P1B news update!

Hello everyone!

This week we have been consolidating all of the sound which we have learned so far.

We have been singing our Jolly phonics songs and completing activities which help us to develop our ability to say, read, write and recognise the colour of each sound and which mouth part makes it.

We have also been completing blending activities and decoding activities.

We have been decoding words and then making words with the phonics cubes, log slices, play dough or writing the words on a whiteboard to match a picture.

We have loved using our blending ladder again this week and our new car race track to blend to read cvc words.

On the blending car race track we have to move the car along the track and say each sound, we then bring it back to the start and read the word as we move along the track. Miss Boyes asks us if we can identify the beginning, middle and end sound of the word.

Joshua- “The car race track is lots of fun, I like learning to read.”

Well, writing was rather exciting this week because on Wednesday night our class had some visitors (DINOSAURS!!) and they were caught on our class iPad which recorded them learning in different areas of the classroom.

The Dinosaurs left us a dinosaur egg too in Harry’s Bucket!

We decided to use our imagination and write down how we thought they got into our classroom and what could be inside the egg.

We wrote lots of interesting ideas and Miss Boyes was impressed with how we sounded out our words.

We are learning all about capital letters, full stops and finger spaces too as these are very important!

Lucy- “The egg has now cracked, I think there is a dinosaur in the egg.”

Numeracy-

In numeracy we have been learning the language of more and less. This will also be continued next week.

We have started to look at amounts using objects and identifying which group has more or less by using our counting skills.

We have also been looking at numbers and working out how we can identify 1 more or 1 less.

We have enjoyed singing along to these songs.

We have gone shopping in the loose parts tray, each shopping bag has a number or dot pattern and we have to put the correct amount in each bag. Our peer will then ask us to add 1 more or make it 1 less then they will ask us, how many items do you have now?

This is a game which could be played when out shopping with an adult but having the adult’s permission to add and take items out of the basket/trolley of course!

We have continued to look at dot patterns and we have been picking up a dot pattern card and then writing the number of dots in the sand, this has also helped us to practise our number formation.

Emilie- “I liked using the sand to write my numbers.”

Outdoor learning-

As you might have seen on Miss Boyes’ twitter page we went on an outdoor learning walk.

On our walk we talked to Trex about road safety. We crossed busy roads by walking safely over the bridge! We told Trex to always stop, look and listen while holding an adults hand.

We have been showing Trex and Harry’s bucketful of dinosaurs our local area on our outdoor learning walk. This has sparked a great idea to draw him a map of our local area so that he knows where everything is.

Our GIRFEC theme this month is healthy. So we thought instead of finding out what the dinosaurs eat, why don’t we show them what we eat! We took Trex and the dinosaurs to our local shop and showed Trex which food is healthy and which food is not.

While at the shop to show Trex and the dinosaurs healthy and unhealthy food we also showed them how to use the digital technology to pay for healthy snacks. When we got back to class after our outdoor learning walk we ate our cheese and crackers! We loved them!

We also went out into our school garden this week and completed lots of Autumn themed activities. We have been learning about the wonder and awe in God’s world and this led us to talk about the wonderful season of Autumn and how things change.

We took photos with the iPads, made Bird’s nests and counted twigs and leaves.

Mrs Heather came in to do watch us do a number talks this week and she was blown away by our ability to talk about numbers. She also loved how we recorded our strategies. Miss Boyes is very proud of us for sharing our strategies and explaining them and showing them in detail!

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

Primary 1B news update!

Hello everyone, here is our news update!

Literacy

Adam “This week we have learning the k sound.”

Emileigh- Rose “The k sounds is short and bouncy.”

Emilie- “The k sound is yellow because we make the k sound at the back of our mouths and we have to use the yellow torch to see how we raise the back of our tongues to the back of the mouth.”

Shay “We also learned the ck sound.”

Lucy- “We have learned that c and k joined together makes 1 sound.”

We understand that the ck sound is at the end of a word.

Connor- Kick

Isla- pick

Shakti – “When we write the ck sound we join the letters together.”

Can you think of anymore?

We have been reading words and making words with these sounds. We have been discussing the beginning, middle and end sound in each word.

Use a torch to see how we make this sound at the back of our mouths.

It is important to remember not to say ‘ki’.

Listen to the songs at home…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0s1SOVyZbzQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1gyLJOpCzQ

We loved our trip to the library this week, we listened to a story and then we got to chose a book to take back to the classroom. We took one of our books to Milk and story with the nursery on Friday. We chose to take a book called ‘One Button Benny’ which Shay picked at the library, this book has actually been shortlisted for the Bookbug 2019 prize!

Here is a link to the story so you can listen to it at home.

We pretended we were robots and traveled in different robotic ways around the hall.

In writing this week we wrote fabulous emails back to Harry to tell him all about our favourite part of Primary 1. We have asked the Primary 7’s if they could maybe help us type up our emails to send to Harry.

In numeracy this week we have been learning how to order numbers to 10 and how to find the missing number In a sequence to 10. Over on our twitter page you might have seen some of the fun activities we completed to order our numbers and find the missing number.

You could also be challenged to look at a set of numbers within 10 or 20 for a challenge and discuss which number in the set is the smallest or the largest.

We have been playing this game with Miss Boyes to identify the smallest and largest number. If you want to play at home chose- numbers, ordering, to 10 or to 20 for a challenge.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/coconut-ordering

We are all so amazing at counting down from 10 and can do this with confidence now.

We love the big number song and for a challenge Miss Boyes will pause it at different numbers and ask us which number comes before and after.

In RE we discussed how our gifts and talents come from God. Miss Boyes loved hearing about all of our talents and what a talented bunch we are!

We loved our Buddy Mass, it was such a lovely morning and lovely to see P1B and their buddies celebrate mass together.

For European Day of Languages Miss Boyes asked Miss McCormack if we could team up with Primary 7 to research a European country. This went amazingly well and each group found out the capital city, flag, population and how to say ‘Hello’. We loved drawing the flags and saying Hello to our friends in different languages.

Wow another busy week indeed for P1B!

We hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

Miss Boyes and P1B

P1B news update

Literacy

This week we have learned 2 news sounds, the i sound and the n sound.

We now know that

Isla “the ‘i’ sound is a black sound.”

Shay- “It is black because it comes out through the tunnel of our mouth.”

Connor- “This sound lives at the back of our mouth in the vowel house”.

Sophie- “This sound is short and bouncy.”

We now know that

Lily “the ‘n’ sound is dark blue.”

Liam- “It is dark blue because it is a noisy sound”.

Emilie- “This sound is a long stretchy sound.”

Lucy- “We make this sound at the tip of our tongue.”

We could use the songs to practise our new sounds at home.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7GuPnhElJs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-SkJfIVSXg

Practise saying your sounds at home when looking into the mirror or use an iPad, camera or tablet to record a video of yourself saying the sounds and spelling the words (below) out loud. Listen back to your recordings!

We have been learning to read by blending the sounds that we know together. Here are some examples of 2 letter blends am, it, ip, ma, pa, ap, in.

Can you ask your child to spell these out at home? (You could do this with chalk, in flour, with playdough)

We have also been learning to blend 3 letters words- nap, tap, cap, mat, mit, sip, nip. Can you ask your child to spell these words at home?

Numeracy

This week we have been learning how to follow a simple number sequence by completing dot to dot activities.

Trex had left cupcake cases in our tuff tray, they had numbers on the base so we had to use our counting skills to count the loose parts to make Trex some dinosaur cakes.

In number talks we continued to talk about dot patterns, we have now learned lots of ways of looking at the total amount of dots and are building our computational fluency.

Spanish

We have been loving learning lots of Spanish Greetings. Paulo our class puppet was testing our Spanish by saying a greeting in English and then we had to say it back to him in Spanish.

Going round our circle we all had to say Hello everyone in Spanish (Hola a todos)   and then our friend had to say ‘Hola …’ and the persons name.

Can you practise some Spanish greetings at home?

Buenos días- Good Morning

Buenas tardes- Good Afternoon
Buenas noches- Good night

Hola- Hello

Adios- Goodbye

We have been building replicas of houses you might find in our local area or of our own homes to show Trex where we live. In fact some of us even built a house for Trex which he obviously loved because we are becoming expert builders and all of our constructions are highly creative. Like true builders and constructions workers we have had our safety equipment and have been using our spirit level to check that our blocks are level. Miss Boyes is sure if we had have tested our constructions against Storm Ali they would have with stood the wind.

To finish off our short week Miss Boyes asked the nursery if we could join them on Friday for milk and story.

It was lovely to share a story and sing nursery rhymes with them.

We are hoping to do this again next Friday and will be thinking of a nursery rhyme that we want to share with the nursery children.

Our buddy mass is on Tuesday the 25th of September at 9.30 am, you are more than welcome to join us at St. Philips at the Lanthorn.

We will also be going to the Library on Tuesday and having a little walk around our local area so please can the children dress according to the weather (jackets, wellington boots if necessary).

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend, from Miss Boyes and P1B!

Primary 1B news update!

Literacy

In writing this week we have been using our sounds to make words.

We used pictures as a stimulus for our writing; these pictures allowed us to use lots of the sounds that we know so far.

We had to choose one of the pictures about the cat to write about.

Some of us chose to write about a cat on a mat and some of us chose to write about a cat who had a cap.

We are really trying to have a go and have been talking about important things to remember when writing- capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

This week in phonics we have been learning the ‘a’ sound and the ‘t’ sound.

Connor- To say the ‘a’ sound you need to open your mouth wide.

Can you practise saying this sound at home or forming it with some loose parts?

Sophie- “This sound is black.”

Lucy- “It is black because you make a tunnel with your mouth.”

Isla- “The vowel house is at the end of the tunnel and the ‘a’ sound lives in the basement.”

Lily- “When you say the ‘t’ sound you can feel it at the tip of your tongue.”

Lewis- “The ‘t’ sound is blue.”

Syzmon- “It is a blue sound because your tongue has 2 blue veins”.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gg_KvU5oc9Q

Maths

This week was maths week and we have completed lots of activities.

We have been using our loose parts to measure objects in the classroom.

We have been using the language- largest, smallest, larger and smaller when building houses with our blocks. We worked as a team to build the houses. We measured our structures.

We used the language empty, full and half full when measuring water into bottles.

We had to colour the correct amount on the picture of the cups to show Miss Boyes our understanding.

We loved using this game because it let us use all of the words we have learned to use when measuring.

https://www.education.com/game/castle-measurement/

Numeracy

We have been counting total amounts and asking our friends to find 5 shells, 3 pebbles or 7 pegs in the loose parts tray.

We have also been using our loose parts to form our numbers.

Science

For Science this week we have been learning how to predict and investigate ways to make sounds louder and quieter. We have been finding out where sounds come from.

We closed our eyes and listened carefully to the sounds around us.

Miss Boyes asked us questions to encourage our thinking-

Were they loud or quiet sounds? Were they high or low sounds? How often did you hear the sound?

We played with the musical instruments and played an imitation game, in which Miss Boyes drummed a different rhythm each time, and then we had to copy it.

Can you listen for sounds at home, what do you hear?

We have discussed the GIRFEC theme safe. We spoke about how to stay safe at school and at home.

We played an interactive game with Miss Boyes (http://www.switchedonkids.org.uk/electrical-safety-in-your-home)

where we had to find all of the things that weren’t safe with the electricity in a house.

We spoke about how to keep safe around electrical items and wrote all of our thoughts in our talking book.

We also linked it to our 3 key words of our class charter, ready, respectful and safe and discussed why it’s so important.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend, looking forward to having you back on Wednesday!

Primary 1B news!

Primary 1B

Wow, we can’t believe it’s Friday already!

Literacy

This week in literacy we have learned 2 new sounds, the s sound and the p sound.

The s sound is light blue because it is a quiet sound which you feel at the tip of your tongue.

S is a stretchy sound, can you feel it sizzling?

The P sound is Pink because it is a quiet sound which we make with our lips.

Put one finger in front of your lips

Pretend that it is a candle.

Say p quietly .

Can you feel the air that could blow out the flame on the  candle?

We have been singing our songs to learn our sounds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJlPKm1Hbl8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybiJTZNLvTI

After painting our pictures of a dinosaur last week, we followed on from this by making our dinosaur with clay. We used the iPads to record stories with our dinosaurs. In our writing jotters we draw a picture of our dinosaur and then wrote about what it looked like. We used great describing words. We are trying to use the sounds that we know in our writing and have been reading our writing to Miss Boyes.

Numeracy

We have been learning about the numbers 8 and 9. We have been learning how to write the numbers using the rhymes.

8- Draw a ‘S’ and close the gate, now I’ve made the number 8.

9- Draw a circle and add a line, now I’ve made the number 9.

It’s important to remember not to lift our pencil for the number 9. Sometimes we are going the wrong way with our pencil and it is starting to look like a p.

In number talks this week we have been investigating different dot patterns. We have been explaining to Miss Boyes what we see and how we see it.

During a number talks we put our fist on tummies to show we are still thinking, we put 1 thumb up if we have a strategy.

You could practise talking about dot patterns at home. Miss Boyes will include some examples in our homework folder in case we want to practise.

Maths

We have been learning to how to measure objects and describe their weight using the words heavy or light and heaviest and lightest.

Can you use this language at home?

This week Harry from the story “Harry and the Dinosaurs” sent Miss Boyes an email. Miss Boyes told us what an email was and showed this to us on the laptop. Harry said that he has a special mission for us to look after his dinosaurs and teach them lots of new things. We made a map of what we want to teach the dinosaurs and what we want to learn from/about them.

Trex is Harry’s favourite Dinosaur, he wants to learn about how to be a great P1 (just like us) and all about our local area. If you have anything you would like to tell Trex leave a message and we will read it to him.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend, from Miss Boyes and P1B!

P1B

Wow, what a busy week it has been in Primary 1B!

Literacy

We have learned 2 new sounds this week.

First we will tell you about the m sound.

This sound is made by pressing your two lips together and holding them. This sound is red because we make it with our lips.

It is a long and stretchy sound…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The second sound we learned this week was c. The c sound is yellow because we use the back of our mouth to say this sound and we need a yellow torch light to see how the sound is made at the back of our mouths. When we shine the torch we can see that the back of the tongue lifts, ‘scraping’ the back of the mouth when we say the sound.  This is a short, quiet, bouncy sound.

We love singing our jolly phonics songs to help us remember how to say our sounds.

Follow the links below to the songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXq2_f6TV5E

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk_LzeQ-KXo

Numeracy and Maths

We have been learning about the numbers 5, 6 and 7.

Here are the rhymes which we use to remember how to form these numbers.

Number 6 is- Bend down low to pick up sticks, now I’ve made the number 6.

Number 7- Across the Sky and down from Heaven. Now I’ve made the number seven.

We have also been ordering the numbers to 5 and had to cut and stick the numbers into the correct order in our maths jotter.

We have been using this game to practise our ordering skills.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/caterpillar-ordering

We have been learning how to count backwards from 10 using this song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sqm-kFNaw8c

We would like to sing it to you at home.

In measure this week we have been learning the language of Largest, smallest, larger and smaller.

Miss Boyes showed us pictures of different sized dinosaurs, she asked us to circle the largest or the smallest.
Using the dinosaur toys we put them in order from the smallest dinosaur to the largest and largest to the smallest.

To show our understanding we cut three houses out and stuck them into our maths jotter in order from largest to smallest.

Can you find items at home and measure them?

This week we had special visitors, Harry’s Bucketful of Dinosaurs came to visit us and they brought Trex who is the leader of their pack.

We have decided that it would be a good idea to teach Trex and the dinosaurs all about St. Ninian’s and the local area.

So we took them on a tour of our school, to meet all of the teachers. We have also created a small world play area of our Local environment with our loose parts.

We wanted to create our own dinosaurs, so this week we painted a design for our dinosaur. We have dinosaurs with spots, stripes and spikes.

We have been practising changing for PE. We are learning how to undo our buttons and then button our shirts back up after PE. We have been finding this tricky but we will continue to practise so that we can be super quick when getting ready.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend, from Miss Boyes and P1B

Welcome from Primary 1B and Miss Boyes

Welcome,

The children have all had a super first week in Primary 1 and I am so proud of them all for how they have settled in.

PE days-

Our PE days this term are Tuesday and Thursday.
Children will need their PE kit- yellow top and back shorts/jogging bottoms/leggings.
The children can leave their PE kit in their gym bag on their peg.

Their black indoor gym shoes can be left in class on their chair.

Children in P1-3 are entitled to free school meals and these can be ordered using ipay impact online system. If you are not able to access this, your child will be asked in the morning to order their own lunch.

Children should bring a small snack for playtime and choose a school lunch or bring a packed lunch.

We have been learning our class routines- how to sit on the carpet, how to change our shoes, coats and prepare for lunch.

We have begun to learn how to hold a pencil, we have been practising different strategies-

  • nipping our pencil with thumb and index finger, flipping our pencil and gripping our pencil.
  • Crocodile fingers

We have been practising different patterns through our letter-join resource.

I’m sure the children would love to show you this at home and we will continue to practise this in class.

In class we have been talking about our rights for our class charter and Primary 1 have come up with their own rules (to be ready, respectful and safe) which they are putting into practise.

  • I will sit with my legs crossed and hands in my basket when on the carpet.
  • I will not shout out at my teacher and will wait my turn.

You could ask your child if they can remember the other responsibilities which they chose to match their rights.

We have been learning to right our numbers.

This week we have been learning how to write the numbers 2, 3 and 4.

Here are the rhymes which we use to remember how to form our numbers.

2- Half a heart says “I love you”. Add a line. Now I’ve made the number 2.

3- Around the tree, around the tree, now I’ve made the number three.”

4- Down and across and down once more, now I’ve made the number four.

We have been practising our counting using playdoh and counting teddies etc.

We loved this our smartboard games and songs this week.

Wow, what a fun and busy week it has been.

I wish all of Primary 1B a fantastic weekend!

P1B snow day activities

Complete these Snow themed activities if you wish.

Feel free to post photos on dojo!

Literacy

Go on a sight word hunt in the snow. Once you have found your word read it and then write it in the snow.

Build a snowman and act out your own snowman story.

  1. Where will the snowman go?
  2. What will he do when he gets there?

  • Read or listen to a Snow themed story on Oxford Owl.
    Complete the following activities:
    Find a word.
Draw a picture of your favourite character.
    Design a new front cover.

Numeracy and maths:

  • Make different shapes with the snow.
  • Make different sized snowmen e.g. A tall snowman and a short snowman. Use sticks to measure the different sizes. How many sticks tall are each snowman?
  • Subtraction snowballs: e.g. make 7 snowballs, throw 4 of them away. How many do you have left?

Health and Wellbeing:

  • Get wrapped up, think about what you need to wear to keep warm in the snow.
  • Play! Have fun in the snow, build an igloo, make snow angels, throw a snowball as far as you can! What muscles can you feel getting stronger?

P1B weekly blog

It’s been another busy week for Primary 1B.

In phonics we have been learning 2 new sounds the ‘s’ sound and the ‘p’ sound.

Hannah- The ‘s’ sound is blue because You feel s’ at the tip of your tongue.
The tip sound is blue because we have two blue veins under our tongue.

This is a stretchy sound which you will feel sizzling at the tip of your tongue.

This song really helped us this week with the ‘s’ sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybiJTZNLvTI
The next sound we learned was the ‘p’ sound.
Micah- “It is a lip sound”
and
Alasdair – “It is a quiet sound.”

Abigail- “The quiet, lip sounds are pink.

You can feel your lips quietly popping when you say the ‘p’ sound.

Why not practise this song at home to help you with the P sound.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJlPKm1Hbl8

On the smart board Miss Boyes showed us a picture of different objects we had to tell her if it started with a S or a P and then we had to tell Miss Boyes which part of our mouth made this sound. We checked if we were correct.

We sorted the objects that began with ‘s’ into the blue tray and the objects that began with ‘p’ into the pink tray.

Also in literacy we have been writing simple descriptions for our dinosaurs, we began by drawing a picture of a dinosaur and then we spoke about how our dinosaur looked with our friends.

Cooper- “My dinosaur has horns.”
Abu bakr- “My dinosaur has stripes.”
Annabelle- “My dinosaur is green with spots.”

For our short read we  have made a front cover for Harry and the dinosaurs. We were learning the title, author and illustrator.

We tried to use the sounds which we know so far in our writing and when we can hear a sound but we aren’t sure what it is we draw a squiggly line.

In numeracy this week we have been learning the numbers 7, 8 and 9.

Why not play this game at home. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/underwater-counting

We have been using the rhymes to help us remember our number formation.

Thea- 7- “Across the sky and down from heaven, now I’ve made the number seven.”

Yasmin 8 – “Around the gate, around the gate. Now I’ve made the number 8.”
Riley 9- “Make an oval and add a line. Now I have the number 9.”

We had a special grab bag this week. We got to put our hand in the bag and choose a number card. Once we had our number we had to find that number of cubes and lay them out.

Abu bakr- “In measure we were learning about the words “heaviest and lightest”.

Jiya- “We stood on the scales to find out how much we weighed.”

Cooper- “We had to look at the pictures and tick the heaviest.”

You could play this game at home-
http://www.lcfclubs.com/lcf-maths/flash04/z04-games/z04-heavier-and-lighter.asp

We loved making dinosaur masks, we had to use our cutting skills to cut out the dinosaur and then we coloured it in. Once we had coloured our dinosaur we got to choose different craft materials to glue onto our mask.
They are going to look amazing on the wall and I’m sure all of the teachers will get a fright when they walk by our dinosaur masks.

On Thursday we got to spend time doing structured play activities with our buddies. This was our chance to share our learning about our topic “Harry and the dinosaurs.” The buddies also taught us how to play snakes and ladders and they helped us write in our talking book.

Leon- “I enjoyed playing with my buddy.”

Amelia- “I liked playing dinosaur dress up with my buddy”.

Christopher- “I liked playing snakes and ladders with my buddies.”

Another fantastic week in P1B! Hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and P1B.
