Health Week in Nursery

This week we have been learning how to keep ourselves fit and healthy. At group time we have been talking about healthy eating and other ways we can keep ourselves healthy at nursery and at home. We had lots of good ideas for healthy eating choices and we talked about some different ways we can travel to nursery to be active. Some of us have used bikes and scooters this week and lots of children have been walking.

The morning children were demonstrating their hand washing actions to make sure we always wash away dirt and germs properly.

We have enjoyed our healthy snacks this week. The fruit kebabs and fruity ice-cubes were a big hit on Tuesday!

On Wednesday we enjoyed taking part in our sports day. We were very active as we tried out the different activities and we still had energy left to run face in our group relay races. Well done everyone!

Nursery Fun – Magic Tricks and Animal Magic

We have had a ‘magic’ day in nursery today. Magic Mac came to visit us with his box of magic tricks. He was very entertaining and even Mrs Nicholls and Mrs Jennings were the magician’s assistants, helping him with his tricks. The children showed good listening skills and confidence dealing with new situations.

There was also a preschool visit to Five Sisters Zoo today as part of our transition events. We enjoyed seeing all the different animals and were amazed at how loud the gibbons’ singing was! We had the opportunity to get up close to some of the smaller animals in a handling session and some children even held a snake! The children used their listening skills very well to learn about different animals. There was also time for some energetic play in the park area. It was great to see growing friendships as the children move towards Primary 1.

Spring learning in Nursery

Over the last few weeks the children in Nursery have been busy learning about what happens during the season of spring. They have been learning the names of baby animals and flowers that we see in spring. The bulbs on display in Nursery helped us learn about the different parts of a plant. We have enjoyed being creative with different materials for spring themed art and craft activities. We used books and natural resources to inspire us.

     Learning about parts of plants

In the garden the children have planted potatoes and are now learning how to care for plants to help them grow. The pea and sunflower seeds that were planted inside have now been transferred outside to our little greenhouse. We have been watering them carefully and watching the shoots grow taller.

Some of the children carried out an experiment to investigate how water travels through a plant by putting some cut flowers in vases of coloured water. When we looked closely we could see that in some of the flowers the coloured water had moved up through the stems all the way to the petals!

The children have shown a lot of interest in minibeasts and we are starting to learn more about them. We now have caterpillars  in Nursery. The caterpillars are busy eating and are growing very fast. We can’t wait to see what happens next!
