NURSERY NEWS

Cant believe we are into June already but what a week we have had to kick June off!

MONDAY -Children who are moving to school after the holidays were given a playtime out in the school playground to experience having snack on the go with their Buddies. Today was our last word boost story ‘The Dance of the Dinosaurs’. This has been a great success in the nursery, the statistics and improvement in language has been phenomenal.

TUESDAY – Our second NYCOS lesson was very popular, the children who took part were swinging Buzz light year around to great chuckles and laughter. The children moving on to school had a chance to be in P1 for the day and meet their new teacher.

WEDNESDAY- Children had a second day at P1. The weather put off our Welly Wednesday today, but it didn’t take our smiles.
MRS PURDIE WON HEAD TEACHER OF THE YEAR TODAY !!! A great achievement, but she’ll always be Head Teacher of every year to us x

THURSDAY – P.E was indoors, the children were to balance balloons on different body parts. This took great concentration and ‘soft hands’.

Friday – The sunshine paid us a visit so we had snack outdoors and played until it was time to celebrate Lucy’s birthday.

Nursery News

What a pleasure it is to work in this Nursery and provide such a warm educational environment for your children. This week has welcomed children to our setting and children back from holiday. ALL of them have settled back so comfortably and have been engaged in quality learning experiences.

MONDAY – saw three children join us in the nursery, the children were so welcoming and responsible as they helped these children to fit in with the Nursery routines.

TUESDAY – Education Scotland paid a visit to our school and Nursery today to ask staff, children and parents about our wonderful Head Teacher and the impact she has made to St Ninian’s Primary School. The children had an extra P.E session this week with the P.E students. They were amazing and provided a great athletics session up on the field.

WEDNESDAY – Welly Wednesday gave the children the opportunity to see the Swan on her nest. Lots of discussion followed about Cygnets and how many babies she will have. We will revisit her each week to see!! Some of the ducks were following us on the path, I think they though of bag of sticks was a bag of bread. This gave the children to see the birds up close and identify the colours and differences in the feather patterns.

THURSDAY – Following on from yesterday’s experiences with the ducks some children were engaged in hand painting Swans. We decided to look in our birds book to find out what the ducks were called. They are Mallard ducks. The female has the brown feathers and the male has green feathers on his head. P.E with Mr McCurdy involved the High Jump. Children were encouraged to run along the benches and jump over the elasticated rope. A great Athletic experience thank you Mr McCurdy.

FRIDAY – lots of outdoor play and investigation outside today as the children helped to look after our resources. The quality of play is amazing as the children risk assess and use open ended resources to build frames and constructions.

NURSERY NEWS

WELCOME BACK \o/

We hope you all had a wonderful Easter break and are all ready for the last term!!

We started the week on Tuesday welcoming everyone back and finding out what we did over the holidays.

Welly Wednesday was much warmer than our last one in the snow. We were joined by primary 1 in the woods to look for Goldilocks and the 3 bears. The nursery children took responsibility to look after the P1 children by telling them the boundaries we have in the woods. We had to find the 3 bears that were hidden in the woods. The children had great fun running around using their senses to find the bears. Children made their way back to the nursery garden and had pom bear snack to finish the session.

Thursdays P.E lesson was outdoors up on the field. The children were given the opportunity to take part in Athletics, a relay race and laps of the track.

Friday came so quickly, we went to the Assembly and found out about being resilient and how important it is to be a good friend and “a back up” for others in the nursery and the school.

Nursery News

It was our SPORTS DAY this week!! And what a sports day we had! There was cheering, screaming, running, jumping, giggling and falling over… and that was just the staff – heehee!

Our boys and girls have spent the week rehearsing for sports day – changes to routines and patterns in the nursery can be difficult for little minds to understand so the staff team took time to explain to them what sports day would include and let them practice, practice makes perfect after all. We also made wonderful coloured banners to lead our teams in with – green, yellow, red and blue teams, with some children managing to wear their team colours! Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side on Thursday – but our contingency plan worked just beautifully…

We came roaring in to the cheers from the crowd as we did a lap of the hall for waves and smiles, before we got down to business and started racing. There were a few ‘cheat-abix’ moves on show – I’m talking to you Mrs Beattie 😉 but that all entered in the spirit of the day, where our boys and girls showed off their wonderful sporting talents in front of their parents, grandparents and friends. After all the hard work was over, the boys and girls received their medals as a huge well done for taking part in a fantastic day! Then we made our way back to the nursery where ice poles were awaiting us, to cool us down after all the physical exertion! A huge thanks to the crowd on the day for making it special for our children with their encouraging cheers, words and smiles – we couldn’t do it without you all!

In addition to Sports Day, this week we have taken on board a very exciting idea for our Welly Wednesday session next week… A few of our parents have made us aware of a ‘movement’ in West Lothian called ‘WEST LOTHIAN ROCKS’ – the idea behind it is that you find a rock, paint it and hide it somewhere outdoors, for others to find! You can then re-hide it for someone else to enjoy 🙂 once explained to our boys and girls they were super keen to take part! We went on the hunt for some rocks, and the PM group painted some for us to hide next week! If your child finds a rock they’d like to paint over the weekend, bring it to nursery on Monday to be painted in time to be hid on Welly Wednesday!

We also got a quick peek at the new baby signets on the pond – unfortunately one of the nine signets had to be taken away by one of the SSPCA officers due to having a poorly leg.

A little reminder, we capture the voices of our children in many different ways.. Now that we near the end of the session please take some time to look over our floor books, planning wall and learning journey wall – these are all tools that we use which are made to be shared with our children and their families 🙂 have a look and let us know which bits your children remember clearly…

Amazing P2/3

It has been another busy week in Primary 2/3 and the children would like to share some of their learning highlights.

Kuba – I liked the Daily Mile because I was running really fast.

Alishba – I liked doing fitness with the Body Coach.

Calvin – I liked art when I drew a chicken. It looked fantastic!

Matthew – I liked doing Sumdog because I finished my challenge and I got a new animal.

Andrew – I liked Big Writing because we thought about what would happen if we had no toilets after learning about Global Goal #6. My story was funny.

Pawel – I loved Ninian’s Natter because my mum was there and I showed her the pink and green in my learning. My mum loved my writing.

Levente – I liked working in groups to make posters showing where food comes from.

Kasia – My highlight was maths because we were adding and taking away within 100.

Chloe – I liked doing fitness with the Body Coach.

Annayah – I liked the Daily Mile because I got a dojo for running so fast.

Maeve – I liked writing a story because we were writing about the toilets closing and mine was really funny.

Zuzanna – I liked maths when we were doing bigger and smaller numbers. I hit a dip but I used a number square and I asked a friend for help and I got out of the dip.

Matthew and Maeve – we liked talking to the Rights Respecting Assessors and we heard at assembly today that we might have a chance of getting our Level 2 Accreditation!!

Rachel – I liked when we prayed together.

Harry – I liked doing the Daily Mile because I was fast!

Brooke – I liked getting ready for the Talent Show.

P2/3 Weekly Update

It has been another fantastic, busy week in Primary 2/3.

The children would like to share some of their highlights:

Angel and James – I liked looking at our Local Area. We thought about how land is used in our local area and made maps. We used Google Maps to help us.

Alishba and Aaron – I liked Big Writing because we wrote about how milk comes from cows. We made posters in groups too.

Andrew and Jakub – I liked PE because we played a game with the parachute. It was really fun! We played another game called Sharks and Lifeguards too. When you’re a shark you have to pull someone under the parachute and they become a shark. Then the lifeguard has to save you.

Harry and Matthew – I liked playing dodgeball in PE.

Zuzanna – I liked creating a character in literacy. I named my character Teresa.

Maeve – I liked making a character description. I called mine Yana.

Brooke – I liked the assembly when we found out the results of the elections for house captains.

Chloe – I liked the P1R assembly because it had Spanish songs.

Levente, Annayah and Pawel – I liked learning about Global Goal #6. We learnt about a school in Kenya where they didn’t have clean water and we listened to a song about clean water too.

Oma and Calvin – I liked doing Sumdog because I got more coins and a pet and I completed in the West Lothian contest.

Carly – I liked Spanish because we were learning high numbers up to 30!!

Nursery News

What a great health week we have had in nursery. We enjoyed all sorts of activities and had healthy snacks.

We started off the week with trips to the park and learning some football skills. On Tuesday morning our AM children had their visit to Almondell country park where they went on a Gruffalo walk, listened for sounds of nature, made pictures from natural resources and enjoyed the park. Both sessions loved expressing themselves in the dancing and yoga activities. On Thursday the children were encouraged to bring their scooter to nursery and had great fun ‘zooming’ up and down the playground . It was great to see so many parents and carers join us for the daily mile and also the Fun run. A big thank you to Mr McCurdy for arranging such a brilliant week and also to the parents and carers who helped us on our trip and activities. We couldn’t have managed these without your support. All the children had super fun as did the nursery staff.

Transition events continued this week with the preschoolers joining the Primary 1 pupils for the daily mile and a measuring activity.

PEEP classes with Mrs Beattie have started again with both groups learning sign language for the hello and goodbye song and being introduced to “The old woman who swallowed a fly.” Group 1 were also counting bubbles and trying to see how fast they could pop them. Group 2 were asked to draw round their hand and their parent/career’s hand and find words about their feelings.

Transition next week will be the Moving up mornings on Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th. Arrangements for both these days have been outlined in a letter given out on Thursday / Friday. If you have not received your letter please see a member of the nursery team.

There will also be menu options available on Monday for the preschoolers to choose what they would like to eat the following week at the lunchtime experience. Please note the choices depend on which particular day your child is going. These details were also included in the same letter. If you have any questions about any of these events please ask any member of the nursery team who will be happy to help you. We would also like to ask if anyone has the talking book at home as we are unable to locate it and some children have still to get the opportunity to take this home.

We would also like to invite parents and carers to a drop in session on Wednesday 7th at 11.15 am to discuss ways in which we as a nursery can improve to make your children’s learning experiences better. This will be held in the P7 classroom and you will get the opportunity to chat to staff and other parents over a cup of tea. Children who come along will be able to watch Trolls on the smartboard! We would love as many as possible to come along.

Just a little heads up on some dates. Nursery sports day will be held on Wednesday 14th June at 10.00 am and 2 pm weather permitting. Nursery graduations for preschoolers only will be on Thursday 29th June at 10.00 am and 3.15pm.

P2/3 Weekly News

What have we been learning in P2/3 this week? Here are some of the children’s highlights.

Carly, Annayah and Dominic – I liked planting seeds. I had to follow instructions and think about what plants need to grow.

Alishba – I liked making salad and it was yummy!

Harry and Calvin – I liked PE when we did the high jump. I jumped really high.

Rachel – I liked designing my own fidget spinner. It had to be symmetrical!

Matthew – I liked doing symmetry in maths when we designed symmetrical fidget spinners.

Michelle – I liked rounding numbers to the nearest ten in maths.

Chloe and Brooke – I liked making the salad because I got to learn different holds for cutting and it tasted good!

Kuba – I liked the Achievements Assembly. I was proud of James and Harry when they had to stand up because they brought in their new belts and certificates for Kicking Kids.

Zuzanna – I liked writing to Mrs Purdie because we could write about what we like at St Ninians.

Maya – I liked slicing the food when we made salad.

Pawel – I liked teaching my friends the Polish words for our salad ingredients.

Levente – I taught everyone how to say salad ingredients in Hungarian.

Hasan – I liked doing the CEM test.

Andrew – I liked eating the salad we made!

James – I liked the Achievements Assembly because I was an achiever!

Oma – I liked doing PE because we did the high jump and I could jump really high.

Angel – I liked rounding numbers to the nearest ten in maths. It was quite hard at first but I kept trying and it got easier.

Maeve – I liked doing number talks because they were quite tricky but they got easier when we shared our strategies.

We have also been thinking about Global Goal No. 3 and talking about what it means. Look out for our posters!

Nursery News

Its been a very short week in Nursery but we still packed in lots of learning experiences. Transition continued this week with both nursery sessions joining the Primary 1 classes to take part in either a numeracy or literacy carousel. The children got the opportunity to join in with a reading carousel listening to a story on the smartboard then moving onto working with a Primary 1 friend on a literacy app on the iPads . They also got a chance to make a Gruffalo story wheel which we will use to retell the story. In the numeracy carousel the children learned about time and made their own watches. All the nursery children showed a great attitude towards learning and were little superstars. Next week the children will be joining in with more carousels.

The children have continued to enjoy The Gruffalo topic and they got the chance to make their own Gruffalo masks. We will continue with this topic next week as the children have came up with lots of super ideas which are written in our talking books. Please feel free to have a little read when you are in nursery.

In P.E. with Mr McCurdy we have been concentrating on athletics. We enjoyed improving our running and jumping skills and next week we will be working on our throwing skills.

PEEP classes continue with group 1 learning about stopping, getting ready to think and go. They then got to take red, amber and green plates to take home to reinforce this learning. Group 2 have been working on their numeracy skills. They have had fun making their own skittles and using different sized balls to knock over huge tins and working with each other in order to listen and take turns. What fantastic fun they are having!

Liam ” I was playing with the bricks and the magnets and I made a rocket. It was easy!”

Just a little reminder that as the children are outside every day and hopefully the sun may shine can we please ask that suntan cream be applied before coming to nursery and that appropriate clothing is worn eg sun hat, long sleeve top. Thank you for your support with this.

For parents of preschool children a letter has been given out detailing parent meetings to provide you with important information before your child starts St Ninians. Please let any of the team know if you have not been given one of these letters.

Snack money is now due either £1 per week or £11 till the end of this term. This can be paid by iPad impact. If you are unsure of your payments please ask any of the team and this can be checked for you.

P1M Weekly News

Here are our highlights of this week in P1M:

We are loving our Play: Plan, Do, Review sessions – this week was our last sessions with a literacy focus. The focus for our play for the next two weeks will be numeracy. We shall update you next week with the different tasks. One of the play sessions this week, Miss Meechan joined in with the puppet theatre group. During this, Stefan and Kerr acted out the vowel house story using puppets.We then showed off our actions for sounds we know. Daniel showed us the ‘c’ and ‘o’ sound actions and Kerr showed us the ‘ee’ sound action. This week, Kerr also built a lego vowel house – great job!

Our sounds for the next week have been ‘f’ and ‘b’. Check out the ‘f’ and ‘b’ jolly phonics songs on youtube – we really like the ‘b’ song. We found that ‘b’ is quite a tricky sound as it very similar to the ‘p’ sound we already know but we all worked really hard and can now easily tell the difference – ‘p’ is a quiet sound and ‘b’ is a loud sound. Below are some pictures of us learning more about the ‘f’ sound. Jarred made the word ‘fan’ with the spelling stones; Rutendo is finding words beginning with ‘f’ on the smart board; Stefan is practising the correct formation for the letter ‘f’ and Romera and Poppy are playing ‘f’ sound bingo.

This week has been our first week using reading books in class. We have loved getting our books and reading them aloud in class. We now have a reading buddy in primary 6 and every Wednesday morning one of the P6 children will join us to read together. We will be reading our reading books, the books we have chosen from the library as well as practising our tricky words. Ask your children who their reading buddy is.

We have started our ‘fitness’ block of learning in PE. We are learning about developing our fitness levels and participating in a range of different activities to help with this. What was your favourite activity this week?

Our writing skills are getting better and better. This week we were shown a picture of a haunted house. We thought that it was an old empty house but we soon spotted that there was a light on in a window in the house. We wondered who might be living in this house? We have some fantastic ideas! Who did you think lives in the house? When we were writing our story Miss Meechan asked us to try to use finger spaces between all of our words. We were given finger spacer helpers to remind us to use spaces between words. Below is a picture of Partryk using a finger spacer; Jarred is showing us his picture of a haunted house he coloured in and he wrote on it ‘beware’ – fantastic! Kerr is also showing off his story writing. His story says: “2 vampires live in the haunted house.”

Did you hear about our special visitor this week? On Thursday Rudolph appeared just outside our classroom! He was holding an envelope and we guessed that it must be a letter for us inside. We thought that the letter might be from Santa – and it was!! The letter asked us to be honorary elves! WOW! Santa is going to need lots of help this year and he needs us to help him. Our first task was to think about ideas for our new topic ‘Santa’s Workshop’ – what can we do to help Santa? Have a look at our ideas?

Our last highlight of this week was our ‘health and wellbeing’ focus. We are constantly working on turn taking, sharing and playing fairly. On Thursday, Miss Meechan set up lots of games in the hall for us to participate in. All of the games involved us sharing and taking turns. We were all really good at this and Miss Meechan heard some beautiful manners from the children when they were playing!

What a busy week! I wonder what job Santa will ask us to do next week…
