Lots of fun events await us this term and we cant wait to share them all with you.

This week saw the launch of our word boost initiative with the children. The story we read this week was “The Selfish Crocodile”.

The boost words that you can work speak about and encourage with your children are;

creep

creature

Brave

Astonished

Welly Wednesday was great fun this week as the children were rolling down the hill through the leaves and collecting leaves to build a fire pit.

Thank you to our parents who stayed behind for our first Breakfast blether and Noon Natter on Thursday. This is a time for you to have a break and get to know other Parents and guardians in the nursery Staff room, free of staff. We  hope this provided a little bit of sanctuary in your day. The next one will be in November.

Nursery News

We are fast approaching the October break, but it hasn’t slowed the learning pace down!

This week we observed an abundance of fine motor development in Nursery. Children have opportunities to write using different media. Here we can see a child using a stick of chunky chalk to experiment with on a slate. Another child practices her cutting skills as she creates a beautiful border around her house she had drawn.

Mrs Beattie and Mrs Audsley introduced musical instruments on Tuesday. The children were developing listening skills and how to keep a beat to the music. All the children had a ball !!

It was our first Welly Wednesday of the session. The children loved running up and down the leaf covered hill and looked for signs of Autumn , we also had a look at the tree,s naming the parts of it with some help. They all listened to instructions and kept themselves safe on the walk there and back.

Nursery News

We are fast approaching the end of May !!! and what a week we’ve had!

Pond visits, Library visits and Parent consultations all go go go.

Monday was a holiday and we landed straight into Tuesday with a visit to the Lanthorn Library. The children sit and listen to a book then have the opportunity to choose a book of their own to have a look at. Children are then invited to share their learning and stand up in front of the group to talk about what they have read. On the way home from the pond we popped over to check on our baby Cygnets. They were in the water already!!

Our teaching student Miss Young joined us this morning for a two week placement, I’m sure she will love her St Ninian’s Nursery experience as much as we do.

On Wednesday we had another visit to the Swans, but this time we took them some sweet corn.  We had to be very quiet and very respectful as the Swans were very anxious with us beside the Cygnets.

Parent Consultations were very well attended and a great success. Thank you all so much for your continued support and kindness over the last session.

Thursday is P.E day with Mr McCurdy, today we were practicing throwing a bean bag and the correct stance needed to throw them a long way.

Friday gave us the chance to watch the mini glee club perform their latest songs. We all had great fun listening and watching the children sing so beautifully!!

Have a great weekend everyone lots of smiles and laughter from the Nursery Team xxx

Nursery News

What a pleasure it is to work in this Nursery and provide such a warm educational  environment for your children. This week has welcomed children to our setting and children back from holiday. ALL of them have settled back so comfortably and have been engaged in quality learning experiences.

MONDAY – saw three children join us in the nursery, the children were so welcoming and responsible as they helped these children to fit in with the Nursery routines.

TUESDAY – Education Scotland paid a visit to our school and Nursery today to ask staff, children and parents about our wonderful Head Teacher and the impact she has made to St Ninian’s Primary School. The children had an extra P.E session this week with the P.E students. They were amazing and provided a great athletics session up on the field.

WEDNESDAY – Welly Wednesday gave the children the opportunity to see the Swan on her nest. Lots of discussion followed about Cygnets and how many babies she will have. We will revisit her each week to see!! Some of the ducks were following us on the path, I think they though of bag of sticks was a bag of bread. This gave the children to see the birds up close and identify the colours and differences in the feather patterns.

THURSDAY – Following on from yesterday’s experiences with the ducks some children were engaged in hand painting Swans. We decided to look in our birds book to find out what the ducks were called. They are Mallard ducks. The female has the brown feathers and the male has green feathers on his head. P.E with Mr McCurdy involved the High Jump. Children were encouraged to run along the benches and jump over the elasticated rope. A great Athletic experience thank you Mr McCurdy.

FRIDAY – lots of outdoor play and investigation outside today as the children helped to look after our resources. The quality of play is amazing as the children risk assess and use open ended resources to build frames and constructions.

Have a lovely long weekend everyone!!! Love from the Staff Team x

NURSERY NEWS

WELCOME BACK \o/

We hope you all had a wonderful Easter break and are all ready for the last term!!

We started the week on Tuesday welcoming everyone back and finding out what we did over the holidays.

Welly Wednesday was much warmer than our last one in the snow. We were joined by primary 1 in the woods to look for Goldilocks and the 3 bears. The nursery children took responsibility to look after the P1 children by telling them the boundaries we have in the woods. We had to find the 3 bears that were hidden in the woods. The children had great fun running around using their senses to find the bears. Children made their way back to the nursery garden and had pom bear snack to finish the session.

Thursdays P.E lesson was outdoors up on the field. The children were given the opportunity to take part in Athletics, a relay race and laps of the track.

Friday came so quickly, we went to the Assembly and found out about being resilient and how important it is to be a good friend and “a back up” for others in the nursery and the school.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!!

NURSERY NEWS

The new furniture and resources have been well received by the children in the nursery. The atmosphere is very calm and the children are embracing the new learning experiences and life skills available to them. Children are now responsible for their own snack and wash their own dishes when they are finished snack. This promotes independence and confident individuals.

Transition this week gave each child making the move to school the experience of playing in the P1 classrooms. The children interacted with the P1 children and were all very comfortable in their new surroundings.

Welly Wednesday was fun this week, we were litter picking and taking care of our local environment. We also had the chance to look for signs of Spring in out local woods. We found Daffodils growing and a bumble bee!

Natural resources and independence of thinking is preparing our children to be responsible citizens of the future and successful learners at school.

This week in nursery we have met our buddies, gone on a bug hunt and looked for signs of Spring. Thursday was windy ! The weather is certainly colder! The children have been using our outdoor literacy to decide what the weather is like in the garden.

Amelie was so excited to meet her buddy on Monday and show her around the nursery.

Sophie celebrated her birthday on Monday, Mrs Mushet was happy!!

On Tuesday we visited the library and brought back a book about a scared spider.

This gave us an idea to look for bugs on our welly walk this week.

We found spiders, slugs and a centipede. There were signs of Spring in woods, we saw flowers beginning to grow and will check next week to see if they have flowered.

The afternoon children decided to make signs on the path “so we know which way to come back” They used chalk to draw signs on the path and then discovered that they could make patterns in the mud with their wellies too.

We celebrated Mahnoor’s birthday on Thursday in the nursery.

Nursery News

What a busy week for St Ninian’s nursery!

Our boys and girls are really embracing our new word boost words and trying hard to understand them. There have been lots of lovely thoughts and ideas of what words mean and how they sound, this is growing week by week! The word boost words for this week were;

CREAK

DISCOVER

GIGGLE

SHIVER

Please support your child’s learning at home by using these words regularly and encouraging them to be adventurous with their vocabulary 🙂

Moving on from the word boost work this week – the children showed interest in making words and letters out of wool. Some children even moved on to using the sounds they know to spell out the word ‘LUV’ – fantastic ways to experience and experiment with early phonics!

Our welly wednesday was a focus on finding signs of spring on the back of the very UN-Scottish weather we have experienced this week (which has been a welcomed delight!).  We found lots of green shoots and some pockets of colour that made us very happy! We also had a chat about picking flowers after seeing some had been picked and left lying.. we decided to rescue them and bring them back to nursery to put them in water! We seen a duck wandering through the trees which sparked lots of questions; what is it doing? Where is it going? More than all of this – we continue to learn to be responsible in our local environment on Welly Wednesday – taking opportunities to keep ourselves and others safe.

On Thursday we had a great time working with P5 in gym where we were learning to make baskets with our hands to catch a various assortment of items. We love working with P5 and learned a new term ‘underarm throw’, when we threw things back to our friends in P5.

Friday always comes around too quickly – but we went to the hall and had fun being dingle dangle scarecrows, using our bodies in different ways to flip, flop and wobble.

PEEP class this involved meeting our new puppet – an old lady (not Mrs Beattie…) who was telling us all about her eating habits! Swallowing spiders, flies… sounds yummy, no? We learned a Spring song and banged a big drum in time to share with everyone how special we are and our own name. We love PEEP – Bang, Bang, Bang!

Have a lovely weekend!
