Author Archives: Mrs Sutherland

Books, Authors and Illustrators!

In the Rainbow Room yesterday we were able to watch Authors Live with Martin Brown, who is the illustrator of The Horrible Histories.

We have been learning lots about books recently, and we know that an author is a person who writes books, and an illustrator draws the pictures.

We had a discussion about what it means when things are DIFFERENT. Sometimes it is easier to remember that things can be THE SAME or NOT THE SAME.

We were practising following instructions to draw book characters. We had a go at drawing some lions. Are they all the same or not the same? Have a look at the detail that we were able to put in to our pictures!

Broxburn Library Here We Come!

The children from Mrs Sutherland’s groups had a lovely walk in the sun yesterday morning. We set off with Mrs Stevenson and Mrs Snowdon to meet Dianne at the library. We checked our books back in and Dianne helped us to find new ones by showing us where everything is stored. It was really useful as we know now where to find non fiction books, comic books and picture books. We got to take a new book back to school.

Mrs Sutherland also found some books for the older children who might find reading a wee bit tricky.

Here we are enjoying our reading!

Under the Sea, Under the Sea …

Look how busy Mrs Stevenson has been getting ready for her Word Boost groups. What do you think the new words are that the girls have been learning?

The children had a wonderful time – lots of learning going on here.

On a Journey with our Reading Passports

This morning, we looked at our new Reading Passports. These will help us think about why we choose books and also give our “opinion”. We know that an opinion is what we think of something. (We have given our opinion on school lunches and Mrs Stevenson’s clothes!)

Here we are with some of the books we chose last week on our trips to Waterstones in Livingston.

We are looking forward to reading more books in our group times.

Off to the Bookshop. Hot Chocolate This Way!

Thanks in huge amount to wonderful Waterstones in Livingston for having our groups there on Thursday. We were made so welcome. We had a tour of the bookshop so that the children were able to find the books that they would be interested in. We have a varied selection of books now for our area libraries and for The Cool Kids and The Fantastics.

The excellent behaviour of the children was commented on by customers in the cafe. Well done!

Thanks to Mrs Parience for organising this grand day out.

Here we are in our world of books.
