P6S – Challenge Poverty Week #ChallengePoverty #NowIsTheTime

This week, P6 have been participating in Challenge Poverty Week.

This relates to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the child, linked to:

Article 2
You have the right to protection against discrimination. This means that nobody can treat you badly because of your colour, sex or religion, if you speak another language, have a disability, or are rich or poor.

Article 26
You have the right to help from the government if you are poor or in need.

Article 27
You have the right to a good enough standard of living. This means you should have food, clothes and a place to live.

P6 have been focusing on:

*Learning to understand that some people in Scotland have less than others.

*Learning to understand what it is like to have less than others.

*Learning to understand the importance of treating others with kindness.

The class discussed the term poverty and shared what things we need in life to be happy. A lot of answers centred around family, friends, a home to live in and a bed to sleep on. They then listened to a variety of statements relating to poverty and had to decide whether they agreed, disagreed or didn’t know for each statement and be able to justify their answer. The class shared a lot of great responses and listened carefully to everyone.

We then watched the BBC documentary ‘Breadline Kids’ and afterwards discussed whether any of our choices to the poverty statements had changed.

P6 felt that the main message from their learning was “If you can be anything, be kind”.

P6S – Roman Numerals

P6 have continued their learning about Roman Numerals this week. They can now interpret and write in Roman Numerals, understanding the 7 basic letters used. The class created their own Roman Numeral clocks before working in small groups to create a Roman Numeral clock from natural materials in the playground. They had great fun locating sticks and using their problem solving skills to create each number correctly on the clock.

P6 Health and Well-being: Den Building

For part of our outdoor learning this week both P6 classes worked together. The children created groups of four and were then paired with another group of four. They had to select 1 group leader who would be in charge of collecting the resources. Each group was set the task of building a den using the resources provided. The den had to accommodate everyone in the group and they only had twenty minutes to complete the challenge. The classes worked collaboratively in their groups with some fantastic results. They were very proud of their achievements and enjoyed being outside with each other in the sunshine!

For our outdoor learning this week the class were set the task of building mini dens. The dens had to fit a little plastic figure and have a doorway for the figure to move in and out of the den. For this challenge we worked in pairs and used the resources available in our school orchard. The class also enjoyed being able to pick apples and plums from the orchard to take home.
