the letters from their name on street signs or shops etc.

Talk about the sides of the shapes are they straight or curved? Are there long sides and short sides? How many corners are there? How many edges does the shape have?

A Tiger Who Came To Tea is a lovely story about a Tiger coming to a little girls house for tea.

Has a tiger ever visited your house for tea? What do you think they could eat? Maybe he would like some cakes!!!

Lets get Baking (just in case)

Recipe idea: chocolate crispy cakes

If you’re looking for an easy place to start, why not try making this old favourite together!

To make about 12 crispies, you will need:

• about 100g of chocolate
• 50g of butter
• 2 tablespoons of golden syrup
• 100g of cornflakes or puffed rice cereal

Melt the chocolate in a large bowl in the microwave, then add the butter and syrup – then get your child to start stirring the mixture while you give them the cereal to add gradually.

Judge between you when you’ve added the right amount. You want to add just enough that every flake or bit of puffed rice is well covered in chocolate.

Help your little one to spoon the chocolate crispy mixture into paper cases.

If you’re feeling creative, your child could add small sweets or raisins to the top of each cake before they set.

Understanding the correspondence between the number of cakes and the number of toppings needed is  a really useful  skill for early maths.

Leave the cakes to set, then enjoy!

Creative Activities

Puppet show

Retelling and creating stories are key literacy skills for children. It helps them to understand, organise and sequence events and builds creativity! It is also a great way to capture their interest… especially those who maybe don’t enjoy sitting, looking at books as much. A great way to help develop these skills is by using puppets. Don’t have puppets? Don’t worry… you can use soft toys and figures or even make your own!

Choosing a familiar story or creating your own, why not put on a puppet show with your little ones? You could hide behind the couch or use a box as your puppet theatre! If you are able to take any photos or have any stories to share, we would love to hear about them on your child’s Learning Journey!

Making Leaf Pictures

I hope you managed to collect some leaves, small stones and twigs out on your walk with your family. If not maybe you could do it today or over the weekend. Here are some ideas of what you could do with them. Please remember you can share your creations with us on your Learning Journals. Developing Listening Skills

Have fun identifying sounds and playing listening games about the weather. Get your child to lay down on the floor or somewhere comfortable. Ask them to close their eyes and use their listening ears.
