In Primary 1, we have been looking at dioramas and learning how to make them ourselves. We have a project to make one at home and here are some of them already.
There were some really clever ideas, including a knitted dinosaur and a knitted caveman, a plastic egg with a dinosaur inside it, cotton wool clouds, a flying velociraptor and pipe cleaner trees!
Look out for them next week at parents’ night!
In Primary 1S we have been very busy making our own clay dinosaurs. Some of us brought dinosaurs in from home so that we could look at the different features, like horns and wings and tails.
We worked in small groups and had good discussions about how to use the clay.

Primary 1 recently submitted entries for the above competition – we talked about robots and learned about a robot from the National Museum of Scotland which can spell names!
We have had a lovely email from one of the organisers of the competition. We didn’t manage to produce a winner but clearly the boys and girls in Primary 1 have impressed the judges with their ideas so well done to all of you.
Here is the email from Dr Wicks:
Dear Pamela,
Thanks for all your wonderful entries to the Heriot-Watt Year of Robotics Mascot Competition. The quality of entries was amazing, and our judges had a really hard time deciding who was the winner. In fact, we have ended up with 1 winner, 2 age-group winners, and 18 runners up, from over 1100 entries!
One of our judge’s feedback was ‘First of all: what a tough choice! I mean that genuinely. When the criteria is not just based on functionality, but also originality and imagination and effort/enthusiasm ~ there were so many golden choices and candidates within each category. There’s so many I’d like to mention but it wouldn’t be practical to do so, so do make sure all these children know that they’ve produced some really excellent work!’
We have some other opportunities later on in the year for the children to learn more about robotics, and get involved in our activities. If you think this is something that will be of interest, please let me know and I will get back in touch once activities are confirmed.

Primary 1s were happy and excited to show off their talents this morning at their class assembly. The boys and girls have worked so hard to practise this.
Well done all of you. Mrs Sutherland is very, very proud of you all.
Thank you to all of our visitors who came along, and for your kind comments which will be shared with the children. They love an audience in Primary 1!

This morning we were very lucky to have some visitors to help us learn more about money. We talked about what we need to spend money on and what we want to spend money on, and what the difference is. The one thing we couldn’t agree on was whether we need or just want phones as you would need a phone in an emergency wouldn’t you?
We talked about how much it costs to buy things for a pet, and how often you would need to buy different things. Mrs Sutherland had told us that Poppy is going to the vet next week and it will be expensive, but we know some things for pets can be cheap, like treats and bones!
We discussed what we would like to save up for, and also learned a bit more about giving to charity. We have already done this with our donation to The Scottish Wildlife Trust for Salty the Seal, so were able to tell our visitors about that.
We asked lots of questions and had lots to say to our visitors. We think that they have probably gone back to their office for a wee rest after their visit!
