Term 1 – Week 1: Welcome to Uphall Nursery

A huge welcome to all of our new children, parents and carers and a huge ‘welcome back’ to our pre-school children.

We have been so lucky over the summer holidays to purchase some new furniture and resources for our nursery, we are so excited to share it with our children and their parents/carers.

We are now going to concentrate on the development of our outdoor learning environment…watch this space for updates!

During their first week at nursery the children have enjoyed getting to know the nursery staff and their own key workers.   They have made new friends and also enjoyed being reunited with old ones.   This week we have talked about how to take care of our nursery and have enjoyed tidying up when we hear our new ‘tidy up song’.

Here are some pictures of our children being very busy on their first week at nursery…

Fractions

Friday 20th May 2016

P4/5 have been learning about different fractions this week…here is what the children had to say…

Ashleigh “I can work out mixed number fractions by counting how many whole ones can be made and how many are left over.”

Eilidh “I have learned about equivalent fractions and how to convert a decimal into a fraction.”

Meghan “I have learned that a sixth means one whole one cut into 6 equal parts. Like in a pizza.”

Kalley “I know how to find a fraction of a number now and I can use a fraction wall to work out equivalent fractions.”

We have worked hard on other things too…..

Kiara ” I have enjoyed learning the different spellings for the oa sound (oe, ow, oa, 0-e).”

Finlay “I have worked hard learning my lines for the school show. We have had rehearsals this week for the first scene for ‘Shakespeare on Trial’ and we have also had fun learning some of the accompanying songs.”

P4/5 Junk Modelling

This week we have made a good start on our models (thank you for all of your recycling materials).   In our groups we had fun designing either a chocolate machine or chocolate factory.   We then had to select suitable resources and begin construction of our models.

We will keep you up-to-date with our progress.

P4/5 Book Week

This weeks blog has been written by: Eilidh & Finlay.

This week it has been world book week and we have had lots of fun!  We started the week with looking at all of the areas of the curriculum and planning our own learning.

We have listened to the full story this week which has helped us in our work.

We wanted to find out more information about the author Roald Dahl so we carried out our own research on the internet and we found out lots of interesting facts.

We worked in groups to design board games based on Roald Dahl’s book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ (Eilidh).

In art we have been learning to quill hearts for mother’s day.  The cards turned out amazing (Lily).   We also made cards by drawing around our own hands. The hand then held a bunch of flowers and we made the flowers 3d.  Also in art we designed sweetie inventing machines with lift-up flaps (Finlay).

In maths we designed chocolate bars with perimeters of 20 cm.  We also drew a lot of different nets for cubes then we built different 3d shapes using nets; these would be used to package Willy Wonka sweets.

On Thursday it was great as we dressed up as book characters (Holly).

Next week we are making model ‘Chocolate Factories’ so if you could please bring in some junk/recycling that would be fantastic.

P4/5 shadow puppet shows

This weeks blog was written by: Kyle and Aaron.

Maths

In maths we have been learning to measure length and divide. We know that our times tables can help us with division,  for example 15÷3 = 5 and 3 x 5 = 15.

The units of measurement we used when recording length were millimetres, centimetres and metres.  We did a lot of estimating and then measuring to check our accuracy using tape measures, 30cm rulers and metre sticks.

Weather Topic

We’ve been learning to design tornadoes by shading. Some by pencil and some by coloured pencil.

We also carried out research into different cloud formations and presented our findings as cloud shaped posters.

Spelling

We have been learning to diacritically mark. Diacritical marking is when we use special symbols to show many phonemes are in a word.

Science

Our topic is light and sound and we have been looking at how shadows are created. We found out that if an object is opaque it gives the darkest shadow. We made our own shadow puppets and performed a story to our classmates.
