P4/5 shadow puppet shows

This weeks blog was written by: Kyle and Aaron.

Maths

In maths we have been learning to measure length and divide. We know that our times tables can help us with division,  for example 15÷3 = 5 and 3 x 5 = 15.

The units of measurement we used when recording length were millimetres, centimetres and metres.  We did a lot of estimating and then measuring to check our accuracy using tape measures, 30cm rulers and metre sticks.

Weather Topic

We’ve been learning to design tornadoes by shading. Some by pencil and some by coloured pencil.

We also carried out research into different cloud formations and presented our findings as cloud shaped posters.

Spelling

We have been learning to diacritically mark. Diacritical marking is when we use special symbols to show many phonemes are in a word.

Science

Our topic is light and sound and we have been looking at how shadows are created. We found out that if an object is opaque it gives the darkest shadow. We made our own shadow puppets and performed a story to our classmates.

Pippin!

No, despite what our last assembly might lead you to believe, we are not doing a Broadway production of Pippin. This week, the class were lucky enough, to work with a farmer and name his newest pedigree calf. We had lots of brilliant suggestions including; Plumbell, Princess, Petal, Poppy, Percephone, Pyper, Piper and Phelicity. However, Farmer Scott decided to go with Pippin. Here is a picture of Pippin so you know who we’re talking about.

P6/7 Air Resistance

Today the class went outside for a Science experiment linked to the topic of Air Resistance.  We were testing to see what the effect of running with an umbrella open and shut would have on our speed over a set distance.  Our results showed that the air resistance slowed us down by approximately a second as we ran.  It was great fun.

Nursery news

We have been busy in nursery.

The children celebrated Robert Burns’ birthday in January by tasting some Scottish food and listening to the bagpipes played by Mrs Baird. They also created tartan pictures using wheeled toys.27th jan 045 27th jan 049 27th jan 051

The children have also been learning about polar animals and how ice is made. Some children found ice outside and others enjoyed investigating ice in the water tray.
