Primary 2 are off to a magic start in their final term!

In numeracy we have been completing activities to show our understanding of counting in tens.

Wojciech-“I think counting in tens is just like counting 1, 2, 3, 4  but you add a zero onto the end of each number.”

This week we started to learn about division by sharing. We shared the cubes out into different boxes to get an equal amount in each box.

Marcus- “At our independent station we had division word problems on playdoh mats. On the mats with the cakes we had to make a total number of candles and then share them equally.”

In writing this week we wrote Wanted Posters for the Big Bad Wolf.
Vanessa- “Our learning intention was to check that our sentences made sense.”

Lilly-“I read over my sentences to check for capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.”

Leo- “We wrote about where the Wolf was last seen, how much the reward would be and what he looked and behaved like.”

This week we received another letter from the Dragon and he also left us some magic jelly beans.

Madison- “The giant asked us to grow a magic beanstalk for fairyland.”

This letter came at a perfect time because this week has been outdoor learning week at school. We went out to the Garden, to plant seeds.

We had soil, magic beans, sunflower seeds, water and a plant pot.

After planting our seed and magic bean we went back into class to complete a sequencing task of the steps to take to plant a seed.

We read the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ this week so that we understood who would need this beanstalk in Fairyland. We had to read the text and then answer different questions to show our understanding.

We love this fantastic Jack and the Beanstalk story/song.

Since we wrote Wanted Posters for the Big Bad Wolf we decided to go on a Wolf hunt.

Before we left to go on our wolf hunt we listened to the story of “We’re going on a Bear Hunt”. We changed the word ‘bear’ in the song to the word ‘wolf’ and we sang it the whole way to the woods and the whole way back.

Here is a link to the story read by the author Michael Rosen.

We had a discussion before we left about how we could stay safe when on our nature walk. We said that we had to be careful with what we touched, not go to close to animals, stay away from the Pond, look at where we were walking and stay with one of the adults.

When we went back to class we completed a 5 senses sheet and had to record our findings with a peer.

Angelina- “We all saw the ducks and swans at the pond and we spied a bird’s nest in the tree.”

Ryan “We heard the birds singing.”

Alice- “The trees felt rough.”

Julia- “I could smell the flowers.”

For spelling this week we went out to the garden to do a tricky word hunt. Everyone had to try to find the tricky words and then we had to read the words which we found.

Once we found the words we made a tricky word trail by writing the words with chalk onto the ground.

In PE we had races outside and we also completed the daily mile.

We have really enjoyed being outdoors lots this week.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend from Primary 2 and Miss Boyes.

Eggcellent Blog by Primary 2!

The children helped create the name of the blog.

This week for numeracy we have been completing fact families.
Julia- “There are 2 adding and 2 take-away sums in a fact family”.

Marcus- “You have 3 numbers and you have to use the numbers in different ways to make the 2 adding and the 2 take-away sums. The two addition sums always make the same number but the 2 take-away sums make a different number.”

Leo “For example if you have the numbers 3, 2, and 5 then you could do
3 + 2 = 5
2 + 3 = 5
5 – 3 = 2
5 – 2 = 3”

We have remembered that when you add the numbers get bigger and when you take –away you start with the biggest number.

We like using the subitizing game.
Wojciech “You have to look at the object and say how many there are without counting them.”

Here is a link so that we can show you how to do it at home. The more we practise the quicker we will become.

We have been working hard on our imaginative writing this week; our stories were all about meeting our favourite fairy tale character. We had to try hard to write independently and to include capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, connectives and adjectives. Filip was our star writer this week; he had super ideas and tried to include all aspects of the success criteria, well done Filip!
This week we have been learning all about different houses and homes. We have looked at the different types of houses that we might see in our local area and then we looked at the different types of houses in Fairy land. For art we worked in groups using Mod-Rock to build our own Fairy tale Houses. We aren’t quite finished them yet and will share a completed photo after the holidays but here we are in action.

In RE we have been leaning all about the Easter story, we sequenced pictures of the story and then we used puppets to role play a few different parts of the story.

At Ninian’s natter on Thursday we reflected and worked on our aims with Miss Boyes, completed a mind-map of what we have learned this term, self-assessed and up-leveled our work and had learning conversations.

Julia received the achievement award on today for super effort and improvement in Literacy. Well done Julia!

Miss Boyes loved seeing all of our different Fairy tale characters and homes that we completed for homework. If you have not brought your model in yet then we would love to see it after the holidays as we will be completing class talks to discuss why we chose our character and how we made it.

We hope you have a lovely Easter Break from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!

Puppets in P2!

This week to finish off our money topic we have been counting money and finding change from an amount.

We know that you have to complete a subtraction sum to find out how much change. We found it tricky when we were buying more than 1 item at the shop because then we had to do an adding sum to find the total amount and a take-away sum to find how much change.

We loved playing the Pop to the Shops board game because it allowed us to use all of the skills we have learned so far in our money topic.

In numeracy this week we have been learning how to count in 3’s and recapping counting in 5’s.

At our independent station we completed a count by 3 dot to dot and a count by 5 ordering activty. The activities were really fun and helped us to practise our counting skills.

We really enjoy singing the count by 3’s song.

Last week we went to Purves Puppets and we completed puppet investigations and designs.

Following on from this we have been making puppets in class this week using different materials and by looking back on our designs from last week.

We have been using socks, pens, spoons, lollipop sticks, paper templates, wool, scissors and glue. We will be using our puppets in class during our structured play.

Ahmad-” We made Goldilocks and the three bears puppets. We worked together to do it by sharing the materials.”

In writing this week we wrote an imaginative story about being a princess or a prince for the day. Our stories were amazing and Miss Boyes loved reading them because we had worked hard to meet our success criteria. Our stories were interesting because we used lots of amazing adjectives. Here are some examples from our star writers.

For art we used oil pastels to create portraits of ourselves as a prince or a princess. We included different patterns in our drawings.

On Tuesday we went on a trip to the library at the Lanthorn. We love our library trips because we learn lots about the different books.
This week we learned more about the difference between fiction and non-fiction books.
Marcus- ” A fiction book is a book that tells a story and is not true.”
Julia-” A non-fiction book is not  a story book.”
Abdullah-” A non-fiction books has facts which are true.”

We enjoyed returning our books and choosing a new book to read in class.

We love our fairyland structured play. We took part in lots of different activities for the curricular areas. Once we have finished our activity we evaluate it on our sheet by colouring one of the faces.

Here we are at our listening and talking station using our finger puppets.

We enjoyed the numeracy word problems with a fairytale theme. We worked in pairs to solve the problems.

Hope you all have  a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and primary 2!

Primary 2 go on an adventure to Purves Puppets.

What a great start to the week we had! We went on our school trip to Purves Puppets in Biggar.
Julia-“The show was called Pips and Panda meet the three bears.”

The show was amazing because the puppets glowed in the dark. We had to blow out special lights in the theatre for the room to go dark.
Maja- “When we blew the lights out the stars begun to glow above us on the ceiling.”

The two main characters were called Pips and Panda and we got to hear the story of Golidlocks and the 3 bears.

This linked perfectly with our new Fairyland topic.

Madison-“My favourite part was when Panda flew away with the kite because I liked Panda the Puppet.”

Wojciech- “I liked the part when Panda and Pips got stuck in the swing because they kept bumping in to each other.”

Ava- “My favourite part was when the Hawaiian frogs were dancing.”

Leo- “My favourite character was Pips because he is a cheeky monkey and I think I am a cheeky monkey too.”

Lilly- “I liked when the rabbit was eating Panda’s apple. I also liked when the Rabbit put tomato sauce on Pip, it was so funny.”

Poppy- “I liked it when Pips fell off of the swing.”

Elenta- “My favourite part was when Panda got stuck in the tree.”

After the show we all got to meet the puppets and we got a photo with them.  Here is our photo with the puppets.

Once we had our lunch the puppeteer came to talk to us about the history of puppets and he showed us special paintings on the wall.

The Puppeteer told us about shadow puppets, finger puppets, string puppets, glove puppets and rod puppets. Here are the photos showing the history of puppets. I’m sure we could tell you all about it at home.

To follow on from this back in class we investigated different types of puppets and how they are made. We drew a picture of our class puppet (Paolo) and we thought about the materials he is made from and all of his different parts. Then we designed our own puppets which we will make next week.

On Tuesday we completed a short read task for the story of Golidlocks and the Three Bears.

Ana-“We had to read the text and then fill in the missing words.”

For money this week we continued to learn about money equivalences. We had to find two different ways of making an amount with the coins.

We are finding this easier now and we are getting very good at identifying the best coins to use instead of using lots of 1 pences.

We’ve also been using Sumdog this week to practise developing our skills in numeracy and maths. We love using Sumdog because it’s a fun way to learn numbers.

We have been counting in 2’s 5’s and 10’s and we love singing along to the Counting Robot Song.

In writing this week we wrote a recount of our school trip and our challenge was to use different openers.

Miss Boyes was super impressed with all of the different openers that we included in our writing. Here are examples from our star writers.

In PE this week we have been learning how to play a new game.
Wojciech- “There are 2 teams in the game. One of the teams has to kick the ball out onto the court.”
Filip- “The other team has to catch the ball and then bounce it off the other teams legs or feet.”
Ava- “Your not allowed to run with the ball or you are out.”
Zoe-“The team the kicks the ball has to try to get back to their section of the hall without being hit.”

This game involved lots of teams work and you had to follow the rules carefully.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!

Learning through letters in Primary 2!

Our blog name was created by Marcus this week with a little support from Miss Boyes.

Julia- “In money this week we had to show Miss Boyes how you could use the coins in 2 different ways to find the total amount.”

Marcus- “If the amount was 57p you would have to show 2 ways to make 57 pence.”

Vanessa-“You could use 50p, 5p and 2p.”

Wojciech- “Or you could use 20p, 10p, 10p, 10p and 2p 2p, 2p, 1p”

Also this week we have been learning about odd and even numbers. Miss Boyes let us listen to the story of Odd Todd and Even Steven.

We also learned special rhymes to remember the odd and even numbers.

Aaron- “The rhyme for even numbers is “0, 2, 4, 6, 8 even numbers are great!”

Angelina-“The rhyme for odd numbers is “1, 3, 5, 7, 9 I love odd numbers all the time.”

Miss Boyes explained the difference between odd and even by showing us gloves. We had to lay out the gloves every time each set had a match it landed on an even number. If one did not have a match that would make an odd number.

We played fun games on the netbooks to help us with our learning.

http://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/number/oddandeven/

We had to sort the numbers into the correct category at our independent station.

Leo- “When I was at this station I kept repeating the rhymes in my head to help me find where each number had to go.”

Do you remember when we told you that we had sent a letter to Muck Primary school? This week we received their letters in return. We were super excited to read all of their letters. There are only 8 children in Muck Primary School so it didn’t take us too long to read the letter. They told us all about life on the island and it sounds great! They also asked more questions so we wrote them a letter.

Here we are with their letters.

Angelina- This week “we had a magical post box arrive outside our classroom.”

Leo-“The mouse left us a message to tell us to go outside and look in the post box.”

We all went out and opened it together. Inside there was a special letter from the Dragon.

The letter asked us to help the Dragon save Fairyland. He has been to our classroom and thinks it would make a fantastic Fairyland. To make sure we understood the letter Miss Boyes gave us different parts of it and we had to cut them out and stick the text in order.

We are really looking forward to our school trip on Monday and will keep you updated on our new Fairyland topic.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!

P2 Weekly news!

This week we were learning about saving money. We know that if you want to buy things you have to have money so it’s important that you save some of your money in the bank. At our independent station we had piggy banks and we had to find different ways of making the total amount. Once we had laid out an amount with the coins we took a photo with the iPads.

We played different games on the netbooks to help us with our learning.

The links are below so that we can play our games at home.

http://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=payusingonecoinv3

http://www.ictgames.com/payForIt/

In multiplication we have been learning how to find the missing number in the 2 times table sums.

Miss Boyes was impressed with our ability to find the missing number quickly using our counting by 2 skills.

Here are our strategies for the calcualtion   2 X _ =14

Wojciech- “You could do your doubles sums and I know that
7 + 7 = 14 so the answer is 14 because that is 2 sevens.”
Filip- “Count by 2’s with your fingers and then when you reach 14 count how many fingers it took you to get to the total number.”
Primary 2 have been using fantastic strategies and they are very good at explaining their strategy to their peers during number talks.

In literacy this week we had an interesting message from a mouse. There was a special voice message on the phone.

The mouse read out a description of a creature which it saw in the magical forest.  The message was also on paper so that we could read it in our trios.
Marcus-“We had to read the text and highlight all of the adjectives in the text.”
Lennon-“After we highlighted the adjectives we had to use them to draw a picture of the creature.”

Once we drew our pictures we guessed which creature we thought it was. Our pictures looked like a dragon.

We peer assessed our work by checking that our trios had included all of the adjectives.

We loved dressing up for World Book Day. In class we all chose a book to share with our peers. We shared why we enjoyed reading our books. Everyone spoke clearly and listened very well. We asked questions about the books.

In the afternoon we looked at different story book covers and we then designed our own book covers. To successfully design a book cover we had to make sure we included the characters on the cover, the title of the book and make it bright and colourful.

In writing this week we wrote a book review and we had to include connectives. At the beginning of the lesson we completed our Kung Fu punctuation because as part of our criteria we have to make sure we have our punctuation in the correct place. Our book reviews were fantastic and we all explained why we chose our favourite character and why we chose our favourite part in the story.

We have evaluated our Katie Morag topic this week and we will begin our new topic next week which is very exciting!

In Health and Wellbeing we have been discussing different emotions and the importance of respecting others emotions. In our groups at our tables we made our very own calming bottles. We used water, glitter and food colouring. We love having them on our tables.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!

P2 weekly news

In our maths jotters we have been writing the 2 times table. We have also continued to practise counting in twos but with higher numbers. At our independent station we completed a cut and stick activity or a dot to dot activity.

We have also been singing along with the counting by 5 song.

This week we have been learning all about germs. In class we thought about all of the different places that you would find germs and money was one of our answers. On Monday we completed an experiment using salt, vinegar, 1ps and 2p coins.

Ana-“This experiment took most of the copper from the coins and they changed colour.”
We love learning through completing experiments.
img_7068img_7071

We followed on from this by learning how germs spread.
We completed another experiment with glitter.
Lilly- “3 children put soap on their hands and then the first child put glitter on their hands. After this they shook hands with Elenta and she then shook hands with Zoe.”

img_7072img_7075

This allowed us to see how the glitter (germs) passed on from one hand to another hand.

This made us realise just how important it is to wash your hands. We watched this clip which told us when to wash your hands to stop germs from spreading.

Wojciech- “We made our own superhero that helps you wash your hands.” Our superhero had a super power which helped encourage people to wash their hands.

To further our understanding we completed a short read task.

Angelina- On Tuesday “we had to order picture cards for how to wash your hands.”

Ana- “First you put soap on your hands.”
Ryan- “Then you put the tap on.”
Julia-“Next you rub your hands together under the tap.”
Marcus-“
After you rub your hands under the tap you make sure that the soap is off and then you dry your hands.”
In writing this week we wrote instructions for how to wash your hands. Miss Boyes showed us step by step how to wash our hands at the sink. After this we had to write our own instructions, to be successful we had to use Capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and check that our writing made sense.

In PE this week we reflected on all of the games which we have learned so far. After our reflection we became creators and used the equipment to create our own game.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!

Little Blog by Primary 2

Ava creatively thought up the name of our blog this week, well done Ava! 🙂

We have continued to learn about our 2 times table. When completing 2 times table calculations we have noticed that if you add 2 to each answer you will find the next answer.

Ahmad- “The answers go up in twos.”

On Friday we completed our big maths beat that tests. We are trying really hard to get full marks in our learn its and CLIC test so that we can move up a level.

We are enjoying our smart starts; here we are completing our literacy smart start in the morning. Each table had a different activity to complete.

Lennon- My group had to build a sentence with the cards, we had to read the sentence to check that it made sense.”

Julia-“ At my group we worked in pairs or trios, one person asked the other to read one of the tricky words we then covered it and they had to try and spell the tricky word. We peer assessed each other.”

Ryan-“Our group completed tricky word word searches.”

Zoe- “My group played the tricky word popcorn game for smart start.”

img_6772img_6767img_6769img_6770

This week was Catholic Education week at school, we wrote Community of Faith recipes in writing. Our recipes included the ingredients, equipment and instructions. Also in our recipes we included the people who are part of a community of faith, the qualities of those people and important symbols in the Catholic Faith.

If you check out our twitter page you will be able to read some of the children reading their recipes. @StNiniansPS
img_6778

To go along with our recipes we drew pictorial representations of what we think is included in a Community of Faith.

img_6775

On Thursday Father Kenneth came to visit us for a whole school assembly.

Wojciech- “Father Kenneth told us all about his trip to Jerusalem and the journey of Jesus.”

We all prayed together and sang hymns.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend from primary 2 and Miss Boyes!

Have a lovely February Break!

This week in numeracy we have continued to learn about multiplication. We have been learning about communicative pairs and how to multiply by 1 and 0.

img_6627 img_6628

Also to develop our understanding of multiplication we have been looking at arrays and writing multiplication sentences to match the array.

At our station we have been independently matching the communicative pairs and matching arrays to the multiplication sentence.

We have really enjoyed playing this game to support our understanding of arrays.

http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/me3us/flash/lessonLauncher.html?lesson=lessons/08/m3_08_00_x.swf

Here we are using our plenary wheel to reflect on our learning.

Miss Boyes emailed a teacher who works in a Primary school on the Island of Muck. The teacher was happy for us to send a letter to her school and she promised she would send us a letter in reply.

We wrote some super letters telling the children in Muck Primary School all about where we live and our school. We also thought of interesting questions to ask, such as:

Lennon- “How many cars are there on the island?”

Ahmad- “What do you do for fun?”

Leo- “How many children are there at your school?”

Vanessa- “What are your names?”

Ava- “We have class mass this week, do you have a class mass?”

This week we have been talking about feelings and emotions. We learned about Health and Wellbeing through our Katie Morag topic. After listening to the story, “Katie Morag and the Tiresome Ted” we reflected on how Katie Morag feels at different parts of the story.

On Tuesday it was Internet Safety day we looked at lots of pictures and we had to decide if they were safe to be online or not safe. Together we spoke about keeping private information off of the internet, such as

Lilly- “Phone number.”

Angelina “password”.

Aaron “House door  number”.

img_6566 img_6569 img_6572

On Wednesday we went through to the main hall to listen to The St. Ninian’s song that the primary 5 to 7’s had been working on.

Leo- “The song included the name of the school so that you know it’s about St. Ninian’s.”

Wojciech- “The words in the song were about ‘learning together’ because that’s what we do at St. Ninian’s.”

Te song is super catchy and we love it.

We had been preparing for our class mass this week by singing our hymns and reading our prayers.

Our class mass was a lovely way to start our day and we were all listening very well to the Gospel and readings.

Have a lovely February break from P2 and Miss Boyes.

Primary 2 celebrating St. Ninian’s 40th Anniversary!

This week in numeracy we have been learning about communicative pairs.

Leo- “We know that 2×3 is the same as 3×2”

Aaron- “Another example would be 2×5 is the same as 5×2”

To help us learn about communicative pairs and to help us understand that the total would be the same we have been using cubes.

We have also been playing a game to refresh our memory of equal groups. The link to the game is included below
http://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=multiplication

We have been choosing the option to show the answer.

To help us with our instant recall of the two times table we have been playing this super fun beatbox game, you can choose your own instruments to be played along with the times table.

img_6451 img_6453

We also have been listening to the two times table songs for practise.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=850t1vjTZGg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUIB-dZRCiA

We have continued to learn how to lay out different amounts of money. We have been using the coins in class for help. We have also been using the ten frames to add different numbers together within 20.

An example would be layout 4 coins that could make 15p or layout 5 coins to make 20p.

In writing this week we have been using adjectives to describe stormy weather.

To begin the lesson we watched a clip from The little Mermaid were a storm hits the boat. This gave us lots of ideas for what a storm looks like, what it sounds like and how we might feel during a storm.

Here are a few examples of our descriptions,

Lilly “In the storm I felt sea sick.”

Josephine “The storm is windy and lightening is flashing.”

Kayden “The weather was dark and stormy.”

Also this week we have been practising forming out letters in handwriting. We firstly trace the letters and then we try to write them independently.

Primary 2 had a special visit from Mr Keggie this week. Mr Keggie is a postman and he came to tell us all about his job.

He told us lots of interesting information about the sorting offices, the post boxes, the uniform and the positives and negatives of the job. Mr Keggie loves being a postman and he was even able to tell us all about how the mail gets to the Isle of Coll because he has been to the Island. Mr Keggie also takes mail to the airport and he showed us a special pass to get in and out of the airport.

img_0670            img_0678

This week we have begun celebrating the 40th anniversary of the school. On Wednesday Archbishop Leo Cushley came to celebrate mass with us. This was a very special day for the school.

On Thursday we had a day of Fun. We completed superhero arts and crafts in the morning and had a fun party with cake and watched a superhero movie.

img_6478 img_6483

Have a lovely weekend from Primary 2 and Miss Boyes.
